What if Ashley is wearing some sort of advanced nano suit that has the same damage mitigation as heavy armor? Isn't less bulky and restrictive armor considered a good thing?

Heavens no, I reject the technology of the Mass Effect universe and insist everyone wear retarded armor. I'm a very milquetoast person, you see.

I'm astounded by the number of people who are ignorant of the Mass Effect universe and think this is Gears of War where everyone has to wear big clunky unrealistic armor around.

So your solution is to go into a firefight wearing a catsuit or a nightie?

If I have the technology to prevent damage regardless of armor I would wear whatever the hell I wanted.

Guess what, they have the technology.

That was the Onyx armor set, it was pink in general, that means everyone (including Shepard) wearing it would look ridiculous.

Gues what,  they don't. Maybe you should read the codex once in a while.

I mean, what the heck is the camo value on that thing? What was she doing, fighting inside a giant chocolate box?

Well to be fair almost everyone in ME looks like they are fighting inside a giant chocolate box with neon lights.

I think Shepard does look kinda ridiculous wearing armor when she has kinetic barriers blocking stuff anyways. Though I'm a bit more forgiving since Shepard is N7. Nobody else in the squad is N7.

That's a good point and alleviates the issue somewhat, but they specifically chose it as the poster design for the poster female of the game. We had manly Shepard, enigmatic Saren, intriguing Garrus and pretty-in-pink tough chick Ashley in those promotion spots, you know?

You are right, though. No matter what it's a ridiculous set. XD

Shields and Biotics only prevent some damage, what happens if such technology fails? (Which they do after 1 or 2 seconds of continuous fire) Would you go out and prance around in your bikini while waiting for your shields to recharge?

hahaha oh god massive failure of ME knowledge.

What do you think the shields are that regenerate whenever you get shot? Ceramic armor plates in your armor reparing their cracks?

So lets say your shields go down and you have no cover in sight, who do you think would last longer, a soldier wearing protective armor, or a soldier wearing nothing but jockstraps?

And keep in mind Ashley is a soldier, so no "backup biotic barriers yo" replies please.

In Mass Effect 1 Ashley said:

Kaidan: Those Asari commandos are impressive. Lightly armored, but their speed more than makes up for it.
Ashley: Unless that speed lets them outrun bullets, I’m more inclined to stick with nice solid armor and a big gun.
Kaidan: Point taken.

So why has Ashley opted to steal Samus Aran's Zero suit?

Except they do have the technology look at Shepard and the upgrades he/she can get in ME2. According to ME 2 the lattice shunting though it's in game effect is +10% to health, according to its discription it dramaticly reduces damage taken and Shepard buys the upgrades at stores.

Just generic armor that thankfully has fallen by the wayside in favor of a more personalized identity for the characters. Fitting since they're no longer standard issue soldiers you got stuck with on a mission, but a long time friend who has developed into a real person. Thrilled they decided to have the character design reflect the character development instead of being lazy and sticking them with another default cookie cutter body/armor.

Sure, but that doesn't mean it have to look unpractical. In fact I think a heavy set of armour would fit Ashleys character better than just another unzipped catsuit.

She probably recognized that the Brawl board on GameFAQs regularly pulls over a million posts and wanted to join in the festivities... at any cost.

First of all, can I ask this obsession with bikinis and nighties and "prancing" you guys seem to have? Is this some kind of false dichotomy/strawman ya'll are trying to set up like it's going to win you a debate? haha.

When shields and biotics fail, you're dead. That's why you get well trained people for your squad. If there was no danger, then any schmuck could join the squad and save the universe and there is no turmoil.

Ablative cermanic plating is minimal protection against light speed projectiles and is not worth the loss in mobility.

Kinetic barriers are NOT force fields

They stop small, fast moving objects.

Not:

slower moving objects

fire

radiation,

toxins

enviromental hazards.

Charging krogan, rachni venom, Collector particle beams, even a really hot planet, will kill Shep with or without barriers.  Thus the need for combat hardsuits.  Something ME 2 seemed to have forgotten about.

You have armour because shields don't always stop a bullet from hitting you and don’t stop slow moving objects or beams. Sometimes they just slow down the bullet enough that it is stopped by the plates instead of killing you. Not wearing any armour at all is stupid. Barriers do not work like shields and take energy and concentration to maintain. Neither barriers nor shields protect you from environmental hazards.

Sure they can, just look at Dragon Age  2

DA2 is a fantasy game where women wearing chainbail bikis, half naked people wielding big swords, magic and people even wearing normal clothing into battle is the norm. ME is a sci-fi game with bullets, explosions, zero G locations, toxic areas in it. Wearing proper amrour in places like that make sense, not what happen in ME2 where some people didn't even wear proper armour.

You do realize that most combat casualties are not caused by linear bullet paths right? Ricochets, fragmentation and all sorts of flying things tend to ruin your idea of fashionable diversity.

Maybe the samus cotume isn't really her armor she wears into battle, and she's just picked up cosplay since ME1. I hope she lets Shepard be Kraid.

I wonder if they'll add an option allowing players to suggest she take up JRPG cosplay. I can think of a few fan favorites that would win BioWare multiple awards from such esteemed organizations as Anime Nation.

I know, I'm just expressing my doubts towards Bioware's more recent attempts at making good design choices...And failing horribly to do so.
