Having played all three classes, I can say that I understand why people think Mages aren't good; they take far more work and intuition on the part of the player than a Warrior, and even a Rogue (though to a lesser extent). The burden of failure falls squarely on the shoulders of the player, and if you don't perform or control the battle as you should, things will end badly. With this in mind, I wrote a Mage guide, and created a Mage tutorial video. Though I'm using Force/Elemental/Primal talents, the knowledge within applies to the class as a whole.
Videos are by myself and brazen_nl, to help you take your mage game to the next level!

I am playing through the missions/encounters people seem to have the most trouble with. I go through, pausing and providing information on what I'm doing and why, so you can learn ways to turn hard fights into massacres, and conquer things you previously struggled with.
Video 1 clips are from:
Wayward Son (Docks portion)
Tranquility
The Meeran fight in Lowtown
Bait and Switch (Alienage portion)
Video 2 clips are from:
Blackpowder Courtesy
Act of Mercy (Decimus fight)
Act of Mercy (Templar fight)
Shepherding Wolves
Take the video, post it, share it, let people know that Mages in DA2 are incredibly powerful, but only if you use them properly. Help everyone else to stop complaining about the class, and start kicking ass with it! If you find yourself having fun, I've written a guide, which you can reach from the link in my signature. Feel free to ask questions if you need help, or don't understand something.
Hope you enjoy and learn a few things!
