Seems we have a propaganda war between the hackers and Sony. Sony say they are evil and out to steal our information and the hackers are saying they are not targeting gamers.

Yeah, they've been after Sony ever since the whole Geohot mess...But it's ironic 'cuz in the end, it's the consumers who have to put up with this ****.

But I remember reading somewhere that the group behind this attack isn't Anonymous.

Well, Sony took down their own site so the consumers are directly affected because Sony took down PSN themselves. Not that I blame Sony, that was the correct course of action if they were compromised but the consumers are PSNless because of a decision Sony made...right or wrong.

I don't see what your point is...that is exactly what I was saying. In the end, we are inadvertently being affected by all of this.

...

Also, things aren't looking up too much for Sony...

PSN went down Tuesday the 18th
Portal 2 came out on Tuesday the 18th
PS3 version of Portal 2 has features related to Steam
Steam is known to crash allot

Coincidence? I think not. That's right, Gabe ate the PSN.

I just got the email from Sony about the whole fiasco, I sold my PS3 about 2 years ago I think so I wasn't too concerned. But it seems they have got username and password info but no one can get on psn to change their passwords which strikes me as a bit of a problem.

It may suck but they took it down while they try to sort things out and get it fixed (hopefully). I think they made the right call, I can wait to get my PSN back. Its not like we pay for the service but I fear these hackers may push sony to make it a pay service so they can aford staff to keep on top of issues like this.

I still wonder where my email from sony is though, if they were notifying us about the compromise. Does that mean my account was not on the same server as the one that was hacked, assuming they have a server cluster. I'm not all that computer savy to understand how that all works. I mostly know enough to break things really good. LOL

My point is that Sony brought down their own servers. A few weeks ago it was Anon but this time it was Sony. So all PSN users were directly affected by Sony's decision.

Now I do think Sony did the right thing but I think they should have beefed up their security after Anon brought it down a few weeks ago but instead they waited until the worst happened (stolen cc info) to bring it down.

I don't have a PS3 or anything but I fully support Sony's future secret police force. The thought of a bunch of guys in full SWAT gear smashing open some basement door and dragging a fat blindfolded hacker into a van amuses me for some reason.

Oh wow. Well, if that amuses you then I guess it should amuse me if you are falsely accused by this secret corporate police force. It doesn't amuse me though, the whole idea sickens me.

These fools wasting their lives hacking PSN and other networks over a load of nonsense deserve to get worked over by the legal system and their stuff confiscated as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, but not by corporate police. I mean corporate police is a really bad idea.

Getting worked over by the legal system doesn't imply any abuse though. I wouldn't support that, the police are already in the news for brutality alot these days...do you support police brutality?

So ya know, let's not suggest that the hackers be given cruel and unusual punishment just because you're angry. Please :-)

I'm so glad back in my console phase I only played XBox 360. Now I'm super glad I'm PC only, because when I get hacked I know it's due to my own ****.

Do you buy games online? Do you buy anything online?

If Steam got hacked would it be any different than this?  I guess I don't understand how giving a PC gaming company your CC info is any different than giving it to a console gaming company. Microsoft may get hacked next and then it could be Steam or EA. Ever buy any BioWare points?

I haven't got an e-mail yet either.  Either we aren't affected (other than PSN being down) or else it's taking them a while to send e-mails to 77 million people.

I agree.  This just as easily could happen to any online service.  They just chose PSN.

No I don't buy anything online, all my games are physical copies. Steam can go suck it.

In all seriousness, I feel sorry for all PSN users (to a degree) and wish misfortune upon the hackers. But my personal dislike for Sony tells me that they deserve this.

As for me being a PC gamer. Again if someone hacks me atleat I know it was due to my own ****** **** rather than other people's ****** ****.

The FBI is getting involved. These hackers barked up the wrong tree.

...But seriously Sony, I would be SO pissed if I gave you any CC info. Hell, I am pissed. They have been disgustingly non-communicative. No emails, lame blog posts, and enough wishy-washy answers to make a politician uncomfortable.

They had my cc info.  Ugh.  I am keeping a watch on my account though to make sure there's no fishy charges that pop up.  But, they did finally email today. I had already heard the news of course because they didn't notifiy their customers soon enough.

But I thought hackers only wanted to jailbreak the PS3 so that they could create home brew and run Linux on it.

I still haven't received any info. Perhaps it's because I do not have any real sensitive info (save for a deactivated credit card from some time ago)? I don't know. It's still grossly irresponsble on their part.

That's an assumption.

Most likely it's an indepent hacker/group of hackers who decided to raid PSN due to its goldmine of 77 million accounts, and the fact it hasn't been attacked in like 4-5 years.

I know.  It's just that a whole bunch of people who are upset seem to be blaming Sony even though Sony managed to keep their console unhackable for over 4 years, that is pretty unprecedented.
People should be angry at the Hackers Anonymous and Geohotz who opened this Pandora's box but instead most people are defending those vermin.
Even if their intentions were not malicious, they should've seen the consequences of releasing such information to a disreputable internet community.

I for one intend to give Geohot a beat down if I ever see him on the streets.

I highly doubt it's Anonymous, their secret weapon is DDOS which is trivial at best. Geohot I have no knowledge on and I doubt they did it.

Read on twitter feeds that some hackers have already made purchases on the credit card numbers they stole, up to 1000 dollars. Not cool. Hacking your own PS3 is one thing and while hacking PSN is a whole other ball field, actually using stolen information for personal gain? There's just no honour to be had in that at all. It's petty.

Stealing was always the intention of a good portion of the "pro-openness" crowd. Either from sony and game makers or us.
