I agree, but what did we do to deserve DA2?

Poor wording in the criticism we gave DA:O.

I don't care. There are better alternatives.

And I could still go back to DAO.

Yep, I agree.

We should swallow any and all products thrown our way and be completely thrilled about it.

...

Yeah, no.

I'd say we're well aware of how DA2 is selling and how much of a success or failure that is for our company and Dragon Age's future potential.

Really?  Then... is there a reason why you're being so cryptic here?

How IS DA2 selling?  And has it met EA/Bioware's   projected sales goals?

Seriously, what's the point in accusing us of  "confirmation bias" when you could easily just come out and tell us that we're  wrong?  My guess is, you would tell us we're wrong... if we were.  But we're not... and that's another thing you're all aware of, isn't it.

The answer is obvious. In case of any doubts here is the answer :

Let's all remember: they -gave away- copies of ME2 to boost DA2 sales. I don't care how old ME2 was (is)--they -gave it away-. This has been discussed and analyzed ad nauseum, but really--need more be said?

He's being cryptic because it's not our business to know.  (And seriously, they have bosses and the success or failure of a game is not our business.  Even if they wanted to tell, you'd likely get fired if you revealed inner working of a company).  Outside of what public stockholders need to know, this kind of stuff doesn't ever get revealed to the fans.

The confirmation bias was people just spouting off the term "it's a failure" without at least objectively looking at sales or trying to see if the data was correct or incorrect.  For every person who looked at the game here, others just looked at said "I hate the game, therefore I'm looking for data to confirm that everybody hates it", or something akin to that.  And if Bioware spent half the budget on the game than, say, DA:O, they could still come out ahead.

I think his point was rather that if sales went exceptionally well, the PR departments would make sure the world knows. That's the name of the game. Sure, noone can tell us about numbers without getting into serious difficulties. But the point stands: If it was exceptional, we'd know.

Agreed.

What have we done to deserve this in the first place?

We have spiraled into an Unpleasable Fanbase.  If I were Bioware, I would be looking to expand the fanbase and marginalize the hardcores as much as possible, so as not to be held hostage by the loudest minority elements on the internet.  I would probably try to do this without an 18-month development cycle, though.

Its easy to please the RPG fanbase, just make a good game. Case in point, The Witcher 2.

That "minority" is the core base of fans they got big on.
And that "minority" bought DA:O to make it their most sold product to date.

Yeah, screw them tbh.

All they had to do to please the fan base would be to make DAO2. That's it. Not so hard, is it? It would had been easier, cheaper, and perfectly doable in 18 months. Instead they wasted time and resources doing a 180 on DAO, and in return they got a crappy game, a gigantic stain on their reputation, and a horde of annoying DAO fans that still come to their forums 3 months after the game was out to complain.

Retail only right? The Steam release says 150k was sold on their platform. D2D and EA Downloader added some I'm sure, but Steam is the premier digitial distribution platform so the numbers on the other two are likely going to be lower. All in all it could be closer to 1.6k.

PS3 is having problems with its PSN and hacking, surely that would affect sales.

It went down on the 7th week of release, by which time sales were down 90.7% from release week Worldwide, and 96.1% in North America.

I'm not convinced that a majority of people who enjoyed Origins are properly reflected by the loudest people posting in the forums.  I'm talking about the most insular and elitist fans here, the ones who dog the developers' every step.  I suspect that there are a lot of Bioware fans who could enjoy a Dragon Age game that isn't indistinguishable from DA:Origins.

I see a strong current in the Bioware fanbase similar to the internet Fallout community,.  The same sort of "glittering gems of hate" are appearing here, with the same misplaced sense of ownership.  Those sorts of "fans" can cause a lot of trouble.  Bioware appears to be looking for where the lines are drawn.  What elements will attract the maximum number of players with different preferences?  That's what they're trying to hash out right now.

If DA2 hadn't been badly rushed and had been an excellent example of an action RPG, some of these fans may have been even bitter than they are now, because there would be no hope of a return to the "right" kind of game.

Nope.

Since they stated they wanted a metacritic rating of 90+ and 5+ million sales. Didn't happen.

While DA2 isn't by any means "THE WORST GAME EVAAAAHHHR", I don't understand how they could have expected something like that. I mean...as much as they could possibly like their own product, I'd dare the devs to say with a straight face that it's an awesome game. Seriously.

Edit.
I like vaginas as well.

People are still buying this game? Even after all the backlash?! Wow.

It's pretty sad that DA2 will never even reach 2 million total sales - that is if your numbers for total sales are remotely accurate.

And alot of them still have not bought DA2 which probably makes us even more annoying.

People that actively post on forums represent less than 1% of the gaming population.  They just are the ones who take it most seriously and are the most vocal.
