I just read this article:

www.destructoid.com/portal-2-dragon-age-2-and-dirty-filthy-lies-199456.phtml

There are spoilers for Portal 2 and Dragon Age 2 in the article, but they concern the two times in the game where the player's character (Varric's exaggerated Hawke, and Varric's exaggerated Varric) are uber-powerful.

I think my stance on this is similar to my stance on sarcasm in forum posts: unless it's blatantly obvious, some people are going to take it for something else and be insulted.

As for these dirty filthy lies, as the article's author calls them, in Portal 2 it's blatantly obvious within a few seconds.  In Dragon Age 2 (and especially for some of those who played the demo and decided not to buy), it's not.  In either case it works if the player can, in very short order, come to the conclusion "I see what you did there."

Interesting enough article. Although I found it odd the author stated that Varric "performed modestly to poorly in battle." He was clearly powered up in the exaggerated scene but after three playthroughs I've always found Varric to be my most dependable companion in combat.

I suppose some people will have problems with this sort of thing, they're used to games giving them the whole truth. It doesn't bother me though, because I've seen enough films that used such techniques and enjoyed them, so I find games which do it enjoyable as well.
