My ideal ME3 would include all of them and omit Tali. Couldn't stand her in ME2 even though she was my little sister in ME1.

It'd be tough for any character, even Garrus, to out point the combined popularity of two others, especially when he's usually second in popularity to Tali. I expect him to rate very highly, but he is at a disadvantage for the reason that Aris Ravenstar pointed out. You're getting two votes for the price of one with Ashley/Kaidan. I understand the combining of the two for the purpose of the poll and that's cool by me, but if you're going strictly for specific squadmate popularity they would have to be seperate for an accurate reading. 

Honestly I didn't think they would do so well, I really wasn't a fan of either, especially Ash. I'm pretty surprised that Kaiden just got his first solo vote though while Ash had like 6. I literally never used either one, and on Vimire I close my eyes and click. I'm actually almost upset that they make a return; as much as I didn't care for Jacob and Miranda, I didn't care for them less than those 2. Besides, Jacob brought some much needed Bro-ness.

1.  Garrus is not at any disadvantage as he has multiple fanbases voting for him. 
2.  Samara/Morinth make sence as one vote for exact same reason as VS
3.  My vote would have been for Kaidan alone if I were forced to chose, since as much as I like Ash as a character, I pretty much never use her when I play  ME1 - its usualy Kaidan and Garrus or more recently Kaidan and Liara (with all the lifts, Liara's singularity and in case of biotic shepards - my lift and singularity, things never have a chance to shoot at me... ever.  Saren with Kaidan, Liara and biotic shepard is a sad joke.).
4.  there were multiple votes for Kaidan only, before the change to the poll.  note the edited posts. 
5.  they are great characters that people tend to brush off/judge harsher, sadly becasue they are human and you get all these aliens so early in a game - ooh, fresh new game, fresh new weird squadmates, why play with boring humans you see on the streets every day, when you can play with exotic aliens?  case in point - the post right above mine, that I didn't even see before finishing typing this up.  Horizon didn't help their case either, especialy with people who never played ME1.

what makes me sad is that Jacob is not getting more votes.  he's a lot more misunderstood then VS

If the purpose of the poll is to find out which individual character is most sought after as a squadmate in ME3, regardless of variables, you would make them seperate for accuracy sake. It was simply an observation. But like I said, it doesn't matter to me so the point is moot. 

Why indeed - that would be my post you're referring to on number 5. I find Ashley and Kaidan to be less than satisfacotry as characters for different reasons. I wouldn't relate to either of them in real life so it's no surprise that I don't find them very engaging in a video game and would be happy never to make their acquaintance again. 

I am very fond of Jacob however, and if I had to have a human squadmate it would be him, but I don't and I won't. It's not like I can go to the nearest coffee shop and hang out with turians in every day life. I find the prospect of intelligent life out in the Universe very alluring so if this is the closest I can get, so be it. I will hang out with aliens in Mass Effect to satisfy my curiosity of the unknown.
