They're not Blizzard (who transcended and redefined RTSs and MMOs).

Blizzard didn't redefine RTS games with Starcraft, it's very similar game to C&C or Dune 2, just look at it's contemporaries like Total Annihilation or Homeworld, which innovated with 3D and other aspects and got better reviews as a result.

Interesting point since you mention C&C, Command and Conquer was pooped on by some publisher that got involved with it, I forget which.

Also, I was playing Crysis this evening and it kept doing DRM stuff and wouldn't work - and you know what, I tried Crysis 2 and it has had annoying changes implemented.

It's almost as if some purulent disgusting worm in a suit somewhere is addicted to making developers screw up games they publish so they can put their awesome input on a report or resume somewhere. Almost, obviously that's totally something I imagined or something.

In fact, it seems like lots of the game franchises I've enjoyed have got better and better and then they get bought out and in some way stuffed up.

I know it seems like I digress, but I feel that somehow these random thoughts are related to "what lies in DA's future"

I'll leave you to join the dots, and extrapolate DAs future.

(Luckily, I think publishers ruining game franchises is self-correcting behaviour, as we wil soon see).

^^^^ Hopefully EA see's their profit margin shrink a little on DA2 and gives BioWare more development time and money for the next game, probably wont happen tho.

I have bad feeling that they will continue the path of Mortal Kombat/Dynasty Warrior with short unrelated episodes of personal story.

You're crazy! Dune 2, I played that game! It was just a C&C clone. Total Annihilation, while fun, was also the same old same old RTS where two opposing sides fought with very similar, if not identical, units.

StarCraft had three unique races which were well balanced without one clearly being the best.

StarCraft changed the entire genre ever since it arrived in 98.

DA is going downhill. Blame whover you want. EA or BIOWARE. DA 2 didnt even come close to what DA:O was. The writers tried, they really did. But it didnt work.

See.. the thing is there are people who liked the story. The story itself isn't the reason DA is going downhill. The real issue is that they released a game with such glaringly obvious failures.

1)  Hundreds of bugs and stability issues.
2) Incomplete and bugged quests.
3) Unbelievable and immersion breaking mechanics and implementation, such as men in full plate clad armor raining from the sky.
4) Unimaginative and reused maps.

and many, many other real issues. Story complaints are just a matter of opinion and there are plenty of people who loved the main story but hated all the brainless and half thought out design choices.

Honestly, I thought it was more of a general consensus that Act 3 was just a mess. :/

I'd like to point out that both 1&2 of your points are also true about Dragon Age Origins.  Hundreds of small and larger bugs, to this day, incomplete and bugged quests as well.

Before buying Origins I read a few reviews..  It seemed all the critics were saying, "A lot of bugs.  Buy it anyway."  And despite all the bugs, it won so many awards, while those bugs were still fresh in everyone's mind.

DA2 is a fun game.  I like it.  In fact, I like it more than I expected to.  But it's just not in the same league as DAO.  I'm not sure an RPG as good as DAO will ever be made again.  The bar was set WAY too high with it.

If you're not a fan of RPGs, there are plenty of things not to like about it.  Just like, well, if you're not a fan of ninja games, Ninja Gaiden has a lot of things not to like about it.

I, for one, have never heard anyone successfully defend it. Just general 'it was alright.'

I haven't seen anyone successfully attack it.  Just a general "it sucked."
