Help!!!   I want to use Garrius more as he welds a wide assortment of abilties and pack both assult weapons and sniper rifles but it seems i use more med-gel on him than any other squadie.  So can anybody give me advice to keep Garrius on his feet and firing?

Garrus is pretty fragile. There are a few ways to keep him alive in my experience.

The first is to actually order him around, behind cover, etctera. Ordering suadmates generally helps their survivability.

The second is to equip him with weapons that don't have massive ammo clips, since this generally means he'll duck into cover more (when the clip runs out). I tend to keep him with the Mantis, for example and keep him back so he snipes stuff with his Tungsten Ammo.

These are things that have worked for me, but I have yet to play on Insanity (soon, though), so more experienced players might be able to help more.

You need to pay attention to where you position him and sometimes move him around as the field of battle changes (though, in typical Garrus fashion, he will ignore orders on occassion). Just don't put him on the front lines, he's a sniper not a vanguard.

Who are you using for your third slot? I'd probably bring a biotic (especially if you are on insanity, warp is super helpful). Also, remember you can use the "position" commands (Q and E by default) to force your squad-mates to target certain enemies. Let him focus on easier stuff while you keep harder mobs busy (or vice-versa, whichever style works best for you).

And don't waste your medi-gel, try to only use it if both squad-mates are down.

Its gets easier as you and your squad-mates level up. For the third slot I usually use Mordin (on Insanity) for his crowd-control stuff or Tali (team dextro is awesome, though this is more for RP reasons) or Miranda/some other biotic if I am not playing vanguard/adept.

Personally, for one playthrough (the first one), I mostly used the Jack - Garrus combination.
If you order the latter back in cover with a steady rifle, and use the former's shockwave to temporarly take out enemies, you won't have much problem. It involves some order issuing, but that system is smooth (if a bit overly simplified) enough in the game, so it's no trouble.

and I will recommend Miranda as a second squad member because her unique upgrades increases your squads health and firing power so she is a really useful squad member

Jack's Shockwave is invaluable on Insanity when playing the squisher classes. And she has a great cooldown and 20% Biotic damage upgrade

That's correct, but I was (and am) assuming that OP plays on Normal or Veteran as these two are the most used difficulties.
Coming to think of it however, Normal doesn't even need tactics apart from a handful of boss battles.

It's pretty simple rule and works with any squadmates.

As long as you (Shepard) are closer to the enemies than your squad, squadmates will rarely die.

Just be aggressive and you'll be rewarded. No tactics besides that are needed, although it is good to keep your squadmates out of your line of sight..that way, their powers will be instant, with no animation delay. This may or may not be crucial, depending on your playstyle.

edit: typos

yeah you are right and to be fair most the time im the one doing the attacking my squad tends to cover me and watch my back which tends to work for me but you have to make sure your squad matches how you play the game its pointless having players that do not suit how you play. (garrus is thankfully very adaptable you can use him for many situations)
whereas Tali is one that you can only really use against Geth and mechs her abilities are not often that useful in other situations, which the same in a way can be said for Legion but he has better weapons so he can cause more damage than Tali

i have him use his sniper rifle or the vindicator. he seems to take cover more often that way.

i too noticed he dies alot, but thats probably because he's my most consistently used squadie

Keep him back and try to draw more fire yourself. There's only so much you can do.
In ME1, Garrus is by far the most fragile squadmate. In ME2, he seems to keep this trend despite the fact that he isn't the worst defensive squadmate.

I just consider it an aspect of the character at this point: Garrus is squishy.

On Hardcore and above, Tali's a freaking god thanks to her LM power Energy Drain and the fact that nearly all enemies have shields - give her a Geth Plasma Shotgun and she'll last longer than even Garrus with a Vindicator and Incisor sniper rifle.

Micromanagement is key. As a rule, keep squadmates behind you, and they will survive.

The only squadmate that can go in front is Grunt, and even with him I find there are a lot of times he's better off behind me. Everyone else needs to stay either behind Shep, or at most beside him/her to be properly effective.
