Is there any possibility for changing the world map on the fly or is it just a static image with a list of X-Y coords for points of interest?

The goal would be something like a map from the board game Risk. The world would be broken up into regions and you could somehow indicate which faction was currently controlling that region. I imagine it is not possible to change the map (aside from making a bunch of different static versions, but that won't work for me). I think there would need to be a way to draw overlays on top of the image and I'm guessing that isn't possible.

Another alternative would be to use a different icon for the POI's. Like show the elf city icon if the elves control that city, or a different icon if the orcs or whatever control it.

Does any of this seem feasible?

well for a risk map all you do is make one static map with the borders. then make icons for each country and each color. place them ontop of the country and simply hide/show the one that is currently in control of that territory.

When I said "change the map" I meant like paint the region red or blue depending on who controlled it. But icons will probably work just fine. Thanks.

Go for Australasia but keep away from asia proper and avoid the lure of Africa which is tougher to take and hold than it looks! :)-->

I asked this question before the game was out. After playing a while, it seems like it must be possible to draw colored "stuff" over the top of the map since they do it in the OC. Not sure how though.

They totally ripped off my idea too. I think I'm going to sue. :P

The "spreading blight" effect on the main campaign's world map is done using a series of big semitransparent map pins called blight1 through blight7. See the worldmaps.xls 2DA file for where these are defined. I think the animation effect might be hard to pull off with the end user toolset, it appears to be built into the GUI, but a static change to the map should be doable in a similar manner.
