Hoping that we get to meet up with Thane on his death bed on the Hanar homeworld in ME3. Kolyat should only be there if you successfully did his loyalty mission and he certainly shouldn't be a squad mate.

Thane said he had a year left before the illness incapacitates him, not before he dies.

So I think Thane will be in ME3, whether he is cured or dies mid-game or in a epilogue is another matter. But he will be there.

This.

Not to mention his LotSB dossier says :

1.  Thane is a viable transplant candidate, but has refused to be added to the list

2.  Thane benefits greatly from physcial exercise and social interaction

3.  Thane's left lung is the worst, his right lung shows only nodular lesions

And in addition to all that.

Kolyat, really?  [insert Oh-Look-It's-This-****-Again image]

I don't know why it would be a surprise if he did.

No. His son just shot a guy, that's not exactly the sort of preparation it takes to fight against the reapers.

I don't think Thane is dead.
In Lotsb there is an entry in garrus' dossier saying he sent some tissue sample to some scientist that will be doing clinical trials on Thane's disease. I'm thinking that will pay off.

Was that about Thane? I thought it was about Garrus' mother.

Ah,  you're right, I mixed up the diseases
Sorry about that

wait, what? is this confirmed? it would be ridiculous if he didn't die, but he has to die on screen. I was thinking he would decide to go out in flames, and (since he has always been my favorite companion) i was hoping to have a last mission, where he is a temporary companion, and he can sacrifice himself to somehow destroy a reaper or hold back waves of husks or something as we evacuate kahje... PLEASE BIOWARE, PLEASE, I WILL GIVE YOU MY FAMILY, AND ALL MY MONEY, AND ALL OF THEIR MONEY :'(

Thane not dying, especially if romanced, would be one of the supreme carry-over annoyances for me, likely surpassed only by a Paragon clean-sweep in terms of alliances against the Reapers and post-Reaper galaxy. The brevity of Thane's future was only one of the defining character traits and themes of the romance going in.

I expect if your FemShep romanced him he has left a video message for you or something.

He already left a letter you can read in the Shadow Broker base.

Silly kids. I have a copy of GI in my hot little hands, and it says that ME3 picks up a few months after the suicide mission. So unless you got Thane killed already, he's gonna be totally not dead in ME3.

I hope Thane goes out in a blaze of glory, or on his deathbed in a very moving scene. Curing him would sort of cheapen his character methinks, but it's possibly for Bioware to pull it off nicely and believably.

And Kolyat is a cowardly moron who barely knows how to shoot a gun. People should consider that before picking him as the obvious Thane replacement.

What wouldn't be as bad is a mission to, whilst not saving Thane, who needs to go out in flames in an epic battle with Kai Leng, finding a way to cure or lessen the effects of Keplars Syndrome, or find and deliver some sort of vaccine for it, with Mordin's help, so that it doesn't effect any more drell. Only available if Thane survived ME2, though.

Oh, and please god don't replace him with Kolyat or Feron. Kolyat is just pathetic (although I would be OK if Thane asks Shepard to watch over Kolyat after he dies) and Feron should stay in a mental hospital for a while.

He already has, as early as LOTSB:

Intercepted Correspondence Saved to Personal Drive

Siha,

I write this with a heavy hand, knowing you will read this letter when I am no longer able to share my thoughts. I am dying, Siha. Perhaps because of the differences between our species, I can hope that time will treat you with kindness and dim the hurt of my passing to faded recollections that a drell would forever remember with perfect clarity.

Selfishly, however, I could not leave this world without leaving a piece of me behind that would never fade.

I once accepted my fate. Nothing remained but a shell destined to die. I only had to choose the when and how of my passing. I had refused to be confined to a bed, gasping horribly as my life beeped away to machinery I had no use for. I thought of my Irikah, broken, bloodied, and betrayed by my absence. Of Kolyat, small and afraid, bravely pushing at his eyes to stem the flow of tears I had entrusted to him to cry... for both our sakes.

The expectation to move swiftly to my end vanished upon uniting with your cause. You awoke me, Shepard. My heart quickened its sluggish beat if only to remain at your side and protect you with everything that I am. I was content to simply watch, take the time left given and praise all I know for allowing me to walk my final days with hope and certainty that I am worthy of more than my cold isolation, solely because you believed.

I love you. If all else whispers back into the tide, know this for fact. By grace given me by the Goddess Arashu, I bid her divine protection to you, my warrior-angel, my Siha, to succeed in your destiny. To light your path through the coming darkness. To give you hope, when all seems lost.

I will await you across the sea.

Thane

- Source

I personally got this the first time I played through LOTSB.

But since Drell have perfect memory and he believes in an afterlife and all that...
Kinda makes me sad, picturing Irikah. She waits for him, near the shoreline. She watches him, body and mind detached. Killing, murdering. For years he is like this, until finally he puts himself back together, but the reason for that? He fell in love with Shepard. And for all this time she's been waiting for him, he arrives. But he, he is waiting for another.

That's just BioWare's Carth Syndrome at work, if you ask me. It doesn't stop Thane's romance from being one of the best I've experienced in the trilogy so far, however.

Why does everyone always think Kolyat should take his place? Feron is the obvious choice to replace him

this. Also IF he is dead then I'm glad he's gone. Don't get me wrong I liked the guy, but sometimes people die and there's nothing you can do but accept whats happened. Good story telling imo.
