Unless they have access to every checkout operators till who scanned and sold a copy then those charts and mainly guess work.

Where do they get there data from, how reliable is it etc.

Only Bioware and EA will actually the know the real amount of units sold.

Ummm they know how many copies THEY sold to those stores and clerks.  That's all they care about.

Well well. The much applauded Witcher 2 hasn't even broken 1 mil yet. Goes to show that you can sell a turd with the Bioware logo on it and still make more money than a no-name developer with his labor of love.

The much applauded Witcher 2 has outsold DA2 on the PC in its 2nd week,
Wait till it is released on the XBox.

Although it is strange.
DA2 mostly sells in the US while Witcher 2 sells in Europe.
That gives you something to think about the type of gamers there. Apparently americans like "teh awesome button!!!!"

This. And also, the fact that Sapkovski is more popular in Europe contributed to the sales a bit.

My point is that to successfully market a product, you cannot solely cater your product to the hardcore fan base that regularly posts in forums.  While you shouldn't neglect them, you cannot customize the product to their every whim.

Oh, please, tell that to Blizzard with Diablo III, Starcraft 2 and WoW. Tell them how they are wrong and don't know how to make profit and should target new audiences and make starcraft and Diablo more appealing to Call of Duty players

DA2 was a very successful cash-in. But that was also a one-time thing.

Actually it wasnt at all. It sold half as many copies as DA:O and has caused a significant drop in interest for the franchise. Its about as unsuccessful as you can get short of making a loss.
