Hmm. should've figured not everyone would gladly accept having to participate in the Exalted March itself, as it immediately forces the player to take a stance they might not perceive as a something that's necessarily good (like the Wardens or Spectres).
How about the team pulls a
The Third Age where we, perhaps once again as a Fereldan outsider, control a small group that follows in the footsteps of an Exalted March (either to stop it or join it), basically witnessing the misery and destruction even an arguably just cause brings with it? In most towns you'd visit, you'll be confronted with the atrocities both sides of the conflict are capable of. Possible companions could include an Templar that was left behind and is initially eager to join up with his/her comrades (and will remain that way or not depending or your interactions).
Eventually your obviously charismatic and helpful PC gathers so large a following of people from both sides that his/her journey essentially becomes an Exalted March upon itself, which you may use for whatever purpose you want when you finally hit Minrathous (alternatively, the Silent Plains).
As for a decent personal reason to follow the original March in the first place, BioWare could easily come up with a simple "they killed your mage mother and your brother/best friend-rival joined them" plot and present in such a brilliant way that the players feel they HAVE TO catch up, either for answers or revenge.
Edit: Or follow the March as a Seeker like the above poster suggested, possibly left behind yourself, instead of another 'normal human' such as Hawke.
