Don't get me wrong, I'm obsessed with the game and everything it's about.  The game is absolutely amazing.

I have a few complaints, but my main is how companions join with their points allocated.

I don't like the idea that you're limited to You/Alistair/Shale as your tanks as well as You/Morrigan/Wynne as your healers.  The healer bit isn't so bad, after all adding more mages to the group would degrade their individuality.  But I went two handed spec out of the idea that it would be more interactive then a shield specialized Warrior.  But that limited me to Alistair and Shale as my tanks.

If I utilized Sten or my favorite Sodding companion, I'd be rolling around with a Warrior/Warrior/Warrior/Mage comp.  Which I did for my first play through and found it ridiculous frustraiting.  The thought of group composition making a heavy impact on tactics is great, but the point of chosing your companions was to evolve your story with the flavors of your chosen side personalities.  Or at least I thought.

Nothing too important, I just was wondering if anyone else shared this annoyance.  It'd be an easy fix to have a member join and have their points decided by the player.

Well, if you think about it, Alistair/Shale/Sten/You can be tanks...dunno if yer Dog makes a good tank, Dog/Shale/Sten/Zevran/Leliana/You can be melee DPS, Shale/Leliana/Morrigan/Wynne/You can be ranged DPS, Wynne/You/Morrigan can be healers but doesn't say ya can't drink potions like a fish unless yer down. A sword and board warrior or two-hand have abilities to resist knockdowns/stuns so that would make it easier to not need a full healer assuming you plan to fill it in with potions.

Now, you want a rogue to pick locks/steal/disarm traps...mostly for the last two parts. You don't need a pure healer to play, just some more complicated manuevers to accomplish your goals. They DO however press importance on a tank and rogue, someone to open crap/steal/disarm traps and someone to keep your mages/DPS from getting squashed. Technically the aggro problem you can get around by killing them faster than they kill you. How your party survives is up to how tactical you are in using everything available.

It truly isn't forced on you to use them just in that way, although they do have points in areas pre-determined and specific classes. I think perhaps that's more for the "general crowd" though I don't believe that's what they had in mind all along. You get 2 mages, 3 warriors, 2 rogues and 1 Wardog as companions (4 Warriors if ya got Shale...I assume most people do.) But I don't think they thought so far as letting the player pick the companions role from the very start. It's quite possibly an oversight on their part for people who wanted total control of their companions.

You can however choose to make them hybrids in a sense, though it will take some time and your companions won't fully realize their "second role" potential until much farther down the line. Shale is by far the most complete, having modes for whatever you'd like to use her for, as a warrior golem.

I think it is an important discussion and hopefully someone of note reads up on this, they could have done more to be fair to the player having enough wit to choose such things for themselves, to customize their companions according to their parties' needs. The personality and history of the companions plays a large role too but they ought to have thrown in a choice or two more for mages/rogues to pick from...too many warriors you won't use if you are a warrior yourself.

In conclusion, props for your posting Blehd, it IS something that should be addressed if not with a patch for DA:O but at the very least for their next title.

I'd prefer if I could do that too, there's a respec mod that lets you do it FWIW: http://social.bioware.com/project/469/

I do think you're more flexible than you make it sound. E.g. once you understand how the various abilities work, you can have Sten and Oghren tank well enough, you can even make Wynne a tank if you want although that's not exactly her most powerful form. Pretty much only the dog and Shale are a bit limited in the skills they can learn. Shale can tank well with her limited skills, while the dog really only shines for dps and as a mage hunter (the dog is really really good at taking out individual mages with Overwhelm).

I understand that the different abilities of the companions do reflect their different personalities and their individual history, but I would have preferred if they simply got a bonus to some area or skill instead of being auto-gimped. A small incentive that e.g. makes it interesting to use Leliana with a bow but doesn't make me think I wasted a few levels if I use her with daggers (ironically, she comes with a dagger but only has bow skills...)

Well, you both have some excellent points. And yes, you are indeed more flexible then the initial line up of tanks and locked in healers I previously posted.

However, I didn't like the feeling of backtracking just to add that touch of my preferred personalities to my story. By the time I reached Sten, I believe I was level 7, and he was as far into two-handed spec as much as my main protagonist was.

Again, it's not game breaking by any means, it's just something I'd preferred had been set up differently.

Guess I've been in the Wilds too long, didn't know they'd already drummed up a mod to fix this. On a side note...I've noticed that Morrigan and Wynne even with warrior taunts, pull some massive aggro. It's been trying at times, tough decision to turn your back to the mobs you've grabbed to try and pick up the critter they are blasting (assuming you CAN snag them before either dumping heals/potions on em like crazy or you/they end up squished. Guess that's the challenge part though.) particularly bosses...somehow they just seem to draw a lot of attention at the worst times. I guess there's some gear to mitigate that, but I've hardly found those items to be superior to +damage ones.

You can tank with dual weapon or even two-handed. That's why taunt and threat are part of the warrior talents, not the weapon talents.

Archery, maybe not as much.
