 She's written as an oppressive, borderline but faithful Templar Knight-Commander psychopath. However, she's also interesting as the main antagonist of the game. There isn't many stories about her other than her Templar official activities in Kirkwall and her obvious oppression.

What did she achieved to earn the rank of Knight-Commander?

Why is she very oppressive of the mages?

Why is she hostile towards Hawke?

Why did she spent most of her time not in public?

Is/Was she married and have a family?

Is there any tragic story that cause her hatred towards the mages, hostility towards outsiders in particular Fereldens and her lust for power?


Playing the game twice had me thinking of the final enemy that has to stopped. This interest came over me when I realized her clothing seems similar to Andraste. It was a simple assumption, yes but it grew deeper.

So, have any of you have the same interest in Meredith as I do or at least guesses on her background?

She got the title of Knight-Commander when the Viscount executed the previous one and she lead a coup against him. Ethena awarded her the title.

She had a sister who was a mage and became an abomination, killing 70 people in their village before they could stop her. She'll tell you that in the act 3 quests you do for her, but I don't remember exactly how you get the dialogue.

You side with Meredith at the beginning and help her. Then you can ask while in her office after two quests. And I think you learn about Meredith's promotion in Kirkwall's History Chapter 4.

I still do feel that Meredith has more colorful background though - I do hope that further in the series, there will be more codex mentions of her. In DA:O, Loghain Mac Tir has quite a reputation and was mentioned many times in several codexes, Meredith... not so much.

Meredith was great. Pity she went absolutely bat****.

I'm hoping for a Meredith DLC so that we can see her before the idol made her go mental. She did seem to genuinely care about the people of Kirkwall so I felt she was the Loghain type of villain. I think villains with a good side are better than the pure evil type.

It doesn't make the things she has done go away, but you get an insight into why she is so damaged and paranoid. Sad story.
