I can't remember how many times I've watched that video. It's just beautiful, and I've watched it twice with my eyes closed, it's really incredible. Even the ambient noise is beautiful.

That video is ridiculous. Sounds so good it hurts. Off topic a bit: I got the GoW3 beta today. Pfffffffffft. It's really, really good.

what was wrong with ME2's gun sounds? I thought they were great!

They were great, but they lacked the power that gunshots really lack.  The only ones that really came close were the Mattock and the Phalanx.  Though Bioware can take cues not just from gunshots, but from explosions and other ambient combat noises as well.  DICE really has those nailed down, and the only developer that comes in second with ambient combat noises is Kojima Productions.

Some of the weapons just didn't have that satisfying "punch" that some of the others did.

A good example would be enemy mercs. Have you listened to their weapon fire lately? It sounds like rain splattering on the cover, not bullets.

Rob, can you say if SFX from gunshots will differ based on the surfaces they hit? i.e. shooting a metal door will make different SFX than shooting into the ground or a tree, etc.

Precisely. I would love to hear more of these kinds of sounds , the sheer cacophony of rounds being loosed

The GI video said that gunfire will sound different based on relative positioning, distance, and environment, so I would assume surface sounds would play a role, too.

It helps to get reference and listen to actual guns and all the fullness of sound they have.

Yeah, we had surface typed bullet impacts in ME2. As with everything else, we'll be enhancing them for ME3.

We've been making iterative steps with our audio for a few games now and I think ME3 is going to be the one where we really shine. We're finally not switching audio engines like we did on ME1, DAO, ME2 and DA2... so instead we're spending our time making it sound really awesome in a system we already know, rather than reinventing the wheel again. Good times! :)

Great!

I suppose this has less to do with audio, so not your department, but will there be cover that we can punch through with weapons, or is this probably asking too much of a change?

Ha ha, you'll have to get that out of Christina or one of the gameplay folks... I'm not sure what info they're divulging at this point. Me on the other hand... I can't seem to stop blabbering on here :D

Well if this isn't pushing the line for info, will enemies be getting their weapons audio stepped up as well? As I mentioned before, enemy weapons just didn't seem to have the same oomph as sheps weapons did. Save for when missles exploded near shep, and blowing out his eardrums of course.

After reading the article for Brink, I hope Bioware can come up with or has come up with something similar, because the way audio is handled there makes me exicted to play it.

Yeah, the non-player weapons are getting a complete overhaul as well, the results make the combat feel so much more 'real' and satisfying.

That was a great interview about Brink, I've been looking forward to it for a while :) Most of the things mentioned in there are pretty common nowadays and we've already implemented similar systems. We actually have some very cutting edge audio systems in ME3 that (as far as I'm aware) have never been done before.. but I'm not allowed to talk about it just yet.

The biggest difference between game audio nowadays is less to do with the tech and more to do with what you do with it and the content you use... we're almost at a stage where the tech isn't the barrier to great sounding games anymore, so it's up to us to make the most of it. You can be sure we're working our butts off to make it as great as possible for you guys! :)

Excellent thank you! Is it a bad thing if the thought of an audio overhall is getting me excited again? I remember a day when it was the graphics that did that.

@ Rob

Can you say if we'll be able to hear the more sentient enemies actually talk with each other more in battle? I think it would be awesome to hear an enemy commander direct suppressing fire at "the biotic" or Shepard, or to hear more context sensitive battle chatter, such as "Watch out for the krogan!"

I noticed in ME2 there was more of this, such as Miranda's "Krogan charging!"

its a real shame but for a big bulk of my gaming life I've played with the audio low (parent's just don't understand), and out of habit I've continued on into adulthood to game, completely alone, still with the audio very very low. Only recently have I started cranking it up since getting new fancy HD tv a couple months back and WOW, we've come a long way since the Atari 2600 beeps and boops.

So I look forward to hearing the area around be chunked and shredded by return fire.

I seriously can't wait for mass effect 3. And thanks Rob for replying to a lot of the audio topics, really puts my mind at rest considering audio effects are very important especially in a sci fi game.

Audio really is an important part of any video game. I mean... Audio can pull me into immersion much better and deeper than any sort of visual can.

This is totally true, and after watching those Rob Blake/sound videos, I had a newfound tremendous appreciation for the excellent work of the sound team.

I wonder if they were the ones who devised the reaper voices...

Yes that would be nice. The enemy banter was already much improved, and I think they already do that to a limited extent. However hearing a merc team coordinate to fight shep would be much more intimidating than seeing it, at least it would have in ME2. ( I don't know how environements will be in ME3. In two they constricted your field of vision.)
