I just booted up Dragon Age 2 on my Macbook pro for the first time since release week, hoping for a second playthrough. I patched it all up, installed new DLC, etc. Only, I can barely get into the game or run it at all. It ran perfectly smooth back in March, but suddenly I'm crashing at the loading screen between Varric's cutscene and the Character Editor at the beginning. Cutscenes work fine, opening combat works fine, but once it hits the load screen my computer is overheating and I have to perform a hard restart.

I've got plenty of space on the drive, exceed all the requirements, and haven't had a problem with it until tonight. Any ideas to try and get it working again?

Try to reinstall it again. Maybe some bug has been created in the installing progress
