This is what I don't understand, Jacob was NOT a black stereotype in ME2.

Sarge in Halo was a stereotype
Cole Train in Gears of War was a black stereotype
SGT Griggs in Modern Warfare was a black stereotype

Jacob wasn't and I think that is why some people didn't like Jacob because he WASNT that "Samuel L. Jackson" type comedy relief/spoof/minstreal show type black guy such as a Cole Train in GOW.

He was just a normal human, not some stereotype that people can relate to and I think that is why some people couldn't...."relate" to Jacob.

My 2cents

Exactly.  Thanks for the thoughtful analysis of Jacob.  I agree.  I support Jacob in ME3.  He's a love interest, so he should get the same treatment that the others do in ME3.

I disagree.  Check the guide.

I don't understand how anyone can see Jacob as their "bro." Especially not male Shepards. In fact, his problem isn't that he's "normal" ... he's not even that. He's actually pretty bizarre, a total enigma.

This is a conversation with Jacob:

Jacob: (cordial) Commander, can I help you with something?
Shepard: I'm more interested in just talking for a bit (femsheps read: help me take your shirt off chocolate man, rawrr!)
Jacob: (short but uncomfortable pause) ... soundz gud. Gotta say, you run dis ship tight, and we gettin' things dun. Informal, huh? Aight. Yo ship, yo time... *wipes bugs w/ omni-tool*
Shepard: ... relax Jacob, I just want to know what makes you tick.
Jacob: Ha! If you wuz any other Cerberus I be all liek: whaaaa? But naw, it's cool. I trust you. So, what do you wanna know?
[Talk about family] = nothing. Alright, not his fault. Move on.
[Ask about Miranda] = guy gets SUPER TOUCHY. What kind of bro doesn't give advice about a girl he's been with before? What if I'm interested?
[Ask about his trust in you] ... yeah man, we'za solidiers. We know what's up.
... I should get back to my duties. Nice talking to you Shepard, let's do this again some time.
Shepard:... what the hell just happened??

And every conversation with him is like that. He's awkward, puts on this phony "cool cat" persona when he talks to you while managing to say absolutely nothing. I mean Jacob, tell me:

--> What's your story? Literally all I know: [early life, disciplinary father who wasn't around much .............. Alliance (no details) .............
Cerberus (very few details).]

--> Anything interesting in your time with the Alliance? Corsair, you
were practically a mini-Spectre. Go to Omega, turns out that Ish sent
Jacob into a trap of batarian/turian thugs. Now, that would've been
interesting to know about. Nope. Nothing.

--> What are you fighting for? You get worked up about how the Alliance didn't work well for you. You insist you want to make a difference, so much so that you joined a group that you don't trust. And yet, I have no clue what your motives are and what drives you.

Kaidan had a story, was approachable and not nearly as awkward when spoken to, and had a very genuine personality. Yeah, there was the whole Horizon BS, but don't get me started on how many herp-derp moments Jacob has in the game because there are a ton.

Sometimes I get the feeling they legitimately made him boring. I mean, the Shadow Broker dossiers shed no light on him despite complaints that he's dry, they have a character who confirms what everyone else's impression of him is (Jack: "Jacob doesn't know who he is") and some moments of the game practically assume he wasn't with you. Maybe they plan on making him take the "next step" in ME3, and he'll become a great character?

But no. It's not because he's black. It's not because he's stable. It's not because other characters overshadow him. His character is very just poorly done.

Hah, your input shows that there is a problem with YOU, not JT. If you hear things the way you wrote them, then you have issues!

You have unreal expectations for JT. He keeps personal business..... Personal! With the way you wrote his dialog, would he want to talk to you? Be your pal? I work with a lot of people and most all of the keep personal business to themselves.

Kaiden, more approachable than JT? Naw

That is an obvious exaggeration to illustrate the point: Jacob's personality is phony. He acts all cool when he's talking to you but it's both forced and fake, and he says nothing but absolute pointless crap.

And look at your rebuttal: Naw. The one with "issues" here is not me.

Kaidan is easily more approachable than Jacob (I don't know any JT, he's Jacob). I'll one-up that one and say Jack is more approachable than Jacob and I can back it up. Kaidan wasn't overly personal, but he had meaningful things to say and told you things that made you get who he is as a person. Jacob just has pointless crap to say at best, and it shows with how you barely know him any better at the end of the game than you do at the beginning.

Hah, you are pretty insecure! You showed your way of thinking and you got called on it. JT speaks just fine english but all you can hear is some sort of ebonic street slang. You dropping a racist dialog is in no way similar to me using southern slang? You have issues. Embrace what YOU wrote.

And... Your opinion is no more valid than anyone else's. I think JT is great. That's why I'm on this thread.

You are afraid of approaching JT? After a few trips, he should spill his life story? Really? I know tons of people that keep their personal business private. I bet you do too. You can't dispute that you know people like that. JT is a fairly normal guy. You didn't even argue that because you can't!

More to the point, you really didn't say anything that made sence. You should not enter debates in which opinion and insults are all you can come up with. I think I'll just stop responding to you because you have issues that need resolving.

I will romance Jacob this time, and hopefully I will finally figure him out...

And, yeah, I would like to see Jacob again.

Jacob was the Kaiden of ME2, i personally like him, i dont understand the hate he gets either, He just suffers from being Mr. Good guy, spotless record and no character flaws.

That's a nice cop-out. "Well, I'm not gonna talk more because you have issues!"

Again, I know Jacob's english is fine, I wrote that dialogue on purpose to make a point. He acts all cool and stuff when you talk to him, but cool people don't try to act cool, they just are. Jacob comes across as a lame because that's what he is. Jack says it best, "Jacob doesn't know who he is."

Well, if you're done talking, I'll leave open those points you obviously can't respond to.

This is what I know about Jacob: didn't see his dad much as a kid......... Alliance......... OMG I HATE THE ALLIANCE, CERBERUS... Yeah, I'm Cerberus now, I hate them too though. Before and after the game is over, that's all I know. Everyone else can tell me SOMETHING of value without being overly personal. Mordin was involved in genophage work, Grunt who hasn't even lived before can talk to me a bit about what Okeer tried to teach him and how he tries to make sense of it. Kasumi doesn't tell much because she's secretive, but she makes up for it but voicing her own input about what's going on through the mission (she does have some things about herself that she talks about though). Miranda is a very poorly developed character, honestly not much better than Jacob. She makes up for it by being a great leader and ally, and you can see that in her as a person.

Sorry, but there's only an extent to which one can be private to expect to be respected. It's the talkers that move up in life, they find ways to build rapport with others and make themselves liked, and being liked will give them an advantage. You think Jacob would be able to make more of a connection on a friendly-level with Shepard, both being ex-Alliance turned Cerberus. But nope, he fails epically in that regard. That's why I don't care for him much. It's pretty sad that the guy who's touted as "normal/stablizing" can't display a human side better than the "crazy" ones.

Why do I even need stabilzing anyway? I can stablize my squad just fine. Having him on the ship doesn't make my squad any more cohesive than it would be with out him, nor do I need him for my own mental health. It's actually quite the opposite on both counts, getting into a petty fight with Thane and Tali, and being frustrating to talk to.

Edit: I also fail to see my insecurities, do enlighten me if you'd be so kind.
