DISCLAIMER: My brother came up with this, not me.

So, my brother was doing his second or third playthrough. He just passed the part where you pass Sandal in the Deep Roads surrounded by dead darkspawn and the frozen Ogre when he suddenly said, 'I think Sandal's a mage."

I know this sounds ridiculous. Dwarves are resistant to magic, they can't possibly be mages. But then I thought about it. The magic resistance is a genetic thing. But you see genetic mess-ups in real life all the time (albino rats, white cats with blue eyes, etc.). Wouldn't it be possible for Sandal to have been born with such a 'mutation' that gave him magical powers or removed his magical resistance? This could also explain his 'simpleness'; since he's not resistant to magic, he wouldn't be able to resist the effects of lyrium, either. And Bodhan did find him in the Deep Roads.

Thoughts?

Not much of a theory if the game has already said "mebbe"

if you give him varric's chunk of lyrium idol in act 3 hawke can speculate that he is a dwarven mage. also if you've heard his prophecy thing there's a hint that everyone used to be mages.

so yes i think it's fairly likely

Have you played the game?
The conversation where you can speculate if he's a mage is the first one you get when clicking him in Act 2.

Look at his face....

He is the true evil of the game.  There's so much more to him than we know.

I think maybe he has special powers from being exposed to lyrium.
Or he may be a throwback to an ancient time when dwarves had mages.
I also believe he is a lot more powerful and important than the characters in the game realise, I think Flemeth is watching him for some reason.
because he says something like the scary lady is watching me.

Whoever he is, he has proven that he is more powerful than me and my entire party. He wasted a huge group of demons and darkspawn, that would have probably taken my party and I down.
