What I have read is that:

- Credit card info was encrypted.
- The 3 digit security code was stored elsewhere reducing the effectiveness of stolen credit card numbers.
- User data was not encrypted.

So the biggest worry is identity theft. Still the encrypted data can be decrypted with time but without the security code....

There is not enough personal information to use for identity theft on it's own though the danger is from possible phishing scams used to extort the missing information. Hopefully nobody is that stupid.

The credit card numbers are missing expiry dates and security codes both of which are needed for online purchases. So unless you are dumb you are pretty much going to be fine.

1) People do fall for scams all the time. Yes, somebody....alot of somebody's get scammed.

2) Wow, missing exp dates and security codes. That would make the cc numbers impossible to use. The people who said their cards had already been used were probably lying. I dunno, we'll see what happens next.

I want to agree but I really don't know how quick this stuff can be hacked. If they were lying I'm sure the bank can easily figure that out in a simple investigation.

It could have been coincidence. They could be lying to try and make money out of Sony or a million other things. From what Sony said could have possibly been stolen is not enough to be able to use your credit card number nor could they reproduce a copy of your card and use it or use your online banking because they'd need your pin number for your personal card or online banking account. Plus online banking has a bunch of extra security. And many purchases have payment varification where you need to enter a secret word to verify the purchase.

They'd need to obtain more to take somebodies money after hacking the PSN.

Yea... I was skiming these posts and not thinking it through too well. I imagine if they just set up a program to randomly test pin numbers or security codes that would or should set off a flag for a bank or credit card company.

The secret word things I've only seen on acount creation stuff, what stores use it for checkouts? Or am I misunderstanding what your refering to? You do mean the random blurred letter an number thing right?

So the good news is that our credit card numbers are safe? I don't have to cancel it?

Well apparently the hackers are trying to sell the CC numbers now so they must have enough of the info to make the numbers usable.

He said the hackers are claiming the database
includes full names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses,
passwords, dates of birth, credit card numbers, CVV2s ["card
verification values," the three-digit security code used to confirm the
validity of the card in transactions where the card isn't present] and
expiration dates - in other words, pretty much everything.

All of this could simply be a rumor but here it is, you judge for yourself.

Didn't all of this start with Sony removing Linux from the PS3 in the first place? (Which triggered the Geohot ordeal, and then all this hacking?)

Yes and then Sony taking personal information (they did have a courts permission, shame on that court and Sony) from PayPal and I think YouTube, which is why anon got involved. If you donated to help Geohot fight a legal battle with Sony or if you watched his video on YouTube, Sony took your information. Sony has shown little regard for personal information both then and with their own database where some personal information wasn't even encrypted.

Sony did say the credit card data table was encrypted, so I'm not sure whether I'm convinced.

Well, they have had 11-12 days to decrypt it.

It actually has nothing to do with Geohot exactly though it may be loosely linked the guy said he has nothing to do with it and doesn't condone stealing peoples account details and only hacks to unlock systems to unleash their potential.

The hackers who pulled this likely usedthe situation to take advantage and use it as cover but it's likely that they were after other objectives than those people who took issue with Sony's handling of the unlocking situation.

It could all be a guy trying to scam people with fake numbers. Criminals try all sorts of scams and with it being a high profile case somebody could try to profit from it.

The actual hackers if they are doing it must be insane it's like jumping up and down in front of the FBI offices shouting "i did it! i did it!"

The whole "underground hacker website" made me giggle it's not very underground if this schmuck managed to get into it and read what they are doing lol

If any of you hackers are reading this, know you are in deep S@#! and I won't give up until you're brought to justice and rot in a dank cell for the rest of your miserable lives. You won't get away from this unscathed. The FBI are after you and will see justice done.

If even one hacker ends up getting caught and punished I will be satisfied.  Despite what hackers say about fighting for the rights of the online community, recent actions show that their only goal is to benefit themselves at the expense of others.
Stealing itself is bad, but stealing under the pretense of helping others is much much worse.

Oh please, get off your high horse. If it were up to Sony you would only be renting your PS3 and it wouldn't end there. Someone has to fight back before consumers have no rights at all.

Not all hackers are out to steal stuff. Some are helping consumers, what are you doing to help consumers?

I was perfectly fine with my PS3 and I never asked for or desired the help of any of these hackers.

Nobody is coerced into buying or using Sony's products or services so if they do something abhorrent, they will lose customers. Nobody needs to fight because if consumers were really upset with Sony, they'd stop buying their products.
I don't benefit in the slightest as a gamer in having Sony's PSN shut down and my credit card information potentially compromised.

Hackers always claim they're fighting back against unethical business practices but their actions show that their true motive is to pirate games, steal people's credit card info, and ruin the online experience for legitimate consumers by cheating.
Blaming Sony for "bringing it on themselves" is like blaming a rape victim for being too hot.  Civilized society doesn't work that way.

The whole linux thing is BS. My 50 dollar notebook computer can run Linux, there is no reason why anyone needs a PS3 for it and if they really didn't want to lose it they shouldn't have accepted the update.

The PSN isn't a charity afterall and buying the PS3 doesn't mean you own Sony's networks. It's their house, their rules.

What am I doing to help consumers?  Well unlike hackers I actually buy my games.  I'm a consumer and without consumers there would be no game industry in the first place.
A far cry above the parasites you act as an apologist for.

First of all, are you ok with <insert your car manufacturer> removing your AC after you have purchased the car? If they do force it on you by saying you either accept the "update" or you can no longer use the car on public roads (ie, you can't license it anymore). Would you be ok with simply never buying another <insert your car manufacturer)? I am going to bet not.

It is not ok for Sony to remove a feature after a product is sold. Let me give you an example of what would have been ok. In the original DS and DS Lite Nintendo gave you a GBA port, in the DSi and the DSi XL they removed that port. Why was that ok? That was ok because they didn't remove the port from DS and DS Lite's that people already bought. Had Nintendo released an update that was required, lest newer DS titles may not work  and online play would not work any longer, that removed the functionality of the GBA port....that would be wrong. That is what Sony did.

Second, it doesn't matter if you wanted Geohots help or not. If not, don't use Linux....see how easy that is. The problem is that you (and Sony) don't think anyone should be able to use it. Indeed some people bought the PS3 for Linux and some for PSN (free online play vs XBOX Live) and some for both. Removing either of those features AFTER a product is paid for is wrong. It's that same as the air conditioner or GBA port examples.

PSN is not down because of Geohot or Anon. It is down because some cyber criminals stole your CC info. It's like saying that Sony is to blame because your car has no air conditioner....LOL

So let's talk about unethical business practices. Do YOU think it was ok for Sony to query YouTube and PayPal for personal information about people who watched a video or donated to a legal battle against Sony? Do you see the conflict of interest here? What if a court had told Geohot that he was free to query Sony about their personal information, wouldn't that be absurd? Isn't it absurd both ways?

That you don't want to run Linux on a PS3 is irrelevent. Others might and the way I understand, the US Air Force was using the PS3 as supercomputer as well. Guess they are stupid as well? Maybe people without a Blu-Ray player bought a PS3 because it "it only does everything". Maybe people without a PC bought a PS3 because "it only does everything".

I never said that buying a PS3 meant you owned PSN. I said that you own the PS3 which is why it's ok to modify your PS3 as you see fit, like Geohot did. Here's the thing though, making people choose between Linix and PSN is wrong because Sony advertised that the PS3 could do BOTH. If you bought a PS3 after Linux was removed...so be it but if you bought one of the early models...you paid for BOTH and you should get BOTH. Maybe Sony should have offered a refund for those who no longer want their PS3 due to features being removed? BTW, Geohot didn't do anything to PSN, what he did was to the PS3...a PURCHASED (not rented) PS3.

Hackers =/= pirates. What makes you think that hackers don't buy games? Again, Geohot didn't crack the PS3 to pirate games, he did it to restore Linux.

Ya know what, do you know why the PS3 had remiained primarily unhacked until OtherOS was removed? It was because with OtherOS on there, there was no need to hack the system to run homebrew. Now look at the Wii and the 360. They don't offer a legal way to run homebrew so they were hacked. So it became true for the PS3 when OtherOS was removed. Homebrew, BTW, is not piracy (cause I know what's brewing in your head).

You're actually DEFENDING causing the crash of PSN and stealing the credit cards and personal information of 70 million people?! Obvious troll is extremely obvious. Say what you will, the FBI and Homeland Security are on you and WILL punish you to the extent of the law. As Cyber Sub-Zero says, "You are not so fearsome!"

Oh yes Garek, you are correct as two wrongs so obviously make a right...and you have the nerve to tell someone to get off a high horse, given I just had to fight a damn fraud charge on my account that I was able to track to an online source, a hacker bug, I've filled a civil suit on the bastard as he ****ed up MY bank account for ****ing friend finder.

And befoe I get jumped on, my own WIFE doesn't know my card number or account number, hell my card never even see's the light of day, and was only used for two online purchases in the last 2 years. Its clear that some how some little piece of crap on a lap top stole my information. And I agreed to filing charges as WRONG is WRONG. Yet a back door virus dispite using my card only at two sites, was stolen via trojan data, and not for some grand cause but for Friend Finder. Call it what you want but it is robbery.

You gonna run off get your buddies to hack me now? Its nothing short of being bullies, you traded the leather jackets, blue jeans, white T's, switchblades, and hair gel, for Notebooks, Numbers, PC's, Viruses, and carrying bags. If you all were so good, and doing whats right, heres an idea,

Why not help people like AVG and Macarfee, lock down and stop such lurking programs that hide in back doorways a scan doesn't find? Or hell attack the other hackers causing harm? Shut down the bot network, hack those "bad hackers". Or Idk anything remotely ****ing useful? Because a number of you are doing that **** and dress it up as "damage", or such. You make up this **** to feel better.

Why I admire groups like the mongols, Vikings, and even yes the Taliban, least when they raided, burned, raped, and stole, they openly state thats the idea. Its not like in various conflicts by modern armies, where it was "a mistake" or "wrong place wrong time" yeah a village can be in the wrong place wrong time.

You don't like Sony or are pissed they don't want to give you something that is theres to keep or give, fine. But don't act like you and yours are on some ****ing white horse crusade for humanity. Shame the devil and tell the truth, it always has, and always will be about those in your groups.

Hacking doesn't help consumers at all. All this self rightious defenders of the truth is bullcrap thought up by a bunch of people who believe in nothing and just want an excuse for their digital vandalism. They go around acting like they are Judge Dread like "i am the law!" telling people what to think and those who don;'t agree get harassed and hacked. It's like at protests when you get those groups who just show up to cause trouble.  Though all their talk that group has helped nobody with anything all they have done is made life difficult for consumers of products by taking down websites and services. Do not be fooled by the illusion that they are doing it for any reason other than to amuse themselves in acts of childish vandalism.

Personally i'd be happy if they all got thrown into a large pit so they can argue about who is right and get "lulz" all they want while the rest of us don't have to put up with them. Nobody would miss them just a lot less idiots in the world.

So you believe that when you buy a product it means you can do whatever you wish with it? Say you created a games console and people decided "hey i want to put this mod chip inside it it will make it better" it could be used to play pirate games but you have no proof they are using it for that. What do you do? Im sure you would act to protect your work which you put time and money into.

What if you created a painting and somebody bought it and then decided to deface that painting saying "it's mine i can do what i want with it since i bought it" would you not feel hurt that this person is defacing your art?  Buying a product doesn't always mean you should be able to do what you want with it.

If Sony doesn't want people using Linux on their consoles they have that right. It is their product. Sony doesn't tell you what to wear and how to style your hair. You choose that. Why can't they have the right to say what is used on their consoles?

Hackers like shortcuts. I can bet that the majority of them don't buy games. Maybe Geohot didn't crack it to pirate games but his methords can be used to pirate games plus he did something that isn't allowed in the licence agreement you sign when you purchase a PS3 hence it is illegal and a lawsuit followed.

They don't offer a legal way to run it because they don't want you to run it. That is their choice it is their product. You don't own the PS3 you own the right to use the PS3 just like when you buy a game it doesn't mean you own the game it doesn't belong to you and you have no legal rights to the game.

Not piracy but can be used for piracy and most likely would be by the very people fighting for the rights to use it.

I am probably older than you are. If you think it's ok for Sony to pull personal information because you made a donation or because you watched a video then we disagree. It's wrong when the cyber criminals break into Sony's servers and steal personal information and it's wrong when Sony uses high paid lawyers to convince a judge to let them do it too.

So you believe that when you buy a product it means you can do whatever you wish with it?

Yes, within the bounds of the law. You can modify a console to run homebrew, that's not illegal. You can modify a car to go 200 MPH too. If you go 200 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, that's illegal.

Say you created a games console and people decided "hey i want to put this mod chip inside it it will make it better" it could be used to play pirate games but you have no proof they are using it for that. What do you do? Im sure you would act to protect your work which you put time and money into.

Then you cannot take legal action against them. You cannot take legal action until a crime has been committed. Modifying your console is not a crime.

What if you created a painting and somebody bought it and then decided to deface that painting saying "it's mine i can do what i want with it since i bought it" would you not feel hurt that this person is defacing your art? Buying a product doesn't always mean you should be able to do what you want with it.

If I sold the painting, it is no longer mine. I have transferred ownership to the buyer. If they wish to deface it...legally there is nothing I can do about it.

If Sony doesn't want people using Linux on their consoles they have that right. It is their product. Sony doesn't tell you what to wear and how to style your hair. You choose that. Why can't they have the right to say what is used on their consoles?

First, Sony DID want people running Linux on the PS3. So once people bought it, it is legally questionable to take that feature away.

Second, No one can run Linux on PS3's that Sony owns and that's because those PS3's are sitting in a warehouse. Once sold, those PS3's belong to the buyer.

Look, maybe you think it's cool for Sony to change the rules and make your PURCHASE into a rental but I don't .

Here's how a purchase works: You take it to the counter, you pay for it and there is no return date. You even get to open the box yourself.

Here's how a rental works: You take it to the counter, you pay for it and there IS a return date and don't get to open the box yourself.

So, do you still think the PS3 is a rental?

Hackers like shortcuts. I can bet that the majority of them don't buy games. Maybe Geohot didn't crack it to pirate games but his methords can be used to pirate games plus he did something that isn't allowed in the licence agreement you sign when you purchase a PS3 hence it is illegal and a lawsuit followed.

I should ask your age if you think "not allowed in the EULA" = illegal.

The EULA is not legally binding UNTIL it is taken to court and tested, There was a case where a EULA was found to be legally binding but it only applied to the one case. There were other cases where it was not found to be legally binding. In other words, an EULA is not legally binding until it is tested in court. This one hasn't been. They had their chance to test it with the Geohot case....they chose not to pursue it. Wonder why? I think they were concerned they could lose and set an unfavorable (to them) precedent.

If "Your soul belongs to Sony if you bought this console" was put into the EULA, would that be legally binding just because it's in an EULA?

There is no such thing as a Point of Sale contract that doesn't require a signature. Did you sign anything when you bought a PS3, Wii or 360?

As for "Geohots method could be used to pirate". Ok shall we blame Nicholas Cugnot (he created the first car) for murders using cars? Shall we blame knife makers for those who use knives to murder? Shall we....need I go on?

They don't offer a legal way to run it because they don't want you to run it. That is their choice it is their product. You don't own the PS3 you own the right to use the PS3 just like when you buy a game it doesn't mean you own the game it doesn't belong to you and you have no legal rights to the game.

They don't want you to buy third party accessories either but they can't stop you. Yes, you DO own your PS3. That's how it works when you BUY something.

Imagine this, what if you bought an HP computer with Windows 7 and Microsoft (or HP) told you that you were not allowed to install certain programs on it or they told you that you couldn't install Linux? Would you be ok with that?

When you buy a game you own the disc and right to play that game. A right that cannot be taken from you. Remember the ****storm when EA denied access to that guys games because he was forum banned? Yeah...you buy them for permanent use and you can modify them (offline) if you wish. Wanna use a trainer? You can do that, it's your game. You don't have free rein on their servers but off the servers....

Remember the ****storm when Blizzard was banning people for using a trainer in single player? See, corporations will trample all over your rights...if you let them.

Not piracy but can be used for piracy and most likely would be by the very people fighting for the rights to use it.

So PC's should be banned since they are capable of piracy? It's the act of piracy that is illegal, not the machine nor methods that may enable it.

Ya know what's funny. It wasn't so long ago that Sony was fighting to justify it's production of dual cassette recorders and cd burners. Don't those enable piracy? See, even Sony agrees...enabling piracy does not mean you are encouraging, condoning or participating in piracy.

I cba to quote that wall of text so i will just answer the main points you put to me.

Firstly. When did i say the PS3 was a rental? You are putting words in my mouth. What i said was that purchasing a PS3 doesn't mean you own it. You have no rights to it. If you had the rights you could create your own versions of it and sell them at will. Because you legally own the rights to it. Rights of use mean you own the right to use the product but not to change it or make copies of it or sell those copies or whatever else,

So what you are saying is that you are happy to sign a licence agreement and then take it to court when it doesn't let you do what you want. Kind of destroys the point of it doesn't it? So if you signed a buisiness contract with somebody which they agreed to your terms of use for your product and then they decided "I don't like your rules anymore so i will break them" would you not take them to court for breach of contract?

People will always cry out against Sony but if the shoe was on the other foot you'd be the first to drag a person to court and sue them for all they are worth.

The rest if the stuff is an argument about PC's which is completely invalid and so i can't argue against an invalid argument. A PC is not a product owned by a company in the same way a PS3 is. Any schmuck can go out and buy individual parts owned by various companies and put them together to make a PC. No one of these companies owns the product they just own the parts so it provides a freedom to install what you wish on it.

A PS3 is a product Sony paid for the rights to all the parts in it and it becomes their product so they have the choice on what is installed on their own product.

PC and PS3 are completely different cases. Invalid argument.

Oh and the EA ban case. Served him right. Little trolls are always the first to cry and act like they were wronged when they get banned for breaking the rules. You can't go around doing what you want when you want. I know some groups like to think so and they like to play things both ways. Make other peoples lives miserable being abusive against others and when they get in trouble for it they cry and act like they are being oppressed. If you can't do the time don't do the crime.

CD burners have a use outside of piracy. What use does unlocking a PS3 have except to put a bunch of illegal software and custom firmware on it? Enabling piracy just because a bunch of kids want to feel cool by hacking a PS3 and manipulating them isn't a good reason.
