That some retailers have dropped the price. After the initial 2 week rush, retail numbers have dropped sharply so possibility that retailers over anticipated the number of sales based on pre orders and now are trying to shift stock which is increasing their overhead costs.

Alternatively some might have been able to renegotiate/negotiate new contracts with EA, based on heavy wholesale price reductions, which has allowed EA to shift its product and state 2 million units have been "sold in" in their financial reports to shareholders. Thus retailers can reduce retail prices whilst maintaining the same profit margins or have recieved some credit agreement on other EA title/ buyback clause placed in the contract for any new stock they purchase from EA.

Nope, it is incorrect. EA's finacial reports state that they sold in which is finacial/corp talk for shipped/sold to retailers.

And would stores bother ordering more copies if it wasn't selling?

It also means for the stores that ordered hundreds of them are still sitting on them as well...and if they have negotiated with EA so they can sell them for 20 bucks etc, EA is basically giving them games away for free, you understand ?

Plenty of stores without having much knowledge of the games they sell probably would have thought that DA2 would have sold pretty well too, particularly when DA:O became such a hit. Lets be honest, the game did sell pretty well in week one.

There's a lot of backroom deals with dealers if they buy 'X' amount of a certain product, then they get a discount, or another product at a lower price.

My gamestop, the shelves are full with ps3 and 360 copies of DA2, its not selling very well there.

And if it was selling as horribly as people think, then would stores still buy it at a discounted rate?  I personally don't think so.

I noticed that more Europeans are buying DAII now than Americans. What does this mean?

Because places like amazon.uk are selling it super cheap. I think the cheapest was around 16 pounds, need a UK'er to verify.

What is sixteen pounds compare to dollars?  And why hasn't Great Britian gone over to the Euro?

Blame Bioware.

Bioware makes epic RPG DAO.

Bioware says DA2 will be geared towards Call of Duty players.

Bioware dumbs down DA2.

What does that say about how Bioware views CoD players?  And by treating CoD players as stupid Bioware didnt gain their business and pissed off their existing fanbase.

I agree!
I play Halo reach and I enjoy how mindless I can be when I play it. Sometimes I just don't want to think at all and just shoot at everything that moves. (of course some think before they shoot and they often do better than me)
None the less I enjoy RPG games that provide dephth and challenge, thus there is no need to "streamline" or "dumbdown" to apeal to players like me.
Its like chocolate and pizza. I like both, but i don't want them mixed together.

Hay hay guise, there's a bad economy out there, don'cha know?

And it ain't Christmas or any other major holiday associated with gift giving. These sales numbers can't possibly be as bad as they appear to be, right? I mean, EA's only gone and said they have great faith in the IP and other such corporate blah blah.. I wonder if they said the same thing about C&C....

edit :

So, what with the EA sale on Steam I've noticed that Crysis 2 is not on sale, despite being released not much later than Dragon Age 2. I seem to recall Dragon Age 2 being on the Steam sale. Oh the inconsistencies of these publishers..

And yet people are still buying DA2 :3

You really don't have to watch sales drop week by week. Yeah anyone who wants the game has the game. When the hype is gone, the sales will be nothing. You don't buy DA2 weekly. Its a one time deal so this really means nothing we don't already now.

hrm, Canada's economy seems to be chugging along fine. I know the US is still struggling. But the trend of the sales estimate sales to be around 1.3-1.5 million. Which is pretty decent! Not putting it down for that, but it is a huge disappointed to EAWare's goals for DA2 of 5+ million sales and 90+ metacritic score.

The point is that while DA:O kept selling based on good word of mouth, DA2 came to a halt based on bad word of mouth.

Sales are less, but the cost of development is also less because:
1. shorter development time
2. used fewer manpower
3. (joke ) recruited dumber crews who asked for lower pay

So, the overall profit could be still higher than DA:O, and EA is happy about it.

Possible outcome: DA3 will be released. The sales will be even worse but EA will still earn much. The same situation will repeat (like the maps in DA2) until the series becomes dead like skeleton archers. Then EA will move to another game series and play the same trick. Share price keeps increasing. So as their chairman's annual bonus. Boss happy.

The ultimate purpose for a corporation is to make good money, not to make good product. Making good products is one way to make good money, not the only way. Remember this ECON1001 principle.

Thing is, making good game makes more money in the longrun. But greedy ****s likes the EAsuit probably dont understand that. Hence why they've been destroying games and studios for a while.

I'm Kanadian and I love my country but claiming you 'coutnry is the best ever' is political dissucssion and disprectful to others. I did not slander Kanada.

That said, I respect Raen's ruiling on this matter...

Anyways, on topic: vhghcharts is inaccurate and it doesn't even trust its own numbers. EA cna't lie about their numbers or esle they can face heavy fines and punishment. That's why despite them being a big bad evil company, their numbers are more trustworthy due to self intrest.

Aw, don't mind him. He propably got confused and thought he was at the Codex. That's normal language there. Have a cookie (it's a rum cookie, I stole Nepps stash *grin*). I like Canada. I've never been there, but I still like it.

Anyway. Is that true? They expected to hit the 5 mill mark with DA 2? Oh dear. That sounds like they honestly believed that they would snatch a good chunk of the mass-market, and the CoD people. For a sequel to surpass DA:O it would have to be a much better game than its predecessor. These people are experts in making games. How is it possible that they failed to see that this was very risky business?

Things can happen. I've seen a lot of strange things happen myself. The tide could turn, and DA 2 might start selling like hot-cakes, but what are the odds for that? That was a high reach. I didn't know they aimed that high. Who did their research, I wonder.

*Sigh* How many times must you be told? Yes VHGcharts is inaccurate for marketing research, but general forecast or after-sales analysis doesn't require the same level of accuracy. If the number is close, then no the numbers can't be trusted as they may affect the outcome as in which game sold better; but when there's a 10x difference, then I don't see how it should matter. Doesn't matter exactly how much, DA:O outsells DA2 by ALOT. VHGcharts is accurate enough for us to draw that conclusion.

As for EA's own number being more trustworthy, I suggest you look up the word "agency problem". I would take any number published by a listed company with a pinch of salt. Numbers can be and will be spun to produce a better Q & annual report. We alrdy saw that mechanic at work with the shipped in vs. shipped PR trick.

*filches a rum cookie, gives Sabi a hug, and runs away*  I wonder how that too Sabi,  it could sell like hotcakes, I suppose. But to surpass it's predecessor...and sell 5 mil? Yikes, I had no idea they set the bar that high either.
