Hi there,
I recently upgraded the kickback ability for Varric. The description says that it now should make 800% damage to staggered enemies. However the effect does not occur. Anybody else had this problem?

The upgrade is never shown in the ability description, but when it's triggered, you can actually notice the usual sound effect from the cross-class combo. I'm not sure if the damage is actually increased or not.

I'm pretty sure it's not. I found out the hard way during the rock wraith boss fight. That was my only cross-class combo too...

Note that Backlash upgrade does not provide 800% physical damage VS. stagger, but 800% physical force.
It means you'll send enemies flying across the room with it, but won't damage them much. ARW is immune knockback and knockdown, that's why the ability doesn't affect it.
