I can never play nice Hawke because he's such a little ****. I thought paragon Shepard was bad, but nice Hawke puts him to shame. At least paragon Shep is somewhat assertive and doesn't kiss EVERYONE's ass.

This I agree with. RPGs are a fun way to explore other walks of life as it were. Its why I never EVER play humans in my games except when its force fed to me /shakes fist at DAII. Why would I want to be what I already am?

However I have friends that no matter what they are doing they can never seem to break free from the core of their comfort zone (always play humans and the same exact class whatever game we try) or the excepted norms. Which is a shame really.

It rather boils down to the same argument I get into with some of my co workers.
Random co worker: "Why do you play those stupid video gmes?' "Can't you do normal adult things like everyone else?"
Me: "What like smoking 5 packs of cigarettes a day while drinking a bottle of vodka in front of a reality TV marathon? Ooh your right so much better! Its really very simple I kill things in video games so you get to continue to exist in the real world. Now ****** off and bother someone else"

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you're playing the game wrong.

I think it's because I most enjoy playing characters that I can at least partially relate to, or be sympathetic with. It depends a lot on the context of the choice, but picking an evil option simply because it is evil, and my character is evil, usually ends up ruining the immersion for me.

That's what I tell myself anyway. The real reason is probably because I am way too conformist.

Are you talking about personality or choices when you say "evil"? The choices offered seem to be pretty much the same for all three personalities its just the red options usually lead to action, a bully-ish disposition, and a chance to intimidate people in fun and exciting ways.

I just can't bring myself to do nasty things that I would not do in real life. For me RPG is about playing the character how I feel is right to me. Ocasionaly I try the "dark side" choices but it never feels right to me.

This is how I am as well. I would also add that playing "dark side, closed fist, renegade", or "evil" character tends to put me in a constant bad mood, and I don't want to always be in a bad mood.

I tend to go with double playthroughs to address this. First playthrough I make all the decisions I would... Second, I go nuts. My second Hawke was probably the biggest hypocrite and assface in the history of Hawke's. ...To be honest, I enjoyed it so much more, that second playthrough.

It's fun to be a jerk.
I do hilariously evil things in most games.
I remember in oblivion I trained my blade skill on Shadowmere until I knocked her off cliffs.
In fable I lured hords of people to To the chapel of Skorm and randomly killed people for property.
It's too boring to be a good guy.

At times I like to make a few "evil" choices. But I can never find a connection with a fully evil character, even if I plan out playing a straight up bad person; I end up quiting mid game.

Because even though you can be nice in real life, you can't be as powerful. To try and to the right thing AND have the power to back that up is an appealing fantasy. Of course it still doesn't mean that you're necessarily able to make things better overall. But some righteous slaver butt kicking is fun.

In addition, I'm not sure why you think most people are nice in real life. Seems to me if they could get away with it a lot of folks would be big jerks - and they revel in that chance while playing games because there's no real life consequences. I just can't identify with that kind of character either (to agree with PunkNouveau).

This, so much.

Just look at Zevran, Merrill, and Isabela for example.

The most badass people I know IRL are all extremely nice.

Regrettably - I was not a good person in my youth (I know, all of you are paragons of goodness in real life).

My reasoning for choosing exclusively the good or neutral choices - because the rotten ones feel trite and old hat.

I find a man struggling to be good more interesting than an animal indulging in atavism.

Then according to your logic there are no "nice" player characters because you can't get through the game without killing tons of people... no matter how nice you are.

You see no difference between killing people for money and power and killing people who are attacking you?
Zevran for instance is one of my favorite characters but I don't see him as nice at  all.
He Is a killer. he has said he enjoys the hunt.
So he is sexy, dangerous, and witty but where do you get nice?

I only have one goody two-shoes Hawke. Ugh. Never doing that again. Playing as one really makes me sick. I always play a renegade type of person in these kinds of games. Although, to certain characters, I don't want to be mean to. So I can't be fully evil on any of my playthroughs.

Um, I never said Zev was nice, nor do I think he is. *shrugs*
I was simply pointing out that you needed to clarify what it was you meant by "Um, killing people isn't nice."

I enjoy playing chaotic good characters. It's not a black or white issue. It's very possible to be a merciful person who breaks a few bones for the greater good.

I know what you mean, I made the choice to kill Anders at the end of DA2..I was depressed for the rest of the day! The same goes for Bioshock..I dont know too many who could harvest the little sisters.

Because I already kill people in real life so it's nice to be a good person for a change.

My mage was diplomatic 95% of the time. It was great. She was so nice and helpful. And she didn't do blood magic because she felt it was unethical.

The game is surprisingly fun to play if you want to be good and sweet. I thought she'd be kicked in the butt far more than she was.
