There seems to be better equipment in Awakening, but I'm still unsure what shield I should use for my sword and shield warrior. Is the Fade wall still the best shield?

Try the landsmeet shield, which can be looted from one of the two dragons at the end of the Silverite Mines. Another option is the heartwood shield, if you had Wade craft that, though I usually prefer the bow.
