So I am just about to start DA2, can anyone recommend some mods? I am mostly looking for character creation mods but feel free to mention others that you found to be worthwhile.

I suggest playing mostly without mods for the first playthrough; cosmetic mods, however, aren't going to affect gameplay that much.

After completing the game pretty much as it is, as Crimea says, i highly recommend anything by Sunnie22.

oh how I wish I could load the nexus right now. It is down. I want to see the playdough hair into real hair mod, and the mabari one. Can't believe I missed them :/
