SecuROM is a DRM or Digital Rights Management program that comes bundled with some games. It's not the only type of DRM there are several. Some worse than others. The idea behind it is that it protects games from being pirated by authenticating the game on an online server. SecuROM picked up a lot of critisism from gamers stemming from rumours that the program installs a rootkit on the system which Sony DADC who created it deny.

The idea is that it authenticates the game for a set number of installs. I think originally it was three times i'm not sure if that changed. I know they changed it having to re-authenticate every 10 days where every 10 days you needed to be connected to the internet to re-authenticate the game.

EA has released a De-Authirisation tool for games that have issues with SecuROM though i've never personally found i need to use it. Unless you are planning to install the game three times in a row or on three PC's or more it's not really a problem. Also if you are really worried about SecuROM you can download the game from Steam which has SecuROM removed.
