It was likely either done for fun or for some childish reasons against Sony

I wouldn't panic just yet. It's been several days and there have been no known reports of credit card fraud on a mass scale. If hackers stole credit cards they would have done something with it by now if that was the aim.

We can only hope it was stupid teenagers who were simply bored.
I'm a bit worried because I've bought stuff with a credit card on the PSN.

Wow, this is terrible. I wonder if I should cancel my PSN account...
You can't... Besides, it won't matter if they already have your info. stored somewhere.

Yeah, it's probably nothing......I'm just taking a precaution. All it took was a quick phone call to my credit card company and I have a new credit card on the way.

I noticed on article said they notified users of this but I seen nothing about it yet. I plan on contacting the bank when they open and I suggest anyone else that has used their card on PSN do the same. At the very least to take the banks advice and verify account security.
I copied this line out of an article here...
“While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility.”
Sony also commented on the fact that purchase history and credit card billing address information may also have been stolen.
“Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for
your credit card number, social security number or other personally
identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can
be confident Sony is not the entity asking.”

The bank will usually contact you if something unusual happens on your statements like a great deal of money drawn out in Syria or Australia or whatever country you don't live in or wouldn't normally travel to just to check up on it. I don't see a need to go all paranoia right now. I have online banking so i can just keep an eye on my money and see if any large ammounts dissapear. Though it's not like the card is the only one i use or the only bank i have an account with so if i have problems with one i always have backups.

I don't think people should be worried about their identities being stolen. I think fraudsters require more than just your address and birthday.

I just hope they can lock it back down so this never happens again. I have one credit card registered on PSN I will keep a very close eye on it. I will buy prepay cards for downloads for now on lesson learned.
change your passwords if you re-use passwords at all, the theft of personal data can be more damaging than stolen CC info as you can always dispute payments or alert for fraud with those... can't alert for fraud for personal data tho

I call BS on this one...

in the article they said they had linked their debit cards to their PSN accounts - there is no fraud alert on debit cards once the money is gone it's gone
so could be truth
(never ever use debit cards for online purchases, if you do put a withdrawal limit)

I know I'm being a bit paranoid but I feel better knowing that I spoke to the bank. I'm not canceling any cards just yet. I love online banking for that reason but mine can be a tad slow to show updates from time to time.

Seems we have a propaganda war between the hackers and Sony. Sony say they are evil and out to steal our information and the hackers are saying they are not targeting gamers.

Yeah, they've been after Sony ever since the whole Geohot mess...But it's ironic 'cuz in the end, it's the consumers who have to put up with this ****.
But I remember reading somewhere that the group behind this attack isn't Anonymous.

Well, Sony took down their own site so the consumers are directly affected because Sony took down PSN themselves. Not that I blame Sony, that was the correct course of action if they were compromised but the consumers are PSNless because of a decision Sony made...right or wrong.
