And if it's any consolation, the Paragon Shepards are the only Shepards doubting they can win (and to Harbinger's face) in the Arrival DLC.

Can't stand that line.
Almost as bad as "I won't sacrifice the soul of my species..."

Liara delivered a line that I thought was wrong ... If she is with you in Chora's Den she says something like "We Asaris are more comfortable with our bodies then other species, so places like this exploit it." What? If you aren't ashamed of your bodies, see sensuality as natural then why would you feel exploited? I just figure my Shep's translator went on the blink and she really said "We Asaris are more comfortable with our bodies then other species, but I just never wanted to work in places like this."

If you haven't noticed, Liara's a bit prissy for an asari and doesn't really approve of the prurient interest in her race by other species, especially in ME1.  Take her with you on Noveria and talk to Lorik Qu'in.  He'll mention how young men were quite interested in Benezia's striking outfit, and Liara will remark that young men have an unhealthy obsession with asari.  On the Normandy, she'll lament the promiscuous reputation asari have acquired.  Now add in the fact she hadn't ever melded with anyone, despite being 40+ years past the age when asari typically leave home (around 60, based on what the asari by the weapons kiosk on Ilium says), and was an unusually non-social example of her species in general.

I actually think the one you quoted is worse. Wtf does it even mean? Souls of individuals, sure that I can understand. 'Soul of my species' is hyperbole turned to the max imo.

It honestly never bothered me: The Illusive Man tries to convince Shepard that they need the base to win the war against the Reapers, to which Shepard responds that he won't do something out-of-character to do it. The "compromising who I am" can refer to either letting Cerberus win that battle, or assuming that letting the base exist does indeed an ethic value. The same applies to the "sacrificing the soul of my species".

Now, if there's one horrible line in the series, it's Shepard's 'trademark' “You're not even alive… not really. You're just a machine, and machines can be broken.”

So pretty much if you're paragon and you like, not tolerate, the line in the OP, you're an idealist.

Everyone else who picks it because they are left with no other options are realists with a different perspective than Renegades who keep the base.

Mystery solved, GG everybody, GG.

Wait, that line is bad?

Yes it is.
It does well in a rethorical speech which has a goal of convincing people to join your cause, but it sounds bad in a conversation like the one we have with TIM. An otherwise good monologue device used in a dialogue very poorly.

Soul of the species line is so much worse.

The 'won't let fear' line is fine. It's actually a good line. It's Shepard laying down the law. Shep will not be fearmongered into giving TIM this awesome power, which he'll surely abuse in some way. The base is not a weapon to stop the Reapers, it is a massive metal womb that creates Reapers.

Anything that can be learned from it is already in EDI's databanks and has already been gleaned from Sovie's corpse and the derelect Reaper.

It's not an ultimate weapon. It will not decide the final battle. It's just TIM using fear to get a new toy.

Well, at least it isn't as bad as "Goodbye, little wing... I shall see you again with the dawn..."
Gah.

Odd,
I just assumed that thats what 'Liara' means in Asari 'Little Wing'.
Sort of the way many names have another or original meaning.

How
dare Matriarch Benezia say goodbye to her daughter, she should be all
apathetic and unfeeling, 'cause its not like a mother might care about
her last moments on this mortal coil. /sarcasm

Yeah, that's not what I was getting at at all. Goodbyes are fine, but the "I shall see you again with the dawn" is just such corny writing.

OK, there seems to be some confusion about Man-Giraffe-Dog on the forums, notably that it just looks like a Giraffe-Dog. Well... that's the POINT. Why do you think I'm the only one warning you. It's disguised as a Giraffe-Dog until it's ready to take over the world.
OK this is how Man-Giraffe-Dog came to be:
Image IPB

While growing up it was spotted in the wild (but the team was all killed by it and the photos were recovered afterwards)
Image IPB

After which it began its infiltration of humanity, disguised as Giraffe-Dog:

Which leaves us here. Man-Giraffe-Dog is poised to attack and destroy humanity and I'm trying to warn everyone before it's too late. This is totally serial guys. You need to prepare.

Excelsior!

destroying the collector base makes me facepalm only because smart scientific/engineering practices just don't exist in the Mass Effect universe... seriously you could explore and study all of the collector base using robots with today's technology - no risk of indoctrination, but in the 23rd century it's smarter to send people in with no protection????

too be honest the line did not bother me at all and to be fair it does sum up your reasoning if you play as a paragon which basically you do not believe in using ways that sacrifice lives in the hope of saving many

What if you reasoning had nothing to do with that all? What if your reasoning was more in line with not trusting Cerberus? Not everyone who destroys the base is a saint.

Don't have a problem with 'I won't sacrifice the soul of my species," nor, "I won't let fear compromise who I am."

I can't stand, 'I got better.'

Or on Horizon: "It's been too long. How have you been?"

*shudders*

Yeah, the "It's been too long" on horizon is TERRIBLE. How about "Thank God you're safe, I came here looking for you."

My Shep was a mix of Paragon/Renegade (like the majority of functioning people) and it was remembering Legions words that made my Shep destroy the base. Paraphrased, one faction of geth sought their own destiny outside of a predetermined path the Reapers have set. Humanity is one of the few civilizations it seems that advance so fast and radically. I don't see emulating Reapers to stop a cycle as a well thought out strategy to defeat said cycle. Surely a completely radical approach is needed, free of predetermined paths. Look at the Normandy and the alliances strategy to build a ship using alien design and input even though they just fought a war with them. Humanity is the wild card because of their own diversity and ability to adapt.

Yes that argument goes both ways, but then the question is somewhat moot as there is no right and wrong, only perspectives. But every other race which has stuck to Reaper technology is dead and gone...

What if keeping the base only plays further into the Reapers hands?

This is the line that needs to be brought to attention. Was anybody else upset that Shepard doesn't give practical reasons for destroying the base? I know that the majority of the people on this forum have their own practical reasons for destroying the base that has little to do with morality. The collector base has no ethical value. Why is that the focus of destroying the base? I am not trying to play as a "good guy" and it hurts the character I'm trying to play as when I sometimes make this decision (it should focus more on the ramifications of giving it to Cerberus or reaper tech not because the base is "tainted").

Considering that the Collector Base was a place where hundreds of thousand of people died, I can very well understand his reasoning for destroying it. Yeah, it's a tainted place, like a concentration camp.

Yes, the end decision. It really makes sense that as 'the ultimate badass' I only get to choose between being loyal to cerberus (keeping the base) or 'humanity' (destroying the base). As thé ultimate badass (BW own words) I want to keep the base to myself, heck nobody can get there but me.

I don't see what's wrong with that line.

Paragon Shep thinks we can win, and he is concerned about what'll happen to society once we start seeing a base for the purpose of melting people as a potential asset.

The line implies that he's willing to risk all life in the galaxy just because of his ego.

It's no wonder one of Harbinger's lines is "You are arrogant Shepard".
