As to the AW/SH point the OP brought up, the healing spells are instant cast, they don't suffer from spell pushback
Also the SH life regen is ideal for melee combat pretty much.  I think  a well built AW/SH is going to be pretty effective.

As far as AW goes, certain spells that are typically escape utility or desperate finishers up close (Mind Blast, Cone spells) can be more useful in a frontline cavalier way.

Mind Blast, according to the Toolset Wiki, resets threat. From an AW perspective, this could reset threat after unloading a bunch of close range damage/debuff spells and letting the tank pick it up with a stance.

After watching the Giantbomb video with Mordecai the Mage dying very fast, the toughness of the AW and willingness to engage in melee might provide excellent utility.

In the same vein, a mage under fire could pop into spider and poison someone or entangle an attacker and quickly return to normal to start hurling spells without a hitch. I think in the end it's a "flavor" decision based on the player's taste. Although it requires some micro-management, I can see the uses of a quick role change for a mage. (Also, I know a lot of this is subject to the combat mechanics we aren't yet aware of).

I expect the blood mage / spirit healer, as godly as it may seems now, to leech a lot of your mana.
