A fair point. And I'm not disagreeing with it entirely. If given the choice, unique armor beats out unique catsuit any day of the week.
But keep in mind, during my Kotor playthrough, I refused to give Carth, Canderous, Bastila, etc, any armor beyond what they started, although in effect it required gimping my party (to a degree). I did this because I felt those were how Bioware intended the characters and thought each look suited them best, far more than inventory armor (which seemed designed with PC in mind).
In this sense, Mass Effect 1's approach (with Liara in full armor), or Morrigan with actual mage robes, etc, these are huge pet peeves of mine.
I don't think the question here regards inventory, but appearance. And how appropriate the look we've seen for Ash in ME 3. If Ash's picture had armor that looked like, say Kaidan's but with a more feminine appearance, I doubt this thread would exist.
It depends on the character, imo. Realism doesn't mean as much to me as it does to others, I understand. Certain issues (Thane's outfit) don't bother me, because I still think it suits his character very well, more than full armor would. In other cases (Miranda), I was less impressed, though the recent alternate appearance pack seems to have done a better job of 'suiting her up' while still keeping her...exposed for some.
Let me put it like this: if Ashley can have unique armor, that's great. What I don't want is another inventory system where I'm constantly cycling through armor which Bioware has only given a passing glance for party members. That's all I'm saying.
It's less about reality with me and more about consistency with past games:
Marines wear armor
Spectres wear armor (those that we've seen, anyway)
Ashley, in both games, wore armor.
Kaidan wore armor in both games, and seems to still do so in ME3.
Ash in ME3, early indications, say, wears a catsuit. It flies in the face of everything we know of the character, her profession, and her prospective new profession. And, if this game follows Bioware's tradition of late in saying "You will accept the look we assign them and like it!" We are unlikely to have much choice in altering it, be it with inventory or alterate appearances.
Take KOTOR for example. Let's say a KOTOR 3 was made featuring Bastila again, but instead of Jedi robes, she dressed more akin to Red Sonya. And there was absolutely nothing you could do about it except wait for upwards of a year and pay extra for an alternate appearance pack
Or if Dragon Age 3 was made, with the return of Morrigan, who inexplicably starts wearing chain mail and wielding a sword ("That's funny. I don't remember her taking the arcane warrior specialty")
