I honestly don't see how one can strategize combat when enemies appear from nowhere,

And yet plenty of us manage it nonetheless. It's all about anticipating where enemies are likely to come from, it's rarely as random as some of you make it out to be. It's also about having the abilities and positioning to adapt to new situations. Don't split the party unless the fringe members can take care of themselves or return to the group or one of the other characters can protect them. Just accept that there is no "safe" location on the map, and build your strategies to take that into account. All members of your party are active participants in the battle.

No.

Because it is silly. Add to it the other collection of interesting gameplay developments and it feels like the putty / puddy / puny patrol from power rangers.

Well, let's see. Having enemies drop from the sky destroys immersion. It makes DA2 into an old-school arcade game at the higher levels...

Well, I wiped here last time, so I know that the assassin will spawn in *this* corner. Wait for him!

But it's really just lazy, sloppy work. They could go to a bit more effort and have enemies run in through an open door; it could even be a *secret* door if you want to mix things up. But having fixed spawns is simply a cost-saving measure. And it gives us the choice of "serial killer" mode on normal and mind-numbing tedium on higher difficulty levels.

Put another way: why is this - predictable, immersion-breaking, arcade-style tool - a *good idea?

Read number 4

This is how spawning enemies should be handled. It makes sense and it's not like they are appearng out of thing air.

"Brute force will only get you so far – You’ll need specific tools to truly defeat specific monsters and quests. Nekker (tunneling zombie-goblin thingies) can be relatively easily dispatched with a sword, but they’ll keep on spawning from nests unless you find the right ingredients to construct the right bombs to finally close off those ‘orrible portals to the undergound. Giant spiders, meanwhile, will keep showing up in droves unless you find a way to lure out and murder their queens. That’s not an easy fight, but a slew of other traps (explosive, snappy, flamey, stunny) might just keep you alive if you have chance to set ‘em up before the big brute scuttles your way…"

No we can't. They do not belong in a RPG.

I really love when they jump off the four story building in plate armor and I can just watch them go splat then pick them off with my murder knife as they lay moaning and bleeding. Makes it so much easier.

*cough*

The way I see it, is that Varric is telling the story. So he would tell something like: 'And just as we thought we almost had them all, 6 more just showed up.'
That's also why the fighting is flashy instead of practical, because we all know how Varric likes to embellish things a bit.

This the new excuse for lazy design and short development time now?

In the end if the game was a masterpeice something truly epic as far as story and gameplay mechanics then people wouldn't have to try so hard to justify things in first place in it's defence. The fact they do means it failed to get across the story and gameplay in an adequate manner imho as well as it's many flaws which they feel they have to defend day in day out. Basically the end result is a flawed and badly done product to need such a defence.

If the game weren't truly epic as far as story and gameplay mechanics then people wouldn't bother to defend it. Honestly, it's not a perfect game, but it's far more good than bad, and better than 90% of the games out there even for all its faults.

I'm still trying to figure out how they can do back flips in full plate armor.

As a Larper, lemme tell you: It shouldn't be possible for Loghain to get up once you knock him off his feet during the Landsmeet duel. Heavy plate armor is that heavy. But DA was never big on realism.

This.

Mind you, the ninjas materializing out of thin air does bother me a bit. But it's not because it makes the game less realistic, it's simply because it annoys me.

Do.. you.. throw.. tennis balls.. and.. yell.. "lightning bolt!" *ducks*

But in medeivil times, people wore heavy armor from an early age and were generally stronger than most people today.

So it makes sense ya can get up after a few smacks. Plus fear for your life adds a boost too. ;)

Armored knight easily recovers from fall off a horse

Yeah not that hard for someone as well trained as Loghain.

Agree with OP, and the guys at BioWare like waves of enemies so it's not likely to change.

(husband)

It's not just that but some abilities like Death Syphon actually are only useful in large protracted combats.   And of course it add variety to the game.  ( Instead of surviving a nasty boss encounter or ambush its a war of attrition).

I don't know about society being stronger in general as only the upper elements of society could afford the cost of full plate armour and they were trained to wear it and fight from childhood. Men like logahin are hardened soldiers not weekend warriors.

"Oh the Orlesians have invaded! Sorry I have to go and milk the cows this week, I'll turn up on Saturday"

Larping proves nothing, one is always going to have limited training and no combat experience, as most people work in an office most of the week.

The phrase that pops into mind is, "... then out of nowhere....". Good catch! Image IPB
