*assassinate*

Oh Fenris, looks like you're dead.

That scene was hilarious to me.  He died in one hit.

I sided with the mages, Fenris turned on me.  I tried to talk him out of it, he wanted to fight, so I killed him.  I never used him much anyway, so I guess this is the result of not having his loyalty.

You can do the same thing to Anders if you side with the templars & don't shank him.

And Merrill if you side with the templars and don't have her friendship/rivalry high enough.

Only if you rivaled him instead of friended him and you have the 1.02 patch. You can't convince him to help you fight with the templars if you friended him.

Yep, I lol'd at it too. I was saying, "Fenris, YOU DUN GOOFED" as my warrior Hawke took him down in about three hits.

I meant the assassinate part. Poor guy folds faster than Superman on laundry day.
I don't think you should ever be able to talk him into staying if you side with the templars, it's just too out of character for him.

Rivalry still isn't fixed in the 1.02 patch, anyway.

It's not just the possibility of siding with the templars that's bugged. The game fails to recognize the rivalmance entirely once the chantry goes boom.

How much exactly is needed to ensure he stays at your side? The first time I had 100% friendship and he never wavered. The second time I had mostly friendship and I had to convince him at the gallows. Also, i noticed a couple of different lines when the decision point comes. Sometimes I've seen "After all the evil that magic has wrought you would still support them?" Other times it's "The mages here would become magisters. Do not let them."

Fenris left me at like 75%ish friendship. But I was able to easilly convince him to come back later By doing a "Come on, you know its more fun on my side!"

Not sure what was funnier. That or Meredith's "Whatever." when he said he was swapping back.Image IPB

Yeah Meredith was so far gone by that time, Qun following Penguins she would've accepted as long as they kept biting mage ankles.

There is a massive amount of companion stupidity in this game. And actually, it's not just the companions. I lost count of the times when characters turned on me despite the fact I was here to help them. Sigh.

Ah, sorry for misunderstanding. Some of the companions turn out surprisingly flimsy when they turn on you, but the opposite is true as well. Still rather surprised at how much damage Isabela inflicted during the Fade part of Feynriel's quest despite he always being the only one to die in regular combat.

My favorite was how you can have Hawke publicly proclaim support for mages, grudingly accept Meredith's quest to investigate the rumors of mage/templar conspiracy, and figure the whole pro-mage thing would make Hawke appear to be the impertial investigator.

"Oh, hey gu-"
"WE KNOW YOU'RE WORKING FOR MEREDITH! DIE, DOG!"

Followed up by Bethany getting kidnapped, so they obviously knew who Hawke was.

Varric can be tough in the fade dream too. Bianca has a hell of a kick if you don't move quick enough.

Well Fenris, Anders and Merrill are personally invested in the conflict. If Hawke hasn't won them over it would be stupid for them not to turn against her.

Fenris: Free mages lead to disaster, but hey, I'll risk my life to help you break as many as you can out of the Gallows.

Merrill: Sure I'll help you slaughter all the mages. Some of them are rumored to be blood mages. They're dangerous.

Anders Justice Anders: Justice for the mages! Oh, you want to kill them all, sounds like fun.

If your friendship or rivalry is high enough then either Hawke's been working to change their beliefs or they care enough about her to go along despite their personal hangups. There's a lot of legitimate complaints to be made about the game, but I don't think this is one of them.

Merrill never does agree with your viewpoints to kill all the mages. She agrees to stand with you, that's a different thing.

Um, yes.

I was pointing out it would be silly for them to go along with Hawke, if Hawke hasn't given them reason. Sorry if that didn't come across clearly. ; )

I have the quaking suspicion that one (or a few) of the writers for Bioware are sadomasocistic.  It would explain why in most bioware games, people are effectively spitting in your face as you help them.

More like

Fenris: This is stupid. But you've helped me with plenty of my own personal issues and I trust you even if I question the wisdom of your actions .

Merrill: You are the only thing I really have left. I don't know these mages from Adam so I'll side with you.

Anders: I'm losing control of myself and Justice just blew up the Chantry and I don't want this war to happen so I'll side with you.

Hawke's justification for siding with the Templars (at least what he/she says it is to Merill) is that they need to minimize the damage to Kirkwall, that's not an unreasonable motive to be convinced by.

Ryzaki,

That's how it plays out when you do their friendship or rivalry. I was attempting to highlight why it would be silly to expect them to side with you if you hadn't. I should have used the sarcasm tag. >_>

When I got that it went like this:
Fenris: [KO's Hawke]
Merrill: "Ma Vhenahn, hold on!"
[Merrill runs up to Fenris, beats him to death with her staff before I have her throw a Mythal's Grace]

I found it heartwarming.

That sounds hilarious.
