So, this is my third playthrough, and rogue is the only class I haven't used yet...

I've just started my third serious playthrough, the first one being with a mage (arcane knight/spirit healer) and the second one with a warrior (berserker/champion). During my first two playthroughs, I went the "good way", since during my first one I made some slip ups, so I plan on going the "evil way" in this one.
Since I've never used a rogue, I decided to go ahead and create an elf rogue, and decided to use a new party build I hadn't used yet (Offencive Shale, dog, not spirit-healer morigan). Thing is: I've gotten to the tower of Ishall, started having some problems, and then I realized the only way to play as a rogue efectively was by going after the enemies distracted by my tank... which is something mages do better anyway, and the only reason I had a rogue in my party at all times anyway was becase of the treasure chests. Basically, this is starting to make me want to play another game as a mage with another build... since mages are versatile, I should be able to play it without it getting too repetitive, but I'm not completely sure of that... Also, it's possible I'm just doing it wrong with the rogue.
Can anyone give me a sugestion on the matter?
Thanks in advance.

Rogues do awesome damage, in addition to the scouting, lock picking, trap disarming, etc.

Focus on dexterity and cunning, use dual daggers, get coup de grace+momentum and keep an eye out for paralyze runes, and you'll see enemy health bars fall quickly.

Rogues are not tanks (unless built for the role), and are supposed to attack the enemy from behind once they are focused on the tank, which gives them the ability to backstab. Backstabs are similar to critical hits, and with a rogue attacking from behind with momentum, they can really pile on the damage.

I've had the most fun with Origins as a rogue. Things may seem tough prior to Lothering, but the same can be said of every class that doesn't have heal spells. Just give it time and your rogue will become a beast on the battlefield.

Also, get stealth maxed a.s.a.p. so your rogue can disarm traps without coming under fire from nearby enemies, and so they don't go after the rogue, who will be the first target they see, assuming that you are controlling your warden while walking around in dungeons. Set the tank to aggressive behavior, and have your rogue follow them into battle.

If you do make a rogue get momentum the first thing, it is one of the best talents in game, increases your dps by so much, and really isnt that hard to get. Also, dual daggers is i think the best way to go, fastest attack speed and i think highest dps. Rogues are much less squishy than mages too, a dex rogue can have upwards of 160 def, making them excellent offtanks.

A rogue as a main is a blast and very very effective. The only complete playthrough I've done is with a Dual-Dagger Rogue. I've started a game as a mage and warrior of different flavors, then tried an archer. Not having nearly as much fun.

This was a typical fight for me (for the team of usual suspects that I assembled):

1. Stealth, and scout ahead to asses your enemies. Love it.
2. Position your team. I would usually hide Alistair and Morrigan behind doorways. Main rogue would sneak and take position behind a mage if there was one.
3. Draw with archer Leliana. As soon as the fighting starts, my main rogue uses all her tricks to cut the mage into mince meat in seconds. Poor sap never had a chance to cast anything.
4. When the enemies come through the door Morrigan and Alistair pounce.
5. While Alistair holds aggro, Main Rogue is alternating between killing Alistair's target to take out targets as quick as possible, and using various stun talents to take various other enemies out of commission to weaken their overall effectiveness.
6. She could also serve as emergency tank if Leliana or Morrigan were in trouble, but Alistair was way too occupied.

You can't be direct with a Rogue. You have to be sneaky ... dirty. You don't want a fair fight where you go head-to-head with an enemy. They should be distracted by something else, or maybe not even see you coming before you turn their whole world upside down.
