Wait, so the Citadel Relay must have been linking the Reapers to some sort of Relay in dark space, right? What if the Reapers have some sort of base there? What if you'll have to activate the Citadel Relay to get to dark space and destroy that base?
If we gather a big fleet of some sort I'd feel it'd be better to attack something like this instead of the you know "Save the Whales/Earth!". I know Shepard is sort of Humanity's Hero, but I don't want him/her to be the equivalent of Captain Planet.... "With your fleets combined, I am Captain Planet!"
To me it's preferable to attack the Reaper's equivalent of a Death Star since
1) It's probably is how Reapers maintain their cohesion with one another. I mean something has to be keeping all the Reapers united if they are in fact a multitude of races. Destroying their hub won't destroy the Reapers, but they'll no longer be in unison with one another. At the very least it should hamper them in some way. And give us the fighting chance we need.
2) Fighting on a giant Reaper construct for the final mission is helluva lot more interesting then fighting on Earth. It also makes sense that Shepard and others may have to fight on foot to reach the station's core.
3) It's preferable that Mass Effect be part DA:O in space and also something of homage to KOTOR. (Mass Effect is heavily based on KOTOR not only from many abilities, but art design as well.) Also the Star Forge battle was pretty epic.
4) It'd also make for a more exciting space battle. Let's be honest no fleet in the galaxy really stands a chance against any large Reaper fleet. But their hub is probably relatively unguarded during an invasion. There'll probably be a few Reapers, but that's about all I'd expect us to be able to handle without getting owned.
5) Even if the hub is destroyed and the Reapers run away to hidden parts of the galaxy, they'll still be something of a looming threat that could always return. Without the Reapers there really is much left for Mass Effect besides interspecies politics and small scale wars.
