I have done a few missions on Insanity, but would like to get a complete play through done on Insanity...but am aware of a few big problem spots I will have and am really hoping for some advice....My number 1 problem spots are swarming husks, the Pretorian on the Collectors Ship and closing one of the shutters on Garrus's RM....the shutter in the room full of cargo and trucks....I have a great deal of difficulty with these and really have been unable myself to work out how they may best be handled.

My Shep is an Infiltrator....His powers: Assassin
                                                                     Assassin's Cloak
                                                                     Enhanced Disruptor Ammo
                                                                     Squad Cryo Ammo
                                                                     Bonus Power: Enhanced Dominate

Weapons Load Out: Widow
                                      Locust
                                      Phalanax
Most used Heavy Weapons: Arc Gun and Avalanche

Armor: Kestral with Harrot's Sniper Visor

I am a conservative player, my strengths are ranged combat and flanking, but struggle with close range and especially melee....and I find those who I work with best as my squaddies are Garrus, Kasumi, Zaeed, Legion and Thane....those I find very difficult to work with are Jack and Grunt (I really prefer not to use those two)....as for the rest, can work with them, I just find just not quite as effectively as my top choices....I tend to be able to keep my top choices alive and active.

Any advice would be deeply appreciated.

If this is a NG+ you'll be struggling until you get a few upgrades. You'll want to check Mass effect Wiki for the upgrade guide and get the SMG & Sniper bonus asap.

If its a regular Insanity run I'd suggest that you spec out of Squad cryo and put some points into incinerate.

It softens up armor a great deal ; Armor heavy missions , like Garrus's recruitment or "Husk spots" are more manageable. For example , you can "1-2 punch" husks with the radius evolved version of incinerate and a squad mate's knock down/l lift power. Additionally it negates regenerates and provide a moderate form a Cc on non-armoured biological.

Remove some points in Dominate and add at least a point in AI hack , switch Enhanced disruptor to the Squad evolved.

2 things , Dominated and Hacked units are better used as distraction in my opinion; Open up by stripping the armor off a mook , and Dominate/Hack him ,the enemy's response should be to attack the closest target ,which should be your Dominated/Hacked unit if you did things properly. This gives you time to set up an other strip, rinse and repeat. Secondly Squad disruptor can provide a minor form of Cc by forcing hit targets to "reload" , giving you a couple precious seconds to act.

If you're going for a Cc build , I'd take the Viper instead of the Widow. I'm a big Widow fan but the DPS is way too high and it doesn't sync well with Cc. Once you get accustom to the Viper , you can deal just enough damage to Cc a target and move to another with less concerns for ammo conservation.

Mordin's is a great squad mate to have when playing an infiltrator ; Adds cryo & an extra incinerate to your rotation. A must , in my opinion , on horizon & the derelict . I would mention Grunt as a must as well , but since you don't find him to your likings, Garrus seems like the next best thing. With choices of 2 Ammo powers you deal with the vast majority of defences , Cryo/ Concussive /Dominate for Cc; Sounds solid to me.

A side note: I never struggle on the missions you mentioned , on the other hand The Shadow broker DLC was a pain. No words can describe how much i hate that place. So a word of advice , go for a more "assaulty" set up when hitting LotSB , the standard "scope & kill" didn't work well for me anyways.

Husks: I see you already have Squad Cryo. The main thing to remember here is just to keep moving. Backtrack if needed, or Cloak and run away. They have a surprisingly hard time hitting you if you keep moving and don't let them corner you.. The Phalanx is also pretty useless against them (too slow). Predator and any SMG should do.

Praetorian: Run in circles, basically. On the Collector ship you have the two ramps. Keep dragging it around them and you will always have cover. There are other enemies too. Try to take them out before the praetorian gets close.

Shutters: Not sure what can help. But do not rush to close the shutter, there's plenty of time. But this is a part of the game where it helps to be a fan of CQC.

You could also consider using a different bonus power. Stasis and Barrier are good panic buttons, for example.

PS: Strongly disagree about dropping Squad Cryo for husks. They have very little armor and it's easy to blast away very quickly without Incinerate.

from one conservative player to another here my advice:
(I assume you choose Widow)

1. go with tempest smg. Its full auto/ hi cap clip amke your best bet against flankers like verren and husks. Put cryo on it and it should slow faster movers.

2. Try switching to heavy warp ammo instead of Dominate. this allows you do more damage to barrers and armor and you can use your cooldown for more cloaks.

3. Arc gun good but think about flamemaster again it can help with flankers.

4. Don't overlook Miranda as squademate. She can attack all defences and if you set her to cerebus leader she increase your damage.

against the pretorian spread your squad out and when it gets close cloak and wait till he drifts a way attack repeat till dead.

Yep, I know exactly where the upgrades are and am going for them first :-)

What is a Cc? I'm sorry, I having trouble following some of your advice, because I can't work out what the Cc is.

Remove some points in Dominate and add at least a point in AI hack , switch Enhanced disruptor to the Squad evolved.

Exactly how I use Dominate :-)...One of two ways actually...either Dominate a mook in a mook cluster and once they have scrambled, Dominate in the next cluster, gets their attention off me aka, as you suggest...The other way, is going for the four way flank, feels almost evil doing that :-), but the show and the scrambling is awesome and mooks leave themselves wide open.

If you're going for a Cc build , I'd take the Viper instead of the Widow. I'm a big Widow fan but the DPS is way too high and it doesn't sync well with Cc. Speaking of Incinerating, how does Zaeed's Inferno Grenades go with the Insanity Husks? I have always used him in my other games when dealing with Husks...using him as my 'Get out of Jail Free' card...when I'm being swarmed, having him use the grenades on the Husks directly around me, thats unshielded Husks though.

A side note: I never struggle on the missions you mentioned , on the other hand The Shadow broker DLC was a pain. No words can describe how much i hate that place. Yep, thats been on my mind, I have never attempted Insanity in LotSB...I'm assuming your referring to the flying guns?...I have been twisting that one around in my mind...considering which sqaddie is best against them, how best to load out and how best to approach the combat, etc...and Tela Vasir herself.  :crying:

Thank you for your response your response and advice Saaziel...is much appreciated.

My usual game play has always been, starting by standing behind the low pillar right in front of the main door you first enter from...The Scions can't hit you with their acid there...and station my squaddies to a spread out either side of me to deal with the Husks...it's gonna be hard giving up that lovely little sniper spot :(...and then out with the Locust....but I'm guessing on Insanity that won't cut it, so straight out with the Locust and run and keep moving as you say.

Of coarse :)...I want to take that gun into every game I play :)
1. go with tempest smg. Its full auto/ hi cap clip amke your best bet against flankers like verren and husks. Put cryo on it and it should slow faster movers.
Hmmm...never did like the Tempests loose spray...thats because I fight at range the majority of the time though, Locust is good for ranged...but your saying the Tempest is the better at close quarters?
2. Try switching to heavy warp ammo instead of Dominate. this allows you do more damage to barrers and armor and you can use your cooldown for more cloaks.
Tried the Heavy Warp Ammo when I tried and failed Insanity before (refusing to fail this time <_<)...maybe I was using it wrong, but found it didn't help me that much.
3. Arc gun good but think about flamemaster again it can help with flankers.
True...and now I'm thinking about it, would be perfect for IFF mission? As for ArchAngel though...I use the Arc gun to stop the final incoming mooks when I finally make it to that shutter button I have so much trouble getting to and can do some serious damage with it from behind the sofa straight after the last shutters closed when stopping the Krogan and Vorcha...I'm crossing my fingers that it works as well on Insanity, as I can usually stop the Krogan getting up the stairs at all with the Arc Gun.
4. Don't overlook Miranda as squademate. She can attack all defences and if you set her to cerebus leader she increase your damage.
I know she is quite good...but just can't seem to stop her from racing ahead and dying constantly, thats what puts me off using her, am probably not ranging her properly...would that be the issue with her ignoring my commands and running ahead all the time?
against the pretorian spread your squad out and when it gets close cloak and wait till he drifts a way attack repeat till dead.
The Pretorian is my greatest fear, he was my undoing last time...thank you for the advice and wish me luck...:(

Thank you for your response and advice 1shot-1kill...very much appreciated.
I started out trying to find the perfect spot in that fight, but these days I'm finding it easier to be very mobile. The problem with having one spot is how the husks can surround you so you can't escape. There isn't much you can do then.

I just start out behind the first couple boxes and focus on killing the husks first. Keep some boxes between you and the scions and you still have room to run from the husks.

Since you have Cloak, I recommend using it to constantly keep good distance between you and the enemies. Can be helpful to have the longer duration Cloak for that.

Stasis can also help you in this fight by the way. Use it on the scions and shoot them when they fall down. It's a pretty cheesy tactic, but it sure works. They take insane damage JUST when coming out of stasis due to a bug, and on the ground they take high damage because they are considered "ragdolled" (this last part is not a bug).

Wish me luck......I really hate that dude...:(...I did in fact try an Insanity game once before, struggled through to that monster and lost it there, after dying countless times, I gave up.

I'm just questioning the merit of maxing out that power.

If you take 3 ranks , you have an extra 4 points to get the 1 point in Cryo /AI hack/ stasis for example. Not that it really matters in the end; I suppose that you'd rather pay the extra points to use Dominate less often in a fight, it never bothered me that much ( Since by the time it wears off , the fight is nearing the end anyway).

In my opinion Zaeed's Inferno is more "fun than functional ". I can't say how well it fairs against Husks since I've never used him in those circumstances , I prefer Mordin. One has less health but more choice & more devastating powers , the other Has more health & better weapons at the cost of power lethality . I guess it boils down to what you consider a conservative choice in that matter.

I'm not convinced that Zaeed is a good squad mate for Infiltrators.

I just really don't like the map layouts and enemy pacing . lots of odd angles , bizarre doodads for cover (that isn't really cover), The last incoming SB merc hover van crash bug is also particularly irritating. As for Vasir , a mix of well timed Stasis and warps usually works for me. Just don't let her jumping all over the place confuse you ;)

Only Zaeed can make Inferno Grenade functional, and even then it just is not functional. I tested Inferno Grenade with a level 17 Soldier, and even with +23% power damage from the Commando passive + armor, and I swear that it failed to completely strip a Loki mech's armor.

Heavy Inferno Grenade and Heavy Concussive Shot are comparable in damage (100 damage), but Concussive Shot gains 3.5x damage versus barriers, which is enough to take out a standard trooper's barrier in one shot. Inferno Grenage gains only 2x damage versus armor. If it gained a Concussive Shot-like bonus versus armor (3.5 instead of 2) it may have become viable.

I agree with Saaziel. Unless you want/need his Squad Disruptor Ammo until you max your own, Zaeed is not that great of a squadmate for Infiltrators.

Stasis huh....I don't care if its cheesy, so long as it works ^_^...I like the sound of that bug....Good thing about the advanced training, it becomes available early and I know I can get through the rest of Horizon without my heavy dependancy on Dominate...As for the cloak...gnrgnrgnr...I watched a lot of video's on Infiltrators in action 2 days back and read up a lot on the power bonuses, I always used the extended cloak, but swapped it out to the Assassin's Cloak just before I transferred him to this new game due to a couple of suggestions I read on the ranged combatant....:(...I don't have the re-stat powers option in this game yet.

I think I have found it so valuable, because I have a slow reaction time...not the gaming machine, but me...has been the bane of my existance in both work and play....I watched a heap of Infiltrator videos the other day and know I can't play as those people do, I reckon their Infiltrators have wings , they were impressive... I would guess that your are one of those gamers since the fights nearly over for you when Dominance finally kicks in...I'm jealous :crying:...:)... I would like to play like that, but it's not going to happen.

I listened and have tried Mordin out now...I took him on Zaeed's LM and Grunt's RM...must say, I do like his powers, though he spent a lot of time dead and I ran out of medi-gel on Grunt's RM...so its a bit of a toss up for me there...I'm doing a lot of squad testing in this game, trying out those suggested and testing power useability on Insane.....Mordins RM: Miranda and Zaeed...Zaeeds LM: Mordin...Get Cerberus intel: Mordin and Miranda....Grunts RM: Mordin and Kasumi....Jacks RM: Kasumi and Miranda. Kasumi remains a definate for me, her flash bangs have remained decent crowd control for me (slows them down momentarily) and her Shadow Strike still very useful....I have been convinced with Miranda, am working on her positioning now....I can see the appeal of Mordin, his powers are very effective, just having a lot of trouble finding optimal positioning for him, if I can nail that, yep he would be great. I now have Miranda and Zaeed ready for Archangels RM, to test Zaeeds Grenades out...I thought about taking Mordin again, but with that 3rd shutter, I really need someone I can keep alive.

Yep, I have spent a lot of time cloaked trying to find those sweet spots with the cover, I think I have found some optimal postions, but need cloak to get to them and I can only cross my fingers they remain just as valid on Insanity...The hover van, is that what I'm hearing? Haven't managed to eyeball it as yet, or is that the one that...gnrgnrgnr...landed on my Shep once..:(...pancaked...:(.

Vasir is a nightmare with her jumping from place to place and her shock waves....yep, I was confused at first, unitl I remembered I could freeze the scene and find her...I tried Jack once for a bit of shockwave pay back ...:)...but if I remember rightly, Miranda has warp, I haven't tried her with Vasir before...thank you for the heads up.

About Zaeed, I found him an excellent addition to the early game when you have a shortage of mid-to-long range damage options. He's also excellent for the disruptor ammo. For this same reason, I find myself using Jacob a lot for the incendiary ammo.

Oh, and in Insanity, your go-to heavy weapon is the arc projector. I never found much use for it in Normal, or even Hardcore, but on Insanity, it's an absolute godsend.

Oh yes, I have noticed that about the Arc Gun :)....strips so much shield and slows them down, it's saved my hide on a few occasions now.

Best time I had with Zaeed alongside my Infiltrator on Insanity was Garrus Recruitment mission.  I had focused on Assaination Cloak and the passive, so I brough along Zaeed (with Squad Disruptor Ammo) and Grunt (with Squad Incendiary Ammo).  That allowed me to always have whatever ammo power I needed to be able to one-shot any non-Krogan mercs and mechs even outside of Cloak with the Mantis.  That let me use Cloak for close tactical strikes with the Shuriken.

Even brought Zaeed with me to close the shutters, after making sure Grunt's Squad Incendiary Ammo was on our weapons first before leaving the Krogan with Garrus.  Had more sniper upgrades at that point than shotgun so Zaeed was a beast with weapon damage.

(wasn't NG+ obviously)

I just did that tonight. Garrus' recruitment mission is extremely fun as an infiltrator I think. There's ammo all over the place so you can just go nuts and snipe everything.

I also did Grunt's recruitment mission before so I'd have the sniper headshot upgrade. I brought Miranda and Zaeed, with Squad Disruptor. Helps me snipe those Blue Suns goons.

Most fun moment was this: Remember the pyro that hides around a corner near one of the shutters, just waiting to stagger you to death? Well he can't do that if you're cloaked. He also doesn't like it when you snipe his fuel tanks :)

Yep, I made sure I had the sniper upgrades before doing Garrus's RM...love the sniping opportunities on his mission and was relieved to find I could still one shot kill most of those mooks on Insanity...took Miranda and Zaeed, swapping between Disruptor and Cryo. Funnily enough after all my concern about the 3rd shutter, I actually found it do-able and didn't have too much trouble with it...it was the Pyro Vorcha and Garm himself who proved to be my nightmares...I tried doing what you did Termokanden, cloak and snipe the Pyro Vorcha, I had successfully cloaked and sniped my way down to him at a fast pace, but just lost it with him, took me 3 times dying at his hands (the fire knocks you away from cover) before I finally successfully sniped his tank...I don't know what went wrong, just kept having a bad moment with him and missing the tank :-(, was the only place I died on that mission and KEPT doing it...gnrgnrgnr :-(....Garm had me backing fast down the hallway, he, for me, was very hard to kill on Insanity.

I am on the home run, have done all the RM's and LM's and about to start the Suicide Mission....What I have learnt in this game...I take back my ignoring Mordin, he is a life saver :-), has become a favorite...Husks and Pretorians are a breeze following the advice everyone was so kind to give here...Thank you....A quick note on that, I mentioned the low wall just in front of the door you come through on Horizon....shooting one of the Scions from there still works a charm, if you don't go down the stairs (it activates the Husks), you can still just see one of the Scions (move a little to your right along the stairs) and it takes 6 shots from the Widow to kill it.

The Husks were still a nightmare, on the IFF Mission though...I followed advice for teams and took Mordin and Grunt (I didn't find the Fire Storm (HW) of any use :-(....)...had to spring the squaddies back to life a few times, though I think I would have really struggled with that mission without those two. I still can't believe I managed not to die at all on that mission, came very close a few times though :-).

I reckon the three hardest missions on Insanity are the Husks on the IFF mission,  the Varren on Grunts LM and the Collectors on the platforms on the Collector ship.

I have given up Dominance as my bonus power...yes, I know I was warned...thank you again...I am now contrite and have learnt. I tried out Reave for a while for the shield stripping ability, not too bad, had fun with it...But the winner for me is....dun, dun, dun...STASIS! :-)...LOVE it! :-)...my new get out of jail free card, it saved me too many times to mention....Mook on top of me, I'm going to die...Stasis it! :-)....Shoot a few more mooks while waiting, then relentless drill with the Locust/Tempest and mook is dead :-)...love Stasis :-).

Have also learned Locust for where I can keep distance, Tempest where they swarm you....thank you again for the advice :-).

This was the first time I took Legion on Tali's LM mission also...so glad I did...I was expecting the battle too be tough from the small balcony in the second to last room...not so with Legion on the team...I love him and Tali on the Mechs and Geth together...between them they mop the floor with mechanical mooks.

Thank you so much again to you all...I don't know if I could have done it with out the advice...so very appreciated.

Now for the SM :-(...am nervous :-(...I am assuming I don't need to do the side missions or DLC's for the Insanity Achievement?

Don't think so. Anyway the SM is not the toughest mission, not in my opinion anyway. Once you've been through the Collector ship you've pretty much seen it all before. Well except for the Reaper, but that one is 100% armor so Incinerate is great, and as an infiltrator you have an easier time hitting the eyes while the thing is moving.

Just now I learned that the hardest mission is Windows. In the middle of a boss fight, it shut down to install upgrades. Sigh.

The Collector Ship :-(...Oh Lordy...I found the platforms a nightmare :-(...I died 3-4 times on the platforms, it was only determination that stopped me from cheating and lowering the difficulty...I want that Insanity Achievement...'The PRIIIIZE!!!'... :-)...Oh gods, not Jacob :-). If the SM comes anywhere close to that, it's going to be a long painful limp for me through SM...Hmmm, Reaper 100% armor on Insanity, I think Shep will be paying a visit to the Retrain Skills before he activates the Omega Relay, max that Incinerate for this run...Thank you for the heads up.

LOL....Me having an easier time hitting the eyes as a Infiltrator...you haven't seen me play huh :-)....Standard, not wildly swaying mooks, I specialize in head shots, whittled it down to a fine art actually....funnily enough I have had a couple of requests from some friends recently... who have watched me play...to join them on their MMO games as a  sniper in their groups, which shocked me...I wasn't really a gamer until ME (hooked on ME) and don't see myself as a great player...As for that swinging Reaper though...RAAAHH!! STOP MOVING SO MUCH, DAMN YOU!!! :-)

OUCH!! Thats gotta hurt...much like my  XBox choosing to freeze and crash just as I took the final kill shot on Enyala...gnrgnrgnr...was not happy...grrr...:-(....I feel for you Termokanden
I HAVE MY INSANITY ACHIEVEMENT!!...WOOHOO!!!....HAPPY DANCE!!!...I really hadn't thought I would be able to do it...very chuffed with myself :-D.

Termokanden...what do you mean Collector Ship was easier than SM??!!! :-)....As I fearfully predicted, yes, the SM was a slow, painful limp for me...I seem to have a thing about doing things in three's...Each section of the SM's I died three times before success...I was really wondering if I could do it, kept walking off, taking a breather, having a think...how do I do this, then coming back and trying again...my frustrated patience finally paid off :-D.

Thank you so much everyone for your help, I couldn't have done it without the tips and advice...HAPPY DANCE, HAPPY DANCE,...I have achieved Insanity :-D...Next step, LotSB on Insanity :-)...Taking a breather first though...still stoked and riding on the wings of my new game achievement :-D.
