Knight you have such a nice short story, why not post a longer view from your Hawkes version. Could be rather interesting i guess.

Hmmm maybe I should have posted my "fan fiction" version seeing how the thread is going :) I found the personal story of Hawke made it a little easier to RP because the emotions are a little more familiar to me than the "save the world". The family-level-events especially hit close to home.

Devils Advocate: Of course there are things that break immersion but those aspects have been talked to death already.

my Hawke really hated Kirkwall and wanted to go back to Ferelden. Taked about it a lot, but I guess the ferry was out of order for all those years.

Ended up sailing with Isabella into the sunset.. or was that into a Qunari Dreadnought?.. I'm not entirely sure, Varric left that part out

My Hawke thinks everyone is acting silly and crazy and wants everyone to be peaceful and for there to be compromise, he looses his temper occasionally and tries to make Kirkwall a better place.

Some of your guys Hawkes are awesome, really well thought out. To make things short I played an Aggresive warrior who cared deeply for family and friends and was kind to them but when it came to busness he was often aggresive and short tempered. Honestly I wanted to say screw you to both the templars and the mages but I sided with the mages due to Bethany being in the circle.

Tristan Hawke had self conflicting views on the Mage / Templar conflict. He was a mage from Lothering that never really got along with his brother but did with his sister and they were pretty much best friends. They would practice magic in the southern wilds often and knew one of the chasind clans there. While in Lothering he fought templars scouting the forests to protect his family and he fought alongside them as well (wont go to much into that though, longish backstory I got)

Anyway his sister died and he got blamed for it by his family, he resented them for that. Hawke was always greedy and pretty much a bastard trying to seek out whatever benefited him most and in battle was cold, calculating and ruthless he cared little for his charges and all those around him - Partially due to hatred for the people of the world due to what they put his family through having to be on the run, partially due to the death of his sister which hit him hard and made him begin to stop caring about everything. However he never truely cared about the troubles of his people the mages and would never go out of his way to help them or care for their problems. Same with the unfortunate - But yeah he was powerhungry and greedy

Eventually Hawke mended things with his brother and things were going well until he died in the deep roads... Something else hawke never got over, as a result of losing his two siblings he never let anyone get close to him and any attempt to do so would cause him to get annoyed and angry with them.

Tristan joined the Red Irons upon arriving in Kirkwall, killing all that stood in their way. Bringing certain members of the Kirkwall nobility, the Raiders of the waking sea, the coterie, foreign ambassadors and many others to an early grave.

Over the years in Kirkwall Hawke began to obtain a respect for the Qunari and the Qun. He disliked it when his companions felt the need to express their views or attempt to suggest to him what to do and so basically didn'y like any of them save for Isabela, Varric and Merril. he pretty much had rivalry for all his companions and betrayed them all at every turn, handing fenris to his master etc.

My hawke also hated the chantry and didn't believe in the maker. He used the fortune he obtained in the deep roads to invest in businesses through Varric and the Merchants guild, hire informants  to get him information on important individuals within the city and tried to raise his political influance within the city, obtaining dirt on other nobles. (Hes a true bhelen)

In time, Hawke considered himself a true citizen of Kirkwall and called it home, he could never return to Ferelden. He had obtained much influance within Kirkwall being named champion and tried to move for the position of Viscount, only to find the Templar Order stood in his way =/ Finding out from the Seneshal that whoever currys the most favor with them will be Viscount, he sided with the Templars in the end.  Also because it meant less casualties and he knew of the Exalted March pending and didn't want all his work in Kirkwall to be for nothing and he had no problem killing innocents.

In the end, He for some reason currently unknown to me left his position as Viscount and fled with Merrill his LI (However in my Canon save I might romance isabela and travel the seas with her on her ship, idk im undecided atm)

So yeah, thats my Hawke... Pretty much the complete opposite person to my warden who was a devoted Andrastian, Goody Goody who would go out of his way to help people and ask nothing in return, and hold no hatred for anyone not named Arl Howe.

My Hawke, Connor was a (small r) rougish Mage, who was basically a good guy but occasionally impatient and lacking in judgement. He was anti-Chantry and interested in other races, nations mythologies - the elven pantheon and the Tevinter Old Gods. As such he was open to blood magic and to a lesser extent dealing with demons, though Anders gradually talked him out of the later.

Because of this (arguably naive) open-mindness he went along with Merrill's fascination with the Eluvian, he also wanted to see what happened with it and what it revealed. As he sits in the foothills of Sundermount (post game-end) watching Kirkwall burn, this is one of his many, many regrets.

He's a pretty noble heroic guy too, who's proudest achievement was the defeat of the Arishok. Because of his Han Solo-ish scoundrelness he managed to be fantastic friends with Varric and Isabella (who he loved as a BFF) as well as all other party members apart from the priggish bore Sebastian.

In the early days in Kirkwall he was pretty captivated by both Fenris and Anders for different reasons, though Anders ended as LI and though gutted and disgusted by the Chantry terrorism he let him live so he, as Merrill suggested, could try and fix what he initiated. Though this to him is another sign of his own weakness.

One of his most profound relationships was with Carver (Grey Warden) and their reconciliation was the only happy moment during the last hours in Kirkwall ("Don't make me cry you jackass"). Now, as he looks down on Kirkwall and the disaster he helped create surrounded by friends who's lives (in his mind) he ruined he's at rock bottom and uncertain where to go and what to do. A depressing and sad end (for now?) for the Champion of Kirkwall (but one of the reasons I loved this game so much).

I realize my initial post was skewed by my disappointment and bitterness towards many aspects of the game.  Now that I've cooled off, I can apologize for being a grumpy bear and post a more tempered review of my Hawke's views.

Merisa Hawke
Warrior

Merisa grew up in Lothering sneaking around and watching Templars and mercenaries when she could.  Her desire to learn to fight was born from her close relationship with Bethany who she helped avoid detection through their youths.  When Lothering was destroyed, Merisa was determined to lead her family to safety and away from the Blight.  Denerim, Orzammar, Redcliffe, anywhere not Blighted.  She wasn’t as close to her brother Carver, but his death to the Darkspawn rattled her and she was fairly numb when she accepted the witch’s task of delivering the amulet to Sundermount.

In Kirkwall, she set herself to work mostly for something to do so she could avoid grieving for Carver. She focused on climbing up to a better life for Bethany and her mother, truly the driving motivation behind her actions and choices that first year.  When Varric offered the chance to find riches that would surely buy a new estate regardless of their old one’s final result, she saw it as a way out of the slums they were living in with her uncle.

She grew to appreciate the dwarf’s sense of practicality and the mirth he occasionally showed with his own amusement for tales and stories.  Bartrand’s betrayal was infuriating, but her greatest failure was found on that expedition.  Bethany was corrupted by the Blight and, thanks to Anders, became a Grey Warden.  Her sister left, hopefully to survive the Joining, and Hawke’s heart was taken with her.  Her sister, closest friend, and confidant was gone and Merisa had to return home and tell their mother.

The next few years passed in a blur as the Hawkes recovered their former home. Despite his grumpiness, Merisa had expected her uncle to move in with them, but he never did.  She often spoke with Anders about Bethany, asking questions about the Circle and growing to support his desire to free the Circle Mages from the Templars more and more.

The qunari worried her, having remained in the city for so long, but there was something about their beliefs she found intriguing.  She wished to study the Qun, though she didn’t believe in its teachings and admitted to herself a desire to eradicate them from the city when she saw how they treated their mages and what they would have done to Bethany if she were a part of their society.  The Arishok’s refusal to abide by the city laws where he was a guest frustrated her and she was insulted when he refused her request for the fugitives clearly lying about their conversion in exchange for safe haven with the qunari.  She sought the Arishok out when they attacked Kirkwall and took joy in defeating his warriors before slaying him as well.

During the time leading up to this confrontation, she unexpectedly found herself romantically involved with Anders, unwilling to heed his warnings out of concern for his joined nature with Justice.  Hawke believed not only would she support Anders, but she would also help keep him in line when Justice grew out of control.

Merisa was pleased by her position as Champion, having finally attained the status that would have made her father, and Bethany, proud and able to give her mother a good life in her later years.  She befriended Merril through the years after bringing her to the alienage and though she liked the elf, and considered her a friend, she watched her warily.  Merril was a troublesome example of what a mage must deal with and how they can lead themselves to believe they can accept the aid of demons without consequence.

Anders increasingly aggressive stance against the Templars began to trouble her and she believed Justice, or Vengeance, was partly responsible. She agreed to help Anders gather he ingredients for a ritual to separate himself from the spirit, but was unable to get more details after materials were gathered and some supposedly stolen from the Chantry.  Despite her support of Anders, and still remembering Bethany’s worries as an apostate, she struggled as more and more mages turned to blood magic in Kirkwall.

She still believed the Knight Commander was wrong in her actions, feeling that Hawke and her friends were taking the proper course: hunting down and putting a stop to mages when they went rogue with blood magic or criminal activities.  Merisa believed being a mage wasn’t a crime, but dabbling in forbidden magics and using them against people was.  She believed in the Chantry’s view that magic was meant to serve man, never to dominate him, but that did not mean the Circle was meant to serve and never have their own freedom.  She continued to aid apostates who seemed to want only to live their lives and eventually learned of a resistance known as the Resolutionists.

From what Hawke gathered, they presented the path she believe in; Templar and Mage working together rather than at odds.  The Templars knew how to handle mages and they would continue to put a stop to those who got out of hand, but the Circle itself would police their own who dabbled with demons and practiced blood magic.  Hawke believed it was possible to offer mages freedom without them all turning to evil despite the more and more despicable acts she came across, including the death of her mother at a blood mage’s hands.  Though the group had captured Bethany from the Gray Wardens, Hawke went to them in hopes of offering additional aid and gaining her sister’s safety.

The Resolutionists proved a fruitless option as they were destroyed from within as soon as Hawke arrived by a blood mage within their ranks, further embittering Hawke.  She grew angry that so many mages were turning to forbidden magic, but viewed it as desperation for freedom from the oppressive Templars and Knight Commander Meredith.  When she later confronted Meredith and Orsino during yet another argument, she intended to appeal to the Grand Cleric to remove Meredith from command of the Templars and convince Orsino to allow a thorough search of the Circle.  It was not to be.

In the greatest act of betrayal she could imagine, Anders revealed that he had used her, the woman he claimed to love, to lay the foundation for a destructive spell within the Chantry.  The mage detonated the spell, killing the Grand Cleric and everyone within the building.  As Meredith enacted the Rite of Annulment, Hawke defended the Circle as being innocent of the crime.  Her views had not changed.  An apostate did not do this.  Bethany would never have done such a thing.  A mage driven mad with anger and desperation, who had used forbidden magic, had done this and, as with so many others she had hunted down, Merisa stated justice, ironically, had to be served.  She killed Anders before racing to the Gallows to stop the Rite of Annulment.

Bethany rejoined her sister and the Hawkes fought together to stop Orsino when he too resorted to blood magic in desperation.  With the Head Enchanter dead, Hawke hoped to talk reason to Meredith, but found herself in combat against the Knight Commander as well.  In the end, Hawke set fire to her estate and left the city with Varric, Bethany, and her mabari.  There was nothing left for her in Kirkwall and she hoped she’d never see the city for the rest of her life.

Nóra Hawke

Personality: Diplomatic and gets things done; hardly ever cracks a joke, but as the acts continue she lightens up a little.

Talents: Blood and Force magic

Stance: BIG mage supporter

Nóra is a fairly serious woman with a good heart. However, she takes no bull****. Carver's second child act is stomped on, Fenris' hatred towards mages is not tolerated and Merrill may as well have never left her clan because Nóra does everything she can to sabotage the elf's plans for the mirror. Nóra has been running her entire life, and wants nothing more than to make a home like the one she left behind in Lothering; but she realizes that day may never come. So, Nóra makes sure her family and friends are safe, and will do anything to keep from losing them. Her father’s death changed something inside the mage – witnessing Templars brutally murder Malcom Hawke instilled a deep hatred for the Chantry and its order of knights. When Anders blew up the Chantry, Nóra only saw it as a means to an end, and ran away with him.

(Added my own twist to Malcom Hawke's death because I thought it fueled my Hawke's anger.)

Athenia Hawke - Warrior, DPS.(most of my play throughs were like this, even when I played a mage)

Athenia used to be a funny prankster, but since leaving Lothering, she has changed considerably. After the death of her brother/sister, and her mother's constant reminding that it was her fault they were dead, her heart hardened.

She would occasionally find comfort in the arms of one of her trusted companions, but usually when it got too serious, she would break it off.

With that said, she was a true friend and would defend her friends fiercely, as she saw them as an extension of her family. If they betrayed her, however, she took it personally and would turn bitter and vengeful against them.

She supported the mages, but felt blood mages were abominations that should be wiped from the planet. Her relationship with Anders was precarious because of this, but their agreement about blood mages gave enough ground that a relationship would sometimes be possible. However, his betrayal and lack of trust cut her to the quick, and she responded in kind.

Isabella was always a good friend, someone to share intimate secrets with. She was catty, and would occasionally irk Athenia, but she always seemed to make up for it. Her conscience should have forced Isabella to kill Castillion... but she saw the end coming and knew they would have to make a quick escape... having a ship and an able Captain works nicely into her plan...

Fenris raised McMoody, McBroody to an art form. Always angry, his fire drew Athenia to him like a moth to a flame. He was someone she could share her anger and frustrations with, but could never get truly close to. Angry-sex only goes so far, after all. At some point, love and compassion need to come into play. She defends him against slavers, Hadrianna and Denarius because he is, after all, family. And for once, her family doesn't stop her from slaughtering those that would take them from her.

Sebastian takes and takes, but never really seems to give. His hollow promises begin to fall on deaf ears after a while. Whether he supports Athenia or not, she doesn't really care. But, he does have a really nice bow.

Merrill is a child, in Athenia's eyes, who needs to be brought into the real world. She blocks her every attempt to repair the mirror, and sees her anger toward her much like she sees Carver's anger of being a younger brother. She bears it, knowing she is doing what is best for her, even though Merrill doesn't realize it herself.

Varric is the one person she can truly be herself around. He is non-judgmental and always has a quick one-liner to lift her spirits. He listens attentively and understands where she is coming from. After Varric rescues his brother and becomes his guardian, their bond strengthens. He finally understands what its like for Athenia to carry the burden of her entire family square on her shoulders. If only it weren't for Bianca.....

Aveline's black and white attitude served as a good check and balance for Athenia. Athenia saw many things as "how will it affect me or my family" and Avenline made her look at the bigger picture. Should Aveline have provoked the Arishok? Probably not. But it was coming anyway, better to get it over with and pick up the pieces, then draw it out any longer. She was happy when Aveline found love again, but jealous too. Athenia knew she would never be as happy as her, and that hurt.

The Arishok would have made a fine mate for Athenia. Strong, sensible, dedicated and he saw the Qun as his family that needed protected. She respected him, and the fact that his decisions were based on what was best for his family, not what was best for everyone outside of it. He was emotionally unavailable, so she wouldn't have to reach deep down and reveal herself very often to him. This appealed to her. And, lets face it, he was hot.

Overall, Athenia supports the Templars, but does not support the "cleansing" of the circle. She believes there are good mages worth saving, and will always protect a mage that gives themselves up and submits to questioning. It is not the Templar's job to rid the world of mages, but to separate the bad ones from the good. Athenia is no fool, she understands there is something else going on in Kirkwall, something that is driving the madness, but she has neither the time nor inclination to investigate. She needs to get what's left of her family, immediate and extended, out of the city before it all comes crashing down.

My hawke could have solved the mage problem if they let me. Meredith and Orsino where two extremes, easily replaced if Allister had the balls to make me vicount. But towards the end I felt like the game was forcing me to choose (while doubiously giving me the option not to pick sides)... and then Anders walks in and it's like CHOOSE NOW.

I sided with the Templars because of what Anders did (I mean how can you side with the mages after that), and Averline and Fenris saying it needed a response. To me the best part of the game was kicking the Aristoks ass in a duel.. arrogant ******.

You know Alistair can't actually do that, right? Kirkwall isn't part of Ferelden, it's not his domain. As King of Ferelden he commands respect, but he has no real authority in the Free Marches.

On-topic: I've played the game through a few times now, but what will most likely be my canon-Hawke works out like this:

Templars: They ****ing suck. Keran is okay and Cullen is something of a question mark, but the potential for abuse is so incredibly, blatantly obvious that frankly I'd be surprised if mages weren't being raped. Mages need to be policed, but zealous bigots are not the people for the job.

Mages: Given what they have to put up with, it's no wonder that they turn to demons and blood magic. With the templars dogging them at every corner, what other options do they have? Blood magic is the only magic templars can't defend against and the only magic the chantry doesn't control through its monopoly on lyrium. No matter what danger they may present, taking away basic rights like freedom and privacy is not the the answer.

The Chantry: Is a throbbing cancer on Thedas. It has far too much power and it needs to be siginifcantly weakened, if not destroyed utterly. It controls the populace through fear and breeds bias and ignorance. Not cool.

People: Meredith is a paranoid nutter who should've been packed off to a desk job in Orlais long ago, my Hawke has no problems standing up to her and eventually stabbing her in the face. Orsino is a corrupt weakling who has failed in protecting the interests of those he represents. Elthina is a biogt with nice manners and a coward to boot, she had the power to effect change and opted to do nothing, she deserves what she gets. The Viscount was doing his best to keep peace in a city that was falling apart, he's the only decent politician in the entire goddamn city. My Hawke likes and feels sorry for him.

Qunari: Can take their precious Qun and shove it. Honor without choice is worthless. If people volunteer to be stripped of their free will because they need "purpose", then that's their business. But the Qunari make no secret of their intention to violently convert all of Thedas and any attempt at peace clearly a waste of time. They may not be monsters, but they aren't nice by any stretch of the term and Saemus is an idiot for considering himself their friend. Qunari don't have friends and don't want them and they make that painfully clear. My Hawke was of a mind to go ahead and turn the Tome of Koslun over to the Tevinters just to spite the Qunari for being utter ****knuckles.

Companions: Aveline and Sebastian are preachy, nagging bores. Fenris equally so. Merrill is adorable but infuriating, while Hawke could care less about blood magic he wishes she'd stay away from demons, especially since she freely admits she knows how dangerous they are. Varric is an cool guy, eh tells awesome stories and doesn't afraid of anything. Ditto Isabela. My Hawke doesn't care that she stole the tome, she's a freaking pirate after all, that's what they do. She's loyal to Hawke and that's all that matters. He doesn't like the Qunari anyway. Anders is sex on legs and Hawke wants that abomination **** in a BIG way. The self-sacrifice, tortured past and determination to make things better for his people are also major turn-ons. Hawke is somewhat pissed that Anders lied to him at the end but he was able to look past it because in his eyes, the destruction of the Chantry was necessary, right, and an extremely pleasant surprise.

There's a secret part of the game. If you can survive that fight, usually through a cheat code. You unlock a hidden area of the game, called Kirkwall. There's about 50-60 hours of bonus gameplay at least!

I don't have a Hawke, BioWare does.

From the bad, inaccurate paraphrasing to the passive dialog to the large time skips where Hawke does things you can't contol to the railroading I don't know how anyone could consider Hawke their character.

Acantha Hawke - Reaver
Creed - Doesn't suffer fools
Loves - Family and her big axe, Bloom

Acantha has a low level of tolerance for many things. That includes her aquaintances and Kirkwall. She only backs down for family. She's not the type to get close to, nor anger if one wants to keep his or her head where it belongs. No one can explain why Hawke is the way she is, nor can they pin point when she began to change. But change she has, and for the worse if one takes into consideration her inability to act with propriety and diplomacy.

Acantha's greatest regret is not killing Cullen for dragging Bethany to the circle. Her hatred for the Templars is absolute, and upon Anders blowing up the Chantry, fully supported him, even though she's not particularly fond of him. What occured afterwards was a highly satisfying exercise in spilling Templar blood.

I agree. Keep it in the "bash" threads.
Now, onto my stories.
Lets see if I can keep this succinct.

Ingrid Hawke (Warrior: Two-Handed/Berserker/Reaver) (My first, stumble through the game, play through).

Story: Ingrid was never a very serious person, always ready with a quip or joke. However, she took the safety of her family very seriously. She mourned Carver's death and took the full brunt of her mother's anger. In Kirkwall, this need to defend her family drove everything she did. She was very close with her sister and listened to what she had to say. She even followed her mother's advice to leave Bethany behind when she went into the deep roads. Returning to see Bethany marched off to the Circle was like a kick in the gut, but she took solace knowing that her sister was safe. In the following years she had a brief fling with the pirate woman, Isabella. However, she refused to push the issue of a real relationship and things never got serious (I failed to complete the romance because I chose the wrong options, despite Varric's epilogue).
Ingrid took the death of her mother particularly hard, blaming herself for killing the wrong man and letting the killer roam free until he took her mother's life. After that, she developed more of an edge to her personality. Still jovial, most of the time, but she stopped putting up with anyone's crap or attempts to fast-talk her. In the middle of the square she flat out threatened Meridith when the Knight-Commander made a veiled threat against Bethany's safety.
It was her concern for Bethany in the Circle that led to her supporting the Mages more often than not. While she would have prefered a middle ground, the threat that her sister could be made Tranquil at any time hung heavily over her. When Anders blew up the Chantry and cowardly asked Ingrid to kill him or let him go, she responded "No, you started this and you're going to help me fix it." After the battle she fled with her companions into the hills and eventually disappeared.

Companions:
Isabella: Ingrid was enfatuated with the freedom loving pirate and was more than releaved to see her return with the artifact. She dueled the Arishok for Isabella, but it seems that the gesture was lost on her as their relationship didn't progress beyond that of lovers.

Anders: Being sympathetic to the situation with the mages, Ingrid found a friend and ally in Anders. Sadly, she was also oblivious to his lack of control over Vengence. She nearly killed him when he manipulated their friendship to allow him time to destroy the chantry, but felt it better to make him own up to his action rather than let him take the coward's way out.

Avaline: Due to her Templar husband, Ingrid didn't trust Avaline for a while. However, after helping her expose the former guard captain's corruption, she found Avaline to be a stalwart friend. Helping her get over herself and woo Donic was something that also strengthened their bond.

Merril: Ingrid liked Merril, well enough. She didn't approve of her use of blood magic, but she seemed to be responsible in it's use. When it came to the eluvian, however, she couldn't condone the risk and refused to help. When the Keeper died and the was slaughtered during their escape, Hawke couldn't help but give her an "I told you so." speech (okay, there isn't one in the game, but it seriously needs it.)

Varric: Best friends for life. Nuff said.

Fenris: If there was anyone she met in her years in Kirkwall she despised it was Fenris. His violent hatred of mages made her keep him as far away from Bethany as she could and barley let him out of his mansion. (Yeah, I didn't use him at ALL in that play through). Even overtures of friendlyness in the form of gifts were rejected by the bitter, whiney elf, forcing Ingrid to write him off as a lost cause (I was unaware gifts were affected by friendship/rivalry levels) and used the Tevinter sword just to spite him. When they confronted each other in the courtyard, Ingrid enjoyed spilling his guts on the marbel.

Other Things: Ingrid didn't care one way or another about the Qun, though the thought of giving up all free will because some book told you what your life's role was going to be was ludicous to her. Due to her relationship woes with Isabella, Ingrid was a regular patron of The Blooming Rose where she would discuss her issues with the elf woman she favored.

Current Game
Shayla "Marian" Hawke (I messed up in the char creation and forgot to change her name) (Rogue - Archery/Assassin/Specialist) (If you can't tell, I prefer theme builds rather than "best" builds)

Story So Far: Shayla seems incapable of taking anything seriously. Always cracking jokes no matter the situation. The only time she gets serious is when her family or friends are at stake. She also has a habit of never doing anything for free, despite her family's newfound wealth. Kirkwall has become her home and while distrustful of her companions at first, she's just as protective of them as her family.

[b]Comanions:[/b} Isabella's freedom loving spirit has Shayla enwraptured and she entertains the idea of leaving Kirkwall behind to sail the seas, but she can't while she still has to look after her mother. If she remarries, like she says she might, then she'll bring it up with Isabella. She wants more out of her relationship with the pirate, but it looks like it's going to take some work.

Shayla keeps Anders at arms length. Vengence began to manifest in a simple conversation and that lack of control gives her pause. She would also prefer not to get mixed up in the whole Templar/Mage thing at this time. She does, however, owe Anders for saving Bethany, and that will probably influence certain matters down the line.

Avaline was a mixed bag for Shayla. A guard and someone with a strong sense of law would have naturally grated against Shayla's rebellious streak. However, in the years since arriving in Kirkwall, the two have found a lot of common ground and begun to build up a friendship.

Shayla looks the other way with Merril's blood magic. She things the elf is cute, if naive, but she's not going to coddle her because of it. Life is hard and she thinks Merril needs to learn that. Still, so long as it doesn't activly hurt anyone, what could be so bad about helping her restore an old artifact.

Varric is a great drinking partner and someone Shayla can bounce jokes off of. Verbal sparring is their downtime fun and the two get along great. It's just a shame that Shayla can't take him on more adventures. (Having another ranged rogue in the group seems like too much, for me).

Shayla's relationship with Fenris is best described as temultuous. She was initially suspicious of this elf who would manipulate her into attacking his enemies. However, she worked past that and tries to look out for him, despite his constant rebuffs of her efforts.  Yet, they occasionally agree on other points, such as slavers. When Denarious' men attacked again she immediatly sought them out and slaughtered them. It seems like their relationship will never reach a real conclusion.

So, in a nutshell, those are my two games so far. Pretty similar to each other. I'm eagerly awaiting a chance to play my devout warrior/templar so I can rivalmance Merril. :D
I wonder if I should write short stories to flesh these Hawkes out....

I've played multiple versions of Hawke, though "my" Hawke is a female Mage with a huge problem with authority. She's very aggressive (though not cruel. She'll usually avoid killing if at all possible), and hella snarky. Living her entire life as an apostate, she's used to being on the run. She's very reactive. She's smart, but planning ahead is not something she very often sees a point in doing. That's why she never particularly viewed Lothering/Ferelden as home. Kirkwall is starting to feel a bit like home. At the very least, all her stuff is here, and it'd be a pain to move without a real good reason. She actually kind of likes the fact that she can be involved in problem-solving for this city. People actually care about what she thinks and does and ask her to help them out.

She basically summed up her own personality fairly well in the conflict with Feynriel's slavers "I'd be a terrible slave. I talk too much. *holds knife to guys throat* Also, I do this." Also, some time later (ironically, in the other Feynriel quest) she'll quip "Submission has never been my strong suit" That's why she herself will never turn herself in to the Templars even when, with basically every freaking other mage in Kirkwall turning into an abomination, she can sometimes see their point. She knows that the way the Kirkwall Circle is running things she'd almost certainly be made Tranquil 3 seconds after walking through the door.

After her father's death she had to be the one who kept the family safe from Darkspawn/Templars, etc. If it ever came down to it she would sacrifice herself to save Bethany with no hesitation. Bethany was her baby sister, and sweet. Hawke was never sweet. After Bethany's death... she'd never admit it, but Hawke actually does accept the guilt that her mother/Carver put on her for that.

Speaking of Carver, she essentially stopped speaking to him completely when he joined the Templars (and they weren't on the best of terms before that, even in Ferelden). Ask her, and she'll say that she hates his guts. But after a long while (years), she'll understand his decision, and even recognize that he is sort of helping her from afar by being a Templar. He can be a force for good inside the order, living up to his namesake by being a check on Meredith's extremist "kill them all" policy. Their own personal issues aside, she knows that Carver doesn't hate mages (and actually doesn't even hate her).

She has high rivalry with practically everyone (Aveline especially - that authority thing), but would never ever abandon her friends. She doesn't trust abomination Anders as far as she could through him, but she sympathizes with his revolutionary cause. She knows he's right when he tells her that other mages just want the freedom that she has, and she's fully aware that the reason she's not in the Gallows is at least 85% dumb luck. Actually, the moment when she asked Anders if the Circle was really that bad, and he responded that the number one cause of death for mages wasn't demons but suicide, that was the turning point, not just for my Hawke, but for me, personally. After that I *really* started paying attention to how the mages are treated, and recognizing that (at least in Kirkwall), they really are slaves. I can't side with the Templars any more after that.

My Hawke decapitated Isabella took the tome of Koslun from her dead hands and left with orny ary for some sun and strict ideological reeducation in Par Vollen. Thankfully one of the first things he was given under the Qun was a new name.

Same playthrough here. Par Vollen should be packed with frustrated Hawkes by now.
