I guess I've grown out of my girl on girl phase. I like playing as Male Hawke. Heck I don't even change the appearance (lets face it character generation hasn't been a strong point in DA games so far...). I like the FemHawke VA, started a run with romancing Isabella in mind. But then I realized playing an Archer was boring and I missed Varric.

I find lesbian and gay pairings more interesting than heterosexual ones.  Hetero is everywhere so when you get the rare chance for s/s pairings, I jump at that opportunity.

I find f/f and f/m pairings more interesting than m/m. I need a woman involved, preferably a super fantastically awesome one. Men are everywhere, and I presonally hate the idea of shunting a strong woman aside so a dude can play hero again because two dudes together is squeeworthy and hot.

As for Isabela, she appeals to me on that super fantasically awesome level because she's also pretty ****ing pro-woman, and not just in a "nice to look at and screw" kind of way. She's supportive of her fellow ladies and, as a woman who appreciates such things, that's immensely appealing.

That's what I'd be doing, since I don't actually care much for male Hawke OR male Wardens. Except for Ron, but he was with Morrigan so she fills the Awesome Chick quota. Literally the only reason I could think of to play a male Hawke is to be a dude with another dude and...I'd rather be a Lady Hawke or Lady Warden with a dude or lady because a well written female protagonist, when practically everything else is equal, is way more novel and appealing to me than mansex.

I'm absolutely not opposed to m/m or anyone who prefers to play a male character who is gay, but I just can't make myself abandon what it is appreciate most about these games to do it.

I'll probably never play MaleShep past Horizon because he's not my cup of tea nor does he have any s/s romance options. I don't find m/m hot since I'm a lesbian but I like the dynamic of a gay hero. F/m pairings aren't my cup of tea either because I tire of the boy wins girl deal.

Not a fan of f/m pairings. Just bored of it I guess. Look at television and books the majority of it is het. Yes there is some lesbian/gay stuff on tv but not a lot. There are more lesbian, gay, bi, trans books than anything else. Still, boy see's girl, boy likes girl, boy dates girl, boy gets girl. Same old tired storyline.

As for m/m, I'm all for it for the gay/bi male gamers. Not something I like playing personally.

As for why Female Hawke and Isabela? Because I like them together, they are hot together and frankly they look good together.

I'm a guy who has ended up enjoying my female characters far more than male characters in DA. My first run through with DA2 was with femHawke who romanced Isabela, and I was surprised and pleased at how complex it was. Depending on how you play, it can be quite layered. For example, my femHawke is sweet, but quite diplomatic and serious. She's influenced Isabela to become a better person, but in turn Isabela has also shown her how to loosen up and just have fun with life. All the companions can't quite figure out how they make it work, but it's because they fill each other out.

That being said, it's also a bonus that femHawke's VA is fantastic and works so well with Isabela's VA.

If the banter is to be believed, this happens quite often.

If I want to play as a dude, I'll fire up every other game ever made.  20+ years of gaming has made me stubborn and petty, to the point where I have trouble playing a male when I have the option to play a female.

And well, I just love kick ass women. Especially kick ass women who love other kick ass women. Which is why Lady Hawke/Izzy is fast becoming one of my favorites.

I completely understand why some are tired of het pairings, but within the context of a female hero universe, I prefer to look at it as the girl wins the boy, and not the other way around.  Small technicality, of course, but at least it's a slightly different spin.

And while I’m 100% supportive of m/m options, personally speaking, I’ll take the clam bake over the sausage fest.

THIS!

Honestly, I have no problem playing as a male in all the games where I've been forced to play as one, but anytime I have the option to play as a female, I will ALWAYS choose it. It's what I am and it's what I want to play as.

And Lady Hawke plus Isabela is HAWT.

I bet it's really more than six. Isabela was forgetting a few.

So far I've only managed one het romance (female Hawke and Fenris) but, somehow, the m/m and f/f relationships just ended up seeming more *right* in my playthroughs. Funny, since in Origins I never managed a f!Leliana relationship and tended to just court Alistair with my varous lady wardens. Not complaining here though - love having the option to go with whomever, regardless of gender (though my heart is crying for Aveline... my dearest love).

As for F!Hawke and Isabella, it was a love match made in heaven for my kickass asian mage :P...

And they lived happily ever after. On a boat. Far far away :D

What's not to love? They just looked right for each other.

Love the images. Though your hawke doesn't look very asian but still she does look very nice. *smiles*

lol... maybe not. Asian in my mind :P

Thanks though. I had a ball playing her. The only Hawke I've ever made who just never looked derpy every time an out-of-norm facial expression was pulled! lol

On kink meme there are 1193 het stories, 530 slash stories, and 101 femslash stories.

The majority of fanfiction is written by straight women and reflects their interests!

Wouldn't it make more sense to divide the het stories into those that feature male Warden/Hawke and female Warden/Hawke?

EDIT: Well, actually, now that I think about it not everything on the kmeme involves those...back to the drawing board.

When the question is 'what type of paring is popular in fanfiction?' I'm not sure whether the extra information is relevant. I can tell you that Fem!Warden/Alistiar, Lady Hawke/Anders, and Lady Hawke/Fenris make up the bulk of those heterosexual stories.

Hetero: 1193

Lady Hawke: 226
Dude Hawke: 24
Fem Warden: 88
Dude Warden: 3

Edit: That seems wrong...

Oh, I know! In the past, some of the taggers on the kmeme only tagged slash and femslash. Nice bit of heteronormativity there.

So... if my math is correct, this means there are roughly 341 hetero fics featuring Hawke or Warden... are the other 852 fics minionshipping or something?
