The problem as I see it is this, everyone has a different favourite character granted some are more popular than others, however everyone wants their fav to return as a squadmate or at least in a large role, its not going to happen, I think some people might be dissapointed.

Don't turn this into another "X characters can't come back/yes they can" debate.

I was just trying to find a nice way of saying I personally do not think Jacob will be back as a squad mate, I failed obviously.

Is Garrus comic relief? He's one of the most liked characters, and he's pretty much never used as such. He has some witty lines here and there but 'humor' isn't one of his defining characteristics.

I'm just wondering why several people think Jacob needs to be made "funny."  I think I know why that is, I'm just curious to see if people can approach the reasoning honestly.

Garrus is incredibly funny. Reach/Flexibility?  Fighting in classy antique shops? Buying Grunt lapdances? He's not strictly comic relief, but nobody said Jacob had to be either.

Jacob was boring as hell in Mass Effect 2. He was the worst character, I think most of us can agree with that.

Having said that, I don't want to see ANY squad member thrown away because the point of ME2 was recruitment, damnit! I want to see Jacob in ME3 play a role!

Jacob's gonna be Alliance again in Mass Effect 3. Watch. You read the SB dossiers and he gets a fat signing bonus or something for coming back. And out of all of Shepard's crew for both games he's the best candidate for Alliance N7 Corps.

And we gotta get loud and spill drink at the Citadel. Or maybe an Asari strip club in Omega.

Because Jacob is utterly unremarkable in both personality and back story. If it wasn't for the unintentional hilarity with femshep he'd be as forgettable as a random Blue Suns mook.

So "funny black guy" is the first way anyone can think of as a means for distinguishing Jacob from the rest of the crew?

ANYTHING would help him. It speaks volumes about his (lack of) character that a robot with literally no personality like Legion is more interesting and likable than he is.

Jacob was a good character overall, the only things I didn't like was his romace stuff and his "yo yo, ima pimp raperz" attitude sometimes. Other than that, he was really an ok character.

He's the normal guy on a ship full of crazy... Of course most people think he's boring. His skills are terrible and his  behaviour towards other squadmembers is questionable. I couldn't care less if he's in ME3 or not.

Jacob is one of the few stable and reliable people on board. Call me boring if you like but psychos and backstabbers on his ship seems like a risk Shepard should avoid.

But Jacob surely deserved that brohug.

I enjoyed jacob more then most the ME2 characters. He was honest, and has a history about him. His loyalty mission, was great. Showed how much emotion dwells in him. He was a good LI for fem shep. The fact that "everyone" hates him, puzzles me. His powers are limited, which sucked why he doesn't have others as wel I don't know.

Urgh no. Let Jacob be cameo'd and have Bioware focus on more important stuff.

the PSM3 preview has many people decidedly worried about the role of Jacob Taylor in ME3 because the publication alleges Jacob Taylor was literally THE least popular character in ME2 and let you read between the lines as it were.

The problem is the article itself largely makes no attempt to distinguish fact from speculation although after spending some time with BioWare this is the distinct impression they were left with and it's something many of us have long suspected. They could have misinterpreted an off the cuff comment or it could just be baseless speculation.

In any case BioWare would have looked at save data and fan feedback and if this is what they found I believe they will have greatly misread the base and to replace him at this stage with another male human love interest would be a great disservice to the character and fans.

Jacob is not unpopular because people dislike the character or his race - I feel people are dissatisfied with the way he was handled (poorly written dialogue aside) and are disappointed to see great potential for a character wasted like this. He's a diamond in the rough. Now I feel he may never get a chance to shine. Who's to say James Saunders will be any better?

If Jacob was only there as a token minority in the first place it was in the absence of anything else and it was the writers at fault. Of the five potential human characters in ME3 (Ash, Kaidan, Miranda, Jack, James) all of them are white/caucasian with the slightest exception of Kaidan and I think this speaks volumes and it says more about the writers then it does about Mass Effect.

Jacob needs to be retconned into a "soul brotha", complete with an afro.

To the person who said he acts like a "pimp raperz": I don't think we're talking about the same Jacob. Frankly, I've never seen a chocolate more vanilla.

While I don't really like him as much as the others, I definitely like him more than Kaiden (with his soft, story-book voice). I just hope he's funnier this time.

Because Mass Effect totally needs the token funny black guy, right?

He needs to have funny stories, and he needs to avoid being a stereotype.

This is what I don't understand, Jacob was NOT a black stereotype in ME2.

Sarge in Halo was a stereotype
Cole Train in Gears of War was a black stereotype
SGT Griggs in Modern Warfare was a black stereotype

Jacob wasn't and I think that is why some people didn't like Jacob because he WASNT that "Samuel L. Jackson" type comedy relief/spoof/minstreal show type black guy such as a Cole Train in GOW.

He was just a normal human, not some stereotype that people can relate to and I think that is why some people couldn't...."relate" to Jacob.

My 2cents

Well, he did have some of that "playa" attitude at times, wich was kinda stereotypical for a black guy imo. But I agree with you on that he was mostly just an average human type character.

Jacob was confirmed to just be a cameo. His skills sucked since he was just a weaker version of Grunt which is why I never used him.

I just want Tali, Wrex and Legion and call me a happy guy. Legion definitely did NOT get enough playtime, and they should make up for it in ME3

I certainly wouldn't mind having him back. I tend to play Sheploos so I often avoid the prrrriiiiizzzee, but nonetheless he was a good bro to have (particularly after the GPS came out).

I wouldn't trade him for Garrus, though.

I must have missed this. Do you remember where you read this.

I like Jacob. He's human. I mean he behaves like an actual ordinary person. His opinions were interesting, and bringing him with me on the derelict reaper ship was an interesting moment.

Actually I think on the derelict reaper when we observe the dragon teeth is when Jacob shines the most. I like having a stable character at my back. He's cool, calm, and is dedicated to getting the job done.

People say Jacob has no personality, but I think I can point out some of his key traits.

Jacob
-Hates mercenaries/assassin's.criminals in general
-Does not have fond memories of Eden Prime, and distrusts geth.
-Believes that getting the job done is more important than being restricted by the rules
-A little lacking in self confidence (Especially after his loyalty mission when he says Miranda, "deserves a better man than me."
-Can understand the need to make harsh choices when the need arrives. (Jacob approved of his father feeding the toxic food to the crew in order to keep key officers sane, but did not approve of what his father did after that.)

There is more, but this short list ought to be enough to show Jacob has plenty potential as a character. In fact looking back Jacob is a bit like Garrus.

Jacob is a cool dude.

Probably not as cool a dude as Kaidan, but a cool dude nonetheless.

If he is outright replaced by James Sanders I will be displeased.
