Does the game invite this type of play or does paying for slightly upgraded weapons backfire because you get the good stuff in treasure finds?

In my case I have a low level mage new to Ostagar and if I clean my pack out I can buy a slightly better staff.
In BG and BG2 I always found it better to drain your wallet and upgrade at every opportunity, but these games don't give you much armor and goods to sell off opponents of your own level, and the gold is not plentiful.

Better to be patient or well armed and poor?

Depends on what you prefer. I always hoped to get better items from the loot rather than from the shops.
