Hi,

something i don't quite get with this game. Historically when you play this sort of RPG you start off with, say, just your charactor, then you assemble a party at some point, or over time generally - the point being that you all start with low stats.

In this game however i can immediately pick team members who are already massively levelled up. Therefore when i get into fights they just stride in and bash everything straight away and it's all over. Any strategy or thought just goes straight out the window.

Is this right? It all seems to be very silly and not very thought through. You'd think that you'd have to have a lot of gold or something to attract such a player but no, you can get them right away.

I'm playing the platinum edition off steam and the default campaign.

Is this normal?

Thx

This is another example - i'm on the main map walking from A to B and come across some creatures rated as "extremely dangerous" or something like that - the warning is there - don't attack. I can't avoid a contact though and i'm in the fight. My high level characters stride in and take them down before i've even had a chance to lay a spell on the enemy. Wth?? I thought this game was supposed to be balanced....??? Why does the game say that it's a bad idea fighting something where in reality i take them down in seconds??

That doesn't sound right at all. Where abouts in the game are you, and who are the overpowered characters who seem to have joined you?

Maybe this would be better posted in a spoilers-allowed forum, I'm not sure how much you're even allowed to tell me here (I would say the names of the location and characters are OK, but some might disagree).

Generally, in the OC at least, you pick up characters throughout the story and they track your level. The difficulty rating of creatures is jsut a guide, but it sounds like what's happening is that it's showing the difficulty for your character, whereas your overpowered companions actually will find it easy (IIRC it shows difficulty based off the selected character).

ok so i'm in leira's trick the starting tavern and in the guest book i can register my party. It was the same on the boat btw in the intro scene/beginning.
From the "vault" list i can choose from abuot 50 charactors ranging from lvl 1 to about 20 and seemingly all classes. I can pick any of these that i like.
The charactors that i have in my party now are :- myself(lvl5), maricaa warter bearer(18), eviel whithunter(18), evan wavetouched (err a split class level here of 8 and 9)

Is this right? Appreciate your response.

So you're playing SoZ. SoZ is meant for a level 1 party (level 4 after the boat IIRC). So a level 18 character will be obviously overpowered against a bunch of level 4 enemies.

In the guest book you should see your previously created characters, so for example, if you completed the OC with a character and exported it, it will show there. But you can also create new characters there, and that's what you should do.

To summarize: you start with a newly created character. In the boat, use the guest book and create 3 more new characters, and add them to your party.

Ok.

So what is the point of the vault? Or rather, why are there a bunch of high level charactors in there that you add to your party? I can understand the vault from the point of view of saving charactors as you evolve your team - but why does it come pre-stocked with high level charactors?

I don't know, I haven't uploaded them, but I guess the point of high level characters is high level modules. And if that's all you've found at the Vault, you haven't looked carefully...

Edit: I was thinking of the Vault, not localvault.

No i can see all the other charactors in there as well - and i didn't have ot upload any of them. They're there from the go.

However i'd done as you said and created a new scratch party so let's see how i go! With more difficulty than before...:)

The localvault comes with low and high level versions of each character. Those are primarily for people who prefer to select a main character to play with rather than creating one. Some people may be intimidated by the variety of options creating characters, especially if not familiar with D&D rules. For the OC (Official Campaign) and SoZ (Storm of Zehir) you should either build a new character or select the low level version of a localvault character. For MotB (Mask of the Betrayer) you can select a higher level character since that expansion is intended to start at a higher level.

NWN2 was released in the order: Official Campaign, Mask of the Betrayer (which is a continuation of the Official Campaign, continuing with the same main character), and Storm of Zehir which is NOT a continuation of the Official Campaign and uses a new lead character.

Though the OC and SoZ are not directly related, there are characters and events in SoZ that you will appreciate more if you have already played the OC. So I suggest you play the OC first. When you start the game you can select the Official Campaign from the list of campaigns available.

One thing you will find, since you already started SoZ, is that the OC is quite different. Unmodified it does not allow the creation of a full party of characters. Instead you start with one main character and then along the way you will meet pre-designed companions. If you would rather create your own party members you will need to use a modification to the game. I recommend the OC Makeover SoZ Edition which is linked to below. I suggest you play the stock OC for a little while so that you can find out what you like and dislike about it as is. If you then read the Makeover description it will make more sense as to its features and whether or not it makes sense to install it.

Welcome to NWN2. If you continue to play SoZ then you should post your threads in the SoZ forum. This forum is primarily used for very general questions that do not include spoilers.

Regards

Thanks - a great explanation but with one (and i don't mean to sound pretentios here) mistake -  i bought the game off steam (SoZ) and i have not modded it in any way, and i was able to define a full party of four myself from the off...the first guestboook on the ship. It's the platinum edition if that means anything.

I take your point on posting here and in the future will take that on board.

Ta.

When you have SoZ installed (which you do because it is bundled in Platinum) all of the load screens say "Storm of Zehir" on them. That only means that the SoZ expansion is installed, it doesn't determine what campaign you are playing. What you are running is Neverwinter Nights 2 and when you click New Game and then New Campaign you can select which specific campaign you want to play. Platinum includes the three Obsidian campaigns: the NWN2 Official Campaign, Mask of the Betrayer, and Storm of Zehir. Storm of Zehir starts on a boat and allows you to select  a party of characters. If you select the NWN2 Official Campaign you will start in a room talking to a stoic elf. If you start MotB you begin in a barrow talking with a bald woman. If you download other campaigns from the vault they will also be listed there so that you can play them.

So to play the OC start the game, click Play, then New Game, then New Campaign, then Neverwinter Nights 2 Official Campaign. Then create a new character or select a 1st level character from the localvault and begin.  You will not be able to change your starting character later without starting over, so select something you like.

Thanks - one final question though. Why don't all my charactors join into a fight each time when i'm in a fight. The first round starts and maybe one of them attacks, the other two just sit at the edge of the screen and do nothing. They continue to do nothing even if i switch to them and walk them into the center of the action.

It doesn't always happen but it does happen sometimes and is really annoying. Do you know why that is?

Thx.

ok not sure what happened to my response there so i'll try again. Maybe i hit cancel....

Thanks for that - not quite what i was after but an explanation of the campains doesn't hurt thanks.

One further question - do you have any idea why sometimes when i go into a battle half my squad sit at the edge of the screen and simply do nothing? Even if i take control of them and walk them into the middle of the action they'll just sit there and do nothing at all? Is there a serious problem with the AI in this game as all the charactors are set to use the AI (otherwise standing around doing nothing is all you get), but as stated in some battles - probably around 40% half my team sit there like dumb****e$ and dont do a thing...

Thanks.

Maybe they're set to stand in place, type V,W,E to order them to follow and attack. Some AI settings can also influence that, like "follow distance".

Also make sure some of them are not in Puppet Mode.

This forum is slow to display new posts sometimes.  It may take a minute or two to show up.

My point was that SoZ allows you to create a party because party creation was a feature Obsidian added in that expansion.  They did not retrofit that feature into the OC or MotB, so in those campaigns you cannot create a party unless you install modifications like my OC Makeover and MotB Makeover.  When you start the OC you will see that there is no option to add any more characters than the first one you created/selected. During the course of the OC you will encounter other pre-made characters who will join you in your quest (called "companions"), but you cannot create them and you have limited ability to alter them. They have lots to say though and are required for the plot.
