I usually keep willpower at the base amount, or I might put a few points into it during Awakening, and just pile on the +mana regen gear. My bards usually keep Song of Valor up and as soon as I can afford Staff of the Magister Lord, my mage wardens get that.

If I happen to be playing an arcane warrior, willpower stays at 20 (base amount), and they'll equip the Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate set (+4 mana regen), Duncan's Sword (+4 mana regen) and The High Regard of House Dace (+2 mana regen, +50 mana). Of course, all of that is needed to keep shimmering shield up permanently, but still...

I've found that fireball works wonders against archers, or any aoe immobilization spell. If not, I'll usually hit one with something like crushing prison while I go after another.

Just in case it helps some other anti-potion players, I've had much better luck w/ Spell Shield by also taking Mana Drain.

:S mages are the most dangerous enemies in this game. with the exception of boss fights i can't think of anything harder to come up against than mages.

It is fun to use mana clash though just to hear the "ding!" :P.

Mana Clash is not foolproof, it can get resisted in nightmare.

There are plenty of ways to counter mages without using Mana Clash. When dealing with mages you need to think offensively and defensively: offensively, you need to disable/distract them, so you can finish them off without hassle. Defensively you need to have someone with Spell Shield, Dispel Magic, Force Field and Spirit Healer talents - these are the top spells that help mitigate the effects of enemy magic (yes you -need- to expect enemy mages to be able cast a few things before dying, unless you're not playing nightmare in which case Mana Clash > all and this whole discussion is moot point). Spell Shield counters powerful one-hit spells like Crushing Prison, Dispel Magic removes burn effects/curses and Force Field is perhaps the strongest spell in the game defensive-wise. Morrigan should have no trouble getting all these spells + nukes/shifter forms by mid-level, Wynne however should just get Mana Clash and save herself the trouble.

A Blood Mage with Blood Wound should have little trouble dealing with enemy mages , though by the time you get the spell most of the game's dangers will have passed and NPC's will be alot stronger anyway. Shapeshifters and Dog can 1-hit KO most mages easily. So can Oghren and Shale when built correctly, but for them the deed will be more costly. Templars like Alistair can effectively disable just about every mage except Gaaxkang using Holy Smite. A bowyer Leliana can one-shot mages, and she can bring down most dangerous ones by herself with some micromanagement (and some flask-throwing). Spells like Fireball followed up with the three cone spells (and a hit or two) can bring down most mages, except special ones like Howe's guardians and Gaaxkang. Basically most burst damage attacks work very well against mages.

Revenants are one of the few mobs more dangerous than mages, since technically these things don't use mana.

If you don't have these spells you can just blanket the area with persistent AoEs and force the mages to fight you in a corner, where they go down easy. Or distract them with force field. Or use traps on them. Or have 4 people with poison-making rank 1 bombard them with remarkably cheap 60+ damage flasks. Or watch them get pulverized by someone with Anti-magic. Etc, etc.

Very sound advice. And I do play the game on Nightmare. I always bring Leliana with me. Any advice on what archer talents she should have? I already plan to get her to have Ranger as a second specialization [although one problem is that in the PC version (I have the Ultimate Edition) the summoned creatures don't seem to have the overwhelm talent, so that would've helped...].

I also might bring Shale along, so any advice on him in case I do? I've only had him for one Nightmare playthrough and I don't know what are good ways to build his attributes/talents.

I get this problem too. That's one of the main reasons I made this topic, lol. :P
