Jacob works for Cerberus because they're fighting the reapers. Once htey stop doing that he's gone. He quit's along with Miranda should you decide to blow the base up. so no, he's not a hypocrite. (he also saves the councils with Cerberus).

And you think there's absolutely no killing involved in that goal?

Pfff, please...

Jacob's a soldier, of course there's killing involved. He's just not an assasin and he doesn't kill Civilians like an assasin would. I bet if Zaeed was an on disc character Jacob would have a problem with him too especilly since he wants to let Civilians die to kill someone. being a soldier doesn't make him a hypocrite for not liking Assasin's.

Because soldiers never kill civilians.

I'm afraid this is incorrect.

some soliders kill civilians (if they're ordered, or if Civilians attack, etc.) but Jacob does not. Thane as assasinated civilians (how he met his wife in fact) and is told to kill people who are not dangers to anyone but his employers. Jacob is a soldier loyal to a military body or cause (fighting the Reapers alonside Shepard.) his dislike for Thane is understandable.

Does it help that I'm an anglophile? And that I own all of Red Dwarf on DVD? Which I totally paid full price for?

Well... I can sympathize with Thane for not liking Jacob but vice versa... I dunno. I think that it's because Jacob is a kinda dude, while Thane is loyal and dignified. I think that there is a real distinction there.

True. To horribly paraphrase Pratchett, in the future black and white will live together in perfect harmony... and gang up on green.

The title of this thread made me think of "Joanie Loves Chachi". Which, of course, made me think of Jacob and Thane in a sitcom called "Jacob Hates Thane". Which, of course, made me picture them standing back to back with their arms folded as the title of said show appeared beneath them as 80's music played. Which, of course, made me think of an episode I would make up which would have Thane steal Jacob's girl, only to have them realize their friendship is more important in the end.

Where am I?

what distinction. Jacob has concerns because since thane is an assasin for higher, someone could possibly contact him and pay him a large sum of money to kill Shepard in her sleep. While that doesn't happen, Jacob doesn't know Thane that well so he can only go off of his chosen profession.Image IPB They don't ahvea  loyalty ocnflict so Jacob must not hate Thane that much (like how Tali hates Legion enough to confront him in the AI core and how Jack hates miranda enough to go to her office.)

Jacob took an instant dislike to Thane before he even mentioned his son.

You don't see everything that happens. Cerberus has detailed dossiers on all those they recruit. Jacob knowing that Thane Krios has a son who was abandoned is probable. There are multiple facets to Jacobs dislike. He sees Thane as a lousy father, a hired murderer and a possible romantic rival in the case of a femshep who isn't even of the same species. They don't have an argument like Jack/Miranda or Tali/Legion because Jacob doesn't mind mouthing off at someone he doesn't like but isn't going to jeopardise the mission because of it.

Exactly, Legend. That's why the whole "Assassin vs Whine" is moot. It's really a perceptivenes issue. Like - you see someone who wears a gas mask and is naked from the waist down and think: "This guy I do not like".
Jacob sees someone who is an assassin and goes "This guy I do not like". Don't overthink it. Sometimes things are that simple.

not liking doens't mean he hates Thane. Also Jacob doesn't whine. as I said there's no loyalty conflict so Jacob's dislike must not be strong enough.

Both assassins and soldiers kills because they're told to.

Assassins just happens to be more subtle about it and gets more money.

And both rape and making love are just having sex with someone. Perfectly identical!

Thane murders for a living. Jacob used to make a living stopping killers from killing.

He has a plausible reason to distrust a known assassin.

Thane kills bad people for a living. Its something Jacob doesn't understand.

Thane killing bad people for a living (though not really, he is doing it on his own with no pay since he learned he was dying) is a more recent thing.
