Old teammates vs new characters

It feels like I'm the only one here, but I don't care about old teammates at all. I've seen everything about them already, they're pretty stale. I like to explore new and exciting content, and teammates are a major part of it. I like the uncertainty of new characters' motivations, the fun of establishing relationships from stratch.
In ME2, when you worked with Miranda and Jacob for the first time, Shepard asked them, would you be comfortable following my orders? and I was feeling just as apprehensive as Shepard, and thrilled when they acknowledged my leadership. Recruiting Grunt was a challenge with a chance of failure. When you activated Legion, you didn't know if it's going to attack you. They're strangers, and you're venturing on a new, unexplored, hazardous territory when apporaching them. That's fun.
Garrus, on the other hand...I was surprised how little interaction he had. It felt like he was not supposed to be here - almost like he wasn't here. I'd rather not have a character at all than in such a manner. Wouldn't want to see old teammates in ME3 with only a few lines of conversation. Better see them die heroically and then work with new characters. What do you think?
Also, I really wouldn't like to work with humans. I can do that in real life. Feels like a waste of an interesting fantasy setting full of fascinating aliens. Why have that alien-filled galaxy only to have humans in your crew?
I'm filled with trepidation concerning the confirmed VS as teammates. That's one human already, more to come. Also, I have a confession to make...I've never played ME1, and it's too late to do it now, because I'm afraid I would be put off by the graphics. So I know nothing of VS, except what I've seen of them on Horizon. So you may understand why it terrifies me that VS might turn out to be pivotal characters, the way Miranda, Jacob, and Mordin were in ME2.
Besides...another confession. I gave the base to TIM, and my characters didn't praise me for it in the end. That efficienty ruined any lasting connection I might have had to them. I mean, they might have at least mentioned how I managed to keep them all alive...you know, congratulate me on my successful mission. Everybody acts like an oracle, like they already know what will come out of my final decision, while I sincerely have no idea at all. I admire anyone who managed to keep the base, because the peer pressure not to do so is immense.
It's clear, though, that old teammates will be present in ME3, because a lot of people are attached to them. The question is how many of them will be there, and whether their presence will have substance or just a few lines like Garrus. Imagine all of them being present here, and none of them saying anything at all, because there's too many of them to give every one a dialogue of a proper length!
I'm easily attached to new characters if they're well-written and interesting, and not overly hostile to my Shepard (galaxy hates Shepard enough already, he needs more people on his side.) And it has nothing to do with the time spent with them. For example, the entire game wasn't enough to make me feel anything for Thane, but I fell in love with Kal'Reegar during the few minutes that I've met him. (I admire suicidal bravery, and I was satisfied that he stood down when I persuaded-ordered him to stay put. And he has realistic views on quarians fighting in any other manner than from orbit. When my Shepard asked him where he's going to serve next, I felt like she wanted to keep in touch.)
Well, all things considered, you may understand why I want to leave the emotional baggage of old characters behind and start afresh. They go their own ways too often and leave you behind, and I want to be able to do the same thing to them. And I do like to see new things. I want to play a completely new game, and if I want to spend time with old characters again, I'll replay ME2. Or is it just me? What do you guys think?

Full time, part time, or cameo? If teammates, that might be already enough for a crew. Depends on how many people are allowed in the crew, of course.
Actually, I would really like to see Mordin in my crew again. He had the most extensive dialogue in the game, and I grew attached to him. He's very well written, with strong motivations and clever dialogue. His line about anthropomorphizing the galaxy haunts me still, because my Shepard doesn't have anyone to fight for.
And I'd like to see Legion again. He showed more interest in my Shepard than Jacob did.
Heh. Watched LotSB on youtube. Can't stop laughing about that moment when Liara lets you fall on the pavement. Especially ironic if you're romancing her. She drops you, literally. I couldn't shake off the feeling that she's playing you to get your help, and her true feelings come out in a crucial moment. As they say, character is the choices he makes under pressure. Still, she's interesting - in a true "evil shadowy intel dealer" style, even though she's just a fledging. Will she remember your help, or will she sell you when she masters her power base?

That said, I think all the characters have enough fans already to justify bringing them back. Miranda seems like the second or third most popular character, after Garrus and maybe Wrex. I definitely don't want more than 2 or 3 new people, not enough time for character development.

Other than announced people, I want Mordin, one of our Krogans, Legion, Tali, and Kasumi Back. I don't think I'll get Kasumi, but everyone else has a chance.

Usually its Tali most popular, then Kaidan (the polls i have done tend to show that), then miranda and garrus being virtually the same popularity wise and then wrex
but i do feel you are right about the old team mates in ME2 where terrible if they were not LI's because of the obvious lack of dialogue especially calibrations from Garrus was crazy.
I do feel though they most likely have fixed this in ME3 due to so many people taking the mick about calibrations and demanding more dialogue

Yeah. For example, Jacob is usually pegged as being the "most unpopular" character, but I believe that, in general, he's pretty well liked. He just doesn't seem to stand out for most people.mrsph wrote...
Polls here are a poor way to determine popularity.
Though the overall trend seems to be Tali --> Garrus --> Mordin/Miranda/Wrex.

Agreed! I can't understand the desire for more characters!
Did you play the last 2 games without speaking to anyone onboard?? How could you want to save the galaxy with someone who hasn't been through those sh*tstorms w/ you??

Also, there's a common misconception that "you have burnt up all dialogue in this game" means "these characters are static and cannot develop any further."
Makes you wonder how some book and television series can run for year after year with virtually the same damn cast... What?! What do you mean characters develop as they are exposed to new situations? I thought only exposition about their pasts and stuff was all that counted!

I did speak to them, and they were pretty short with me. Always too busy to converse. A drawback to the party interaction system, but it didn't change the fact that I constantly felt unwanted and rejected. And then you'd hit the romantic branching part, which I could always spot, and if you're not the required gender, the interactions would just cease. I just want to put it all behind me.
I don't know, it just feels like all character archs are complete, and they have nowhere else to develop, and the relationship archs you have with them are pinnacled at getting their loyalty, so what else is there to see? I like excitement, uncertainly, rocky relationship, and the struggle to win your teammates devotion. You already had an opportunity to benefit from their loyalty in the suicial mission, why do this again? Playing with existing characters would feel more like an epilogue than a new game. Of course, it's the last game in the trilogy...Does that mean it's only going to be wrapping up everything and never giving new content?
