Jacob was confirmed to just be a cameo. His skills sucked since he was just a weaker version of Grunt which is why I never used him.

I must have missed this. Do you remember where you read this.

I like Jacob. He's human. I mean he behaves like an actual ordinary person. His opinions were interesting, and bringing him with me on the derelict reaper ship was an interesting moment.

Actually I think on the derelict reaper when we observe the dragon teeth is when Jacob shines the most. I like having a stable character at my back. He's cool, calm, and is dedicated to getting the job done.

People say Jacob has no personality, but I think I can point out some of his key traits.

Jacob
-Hates mercenaries/assassin's.criminals in general
-Does not have fond memories of Eden Prime, and distrusts geth.
-Believes that getting the job done is more important than being restricted by the rules
-A little lacking in self confidence (Especially after his loyalty mission when he says Miranda, "deserves a better man than me."
-Can understand the need to make harsh choices when the need arrives. (Jacob approved of his father feeding the toxic food to the crew in order to keep key officers sane, but did not approve of what his father did after that.)

There is more, but this short list ought to be enough to show Jacob has plenty potential as a character. In fact looking back Jacob is a bit like Garrus.

It was in the european version of OMP. He just wasn't useful when compared to every other teammate.

I'd rather not have Jacob back if it means I can avoid seeing "homie" in the same sentence. Kaidan's never someone's homie, but Jacob? That's my homie. *rollseyes*

So he doesn't even get a loyalty mission 2.0? I guess his character gets no elaboration, or resolution in Mass Effect 3. Cameos aren't much of an appearance. I mean Jacob could be given better abilities, and the writers could focus more on the aspects of his personality that make him Jacob.

My canon Shep actually would have been more than relieved to see a guy like Jacob, someone who was really stable, be on his team. You guys are mistaking "stable" for "boring", I believe. I always enjoy talking to him, because I always enjoy talking to my squad in the game. I certainly didn't see his character as "flat" or "uninteresting" just because he wasn't tank-bred, experimented on, used as a tool since the age of six, or had guilt-trips over something that really wasn't his fault to begin with.

Personally, I think Jacob was a bit of a throwback to ME1, where the squadmates didn't really have the whole "badass crazy MFers" vibe as a necessary part of their characters. Sure, crazy can be awesome, but to paraphrase Joker's quote in ME2: "[You] can only handle so much crazy". Shepard (and the player) needed a character to identify with, one who was the most stable of the squad. I daresay that my canon Shepard would consider Jacob, beating out even Tali and Garrus (by a close margin) as his best friend out of the entire team by the time ME2 ends.

But of course, that's just me.

While I don't really like him as much as the others, I definitely like him more than Kaiden (with his soft, story-book voice). I just hope he's funnier this time.

Because Mass Effect totally needs the token funny black guy, right?

He needs to have funny stories, and he needs to avoid being a stereotype.

This is what I don't understand, Jacob was NOT a black stereotype in ME2.

Sarge in Halo was a stereotype
Cole Train in Gears of War was a black stereotype
SGT Griggs in Modern Warfare was a black stereotype

Jacob wasn't and I think that is why some people didn't like Jacob because he WASNT that "Samuel L. Jackson" type comedy relief/spoof/minstreal show type black guy such as a Cole Train in GOW.

He was just a normal human, not some stereotype that people can relate to and I think that is why some people couldn't...."relate" to Jacob.

My 2cents

Goddamn it! I'm not saying that he is a stereotype. I'm saying that he needs to be funnier in ME3 and avoid being a stereotype (in the process of being made funny).

Yeah cause a black character cant be popular without shuckin and jiving.
Alot of people not, all but many Im sure just dont like jacob because he's a level headed down to earth black man and that takes some people out of their comfort zones. Make him a fool like Cole Train from gears and watch how popular he becomes with the average insecure gamer(read between the lines).

I don't see anything wrong with what 100k said. I think he defended his position perfectly.

Second, I think most people disliked Jacob because most thought he was boring. Period. Not because he was black, not because he wears weird socks, not because he sometimes moves his lips when he reads.

Because he was boring (plus, if you played FemShep and tried to romance him she basically threw herself at him like he was dusted in gold).

well I'd say he's the character I use less, but I guess it's his uniform which I hate...if the include some heavy armour or medium at least in a future AA pack I'd use him more often...but he's an OK charachter...although I really hate his uniform...

I'd calm down, man. I understood what you were saying. I didn't think anything of your "he should be funnier" comment. It seems like people pull the race card fast now-a-days.

Take a breather with me.

I understand you are being sarcastic. I am going to elaborate on the point you brought up.

Because then we would only continue to corrupt Bioware characters, and steer them away from who they really are.

It's like turning Jack into a girly girl in Mass Effect 3. I would never stand for that. Jack is one of my favorites, and the only love interest I willingly pursue. Having her all soft and nice would kill my favorite character.

Kaidan is fine as he was in Mass Effect. His only problem is that he shares a brain with Ashley after Virmire. Aparently the loss was so traumatic that Kaidan and Ash became brain linked. Now they say the exact same things. So changing Kaidan is pointless since he now shares Ashley's renegade persona.

Miranda being less ****ty would take away her entire personality. She's an insecure little girl trying to run away from daddy. Flashing it around is her way of rebelling, and without it we essentially lose part the tiny fragment of a personality Miranda had.

You bring up a good point. We shouldn't want characters to be different. We should want their personalities explored not altered completely. If we want someone else than we can just get a different character not destroy an already existing one.

Its not spandex, its unstable molecules...same as Miranda's. Ok not really. Since Bioware took away customizing armor for your mates I just roleplay that its some futuristic material.

I like Jacob way more than Kaidan. They are very similar in many aspects(alliance soldiers, biotic powers, angsty past, well-adjusted, both won't speak of personal stuff right away etc), but Kaidan is 'by the book' kind of guy who sees loyalty to the Alliance as most important thing in the world, and Jacob has no problem in bending rules if it gets the job done. And I like such characters more that 'good kids', so I hope Jacob is back.

i agree. jacob is really the exact kinda guy id want as my wing man. maybe omse people want psychos or comic book heroes, but ot me having jacob makes mass efect seem normal, instead of so abnormal. do i really want a bunch of psycho lunatics, or a cool laid back dude who can prolly help our intramural basketball team win the local cluster 2 vs 2 tourny. im not saying garrus wouldnt be good as a low post presence, but jacobs prolly got more skillz.

I for one loved Kaidan, everything about him, from his stability to his biotic abilities.  I liked Jacob, but there is no comparison for me.  I'd pick Kaidan, Liara and Garrus anytime over any of the new ME2 squad.  They appealed to me.  I liked their personalities.  The only other character I'd take on my squad is Tali.  Give me the ME1 team over the others from ME2 any day.  Now if we're talking new ME2 characters, I liked Jacob the best.  He didn't drive me crazy and he wasn't needy.

There's no problem with being by the book.  Most military men are trained to live with standards and I appreciate that in real and in games.
