I messed around with this a lot when I was building creature blueprints for a PW. We had overridden racialtypes.2da and racialsubtypes.2da, including some of the monster races, and I wanted them to match up for things like Ranger Favored Enemy bonuses and that kind of stuff.

First, are you using Override content or hak content? If it's hak, make sure the haks are attached to your module and any custom tlk is specified is being attached. To do this, click on view->Module Properties. After this stuff is attached, you will need to save and re-open the module (I usually close and re-open the whole toolset after attaching modules, but I don't know that you need to go that far).

Second, there are two spots in the creature's properties where you can look at the race. One is in the general "Properties" tab, and one is in the "Basics" tab. As I recall one of these may not necessarily show your custom tlk names, but at least one will show them. Usually, to set the race, you set the sub-race because sub-races are linked to (i.e. members of) races as set out by the 2da's.

Hope this helps. Let me know where the issue is more specifically and I will try to help you further.
