this question is about the north american version of the collector's edition (the one numbered from 1 to 62,000 i think?). amazon's description says:

"Baldur's Gate II: Collector's Edition includes four custom CD-ROMs, featuring the complete Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn in a jewel case. Additionally, the Collector's Edition features a special bonus disc containing exclusive weapons and armor as well as tracks from the original game soundtrack; a cloth map displaying the Kingdom of Amn in vivid color; a set of eight collectible Character Trading Cards (one of two sets randomly distributed, 16 trading cards in all); and a Black Isle Studios writing tablet, all appropriately ensconced in a hinged, book-style serialized box."

now some people claim they have 16 trading cards in their collector's edition. if this is true, how did it happen?  did they buy 2 copies that had different sets of 8 cards and just put them together? if you have a collector's edition, please help me solve this puzzle.

sorry for the double post, but it has been about a month since I made my original post. is it safe to assume that nobody knows how many cards were originally in the BG2 collector's edition?

Have no idea what you are talking about... this forum is for the computer game.

The Collector's Edition had no cards in it. It did have an extra CD but I did not really look into it, the CD I mean.

A number of years ago, someone asked the same question on the Gamebanshee Forums. One of the forums members ended up writing Gaider and got a response. He said there were 16.

or, does anybody know how to reach david gaider?  i would write to him myself if i only knew his contact information.

Gosh. I don't even remember there being collectible cards at all-- never mind whether there are differences in the North American versus the European version. Did I really answer this question? Evidently it was before my brain became addled.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Apparently you did: 10 years ago. Unless someone faked an email from you...

According to the post, you also replied: "We'd like that too, hopefully" When the writer requested that Jan Jansen get new abilities such as "Solar Repellent" and "Turnip Bio-Boosting Brews." Does that sound like you- pre-brain addle?

:P

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'm sure we understand. Thanks for all the wonderful work over the years.

Cheers,

A.

On the frontside of my European BG2 Collector's Edition it says 'including 19 collectible cards*, classis style t-shirt, Bonus In Game Item, and sound track CD, postcards and art poster.'

* As for the 19 cards, I haven't counted them, since they're still in the plastic wrap that they came in :)

I feel a very big tint of jealousy I didn't know the game yet back in those days (I didn't even have a PC back then). How I'd love to have a Baldur's Gate t-shirt on my chest and poster on the wall *turns red with envy*:o

I should point out that I answered the OP before this thread was posted since they messaged me about the CE, questioning my assertion in another thread here that I had 16 cards in my version of the CE. They already had the answer but wanted verification from someone else, I guess. That link above, showing the pictures should finally put this to rest.

OP asked me to chime in (a while ago, I only just saw the pm). I wrote the text for those cards back in the day. Dug out my own set, and there are 16 plus the Black Isle Studios logo card. The picture linked above appears to be missing the troll lair. The numbers below are arbitrary, they didn't have an order.
1. Aerie
2. Korgan Bloodaxe
3. Imoen
4. Nalia de'Arnise
5. Haer Dalis
6. Jan Jansen
7. Jaheira
8. Keldorn Firecam
9. Githyanki
10. Stone Golem
11. Troll
12. Umber Hulk
13. The Planar Sphere
14. Crypt of the Demilich
15. A Troll Lair
16. Temple of Lathander
17. Black Isle Studios logo

I will caution, though, that I got my cards from a pile they sent us, not from a boxed copy. I suppose it's possible that they didn't include the lair card even though it was printed, but that seems unlikely.

Lukas, those are the exact cards I have in my set. The Black Isle card is an extra (the 17th) card. You made me pull out my box, again, just to verify this. So yeah, you're right, they are missing a card in the set shown in the picture.

"A Troll Lair" text: It is hard to find an equal for the devastation caused by an infestation of trolls. They commonly lay claim to convenient lairs and consume whatever wanders near, often beginning with the previous inhabitants.

The quote on the card is: "Oust a scourge of Trolls? Are you mad? Let's purge the night of darkness while we're at it, or the day of light. Walk on, girl." -- An unheralded mercenary

Fun times.

Yeah, that's the one. But I wouldn't have been surprised if it was different than I guessed. Interplay tended to spring things like this on us. I can't explain why the European version might claim to have more cards, for example. These are the only ones I wrote up. But some promotions we never even knew about until they were over.

You want to talk about a bughunt for obscure BG merch, there used to be a smith in Calgary who ran Valentine Armories (he's making armor for Hollywood these days), and I was idly browsing their gallery a bunch of years back and was stunned to see a shield bearing the Baldur's Gate skull and tears logo. At the time they said it'd been made for an official contest that I never even heard of. That's the grail right there. Anyone know where that ended up, I wonder?

At this point, I'm just going to trust Kevin. A lot of interesting information was given in this thread, but from this thread alone, there is curently little other basis for us believing that there are actually 16 cards in each boxed Collector's Edition. Here's why:

It has been so long that David Gaider can't remember that there were even cards. Obviously, that's not enough information to determine how many cards there were, especially in a specific version of the Collector's Edition.

Lukas Kristjanson remembers designing 16 cards, but the cards he got were not from a boxed version. The information he provided at best indicates that there were 16 cards total, but he doesn't explicitly state that each boxed Collector's Edition contains 16 cards. For all we know, each box may only have contained 8 cards instead of the total 16 he designed. We have information only on what cards were created; not how they were packaged.

CoM Solaufein provided a link above with a fan who took a picture of his Collector's Edition. Assuming that the photographer didn't take cards from another box and combine them with his, the picture provides some proof that there are at least 15 cards. Since there were 16 cards in total, and Amazon's description says there were 8 in each box, it's pretty clear that the photographer merely lost one card, since the only possibilities are that there were 8 cards or 16 (not 15).

Ultimately though, it is still Kevin's set that provides the true proof. Only with Kevin do we know that he didn't mix the contents of another box with his Collector's Edition (right Kevin?). And we do know that Kevin's box had 16 cards, so if any Collector's Edition has less than 16 cards, and unless Kevin had special access to the Collector's Edition (as an employee of Bioware) that other customers didn't, we know those Collector's Editions must be missing cards.

So, based on the best available evidence, I guess I will assume that there were originally 16 cards in each North American Collector's Edition, not including the Black Isle Studios logo card.

I wonder why nobody's selling the European Collector's Edition though. Is it because it was much rarer than the North American version? It sure would be nice to have a BG2 t-shirt...

I didn't lose any cards. Every card has been in the box. This is a preorder collectors edition to be more precise.

Sorry for referring to you in the third person; it didn't occur to me that the person who posted the picture was you!

What is the preorder Collector's Edition? Is there a non preorder Collector's Edition? Do they share the same numbering (1 to 62,000)? I assumed based on your edition's numbering that it was the same edition as Kevin's. If that's the case, why do you have 15 cards (not including the logo card) and why does Kevin have 16?

Are all 16 from the same box, or are some of the 16 taken from another numbered box from 1 to 62000?

I'm not an employee of BioWare, just to clear that up. I've been a volunteer moderator for both Interplay (before Bio's forums popped up) and BioWare, going on over a decade. I bought my CE at retail.
