Hey guys,
recently I got the 4-in-1 pack from the local game store and I'm fairly excited to try out this 'legendary' game after more than a decade the first game was released.

However, I'm not too sure how to go about patching the games, installing it optimally and there's all this talk about these third-party programs that can enhance your experience (such as a widescreen capability one I think?).

So I'm not too sure as to what I need to do completely, can you give me step-by-step instructions to help me install/play the games!?

I have installed all 4 games and installed all of them on FULL or everything on CUSTOM. I don't know why, but I felt as if if I chose the recommended one or minimum option I'd be missing out on a few things. Also, whenever I try to start BG1/TotSC it says 'This version is only compatible with US and CANADA' or something (I live in Australia btw).

That's first, and then I'd like to be able to install some of the mods/programs that enhance the games (most especially the widescreen one). Most of the time I'm playing on the laptop (1366x768, fairly new and has good specs so dw about that.) or sometimes if I'm feeling a bit spontaneous I'll hook my laptop up to a 1920x1080 monitor. EDIT: Oh, and I have Windows 7 32-bit operating system. (says it's 64-bit capable but bleh, I dunno)

ALL HELP is appreciated guys.
Thank you

Custom install is the best choice. On Windows 7 it's better to install to something like c:\\games than the default directory as Windows starts cloning files that the program tries to update. while not strictly essential it does make it easier to locate save games, check the ini files etc.

For BG/TotSC you need the TotSC patch, available at http://www.sorcerers.../index_misc.php - no need for the other patch or the directx patch either. This will resolve the "US/Canada" issue.

The widescreen mod works on TotSC, from http://www.gibberlin...net/widescreen/ and should be a simple install after the patch is applied.

I would say play it with the widescreen mod and close to vanilla first time through. Most other mods aren't designed for TotSC, you'd need to install EasyTutu or BGT to use them.

Thank you very much for the help! So you only recommend the widescreen mod? and how about for BG2/ToB? Will that apply to it is as well? and er I'm not exactly sure what you mean about 'close to vanilla first time through' Dx

If you want more than the widescreen mod you'll need EasyTutu or BGT. They both subtly change the gameplay compared to the standard/vanilla game as they use the BG2 game engine. From memory this is a representation;

Negatives of the BG2 engine
- Reduced number of summons per casting, usually only 1-2 instead of 6.
- Restriction on total number of summons. 5 instead of unlimited.

Positives of the BG2 game engine
+ Faster walking speed. It can take what feels like hours to explore each map in BG.
+ TAB key can be used to highlight doors, chests, containers, hidden compartments etc.
+ Increased stacking limits. 40 missiles per slot instead of 20.
+ A few more inventory slots (2 I think but could be 4).
+ Able to dual-wield, e.g. 2 long swords.
+ Kits (specialisations) for each class.
+ New classes (monk, barbarian, wild mage, sorcerer).
+ Able to access the inventory while paused in the single player game. A huge help.

Other differences
? Different resistances etc so a certain weapon/attack may work in one engine but not the other. Limited to 3-4 enemies.

The mods I'd add for EasyTutu or BGT would be the BG1 NPC mod & BG1 Unfinished Business.

For BG2/TOB I'd probably only suggest widescreen & Unfinished Business for a first run. Maybe a fixpack and a convenience/tweaks mod to increase stacking and reduce inventory issues.

If you really want to go for it, there is a Big World Project mod. It takes patched installs of BG & BG2, allows you to back them up and then lists a lot of mods so you can select what you want. It then downloads & installs them in the correct order etc. It also allows you to rollback so you can change the mods you want and re-install. I've used it a couple of times, just trying it again now actually. Link at http://www.shsforums...roject-bwp-v57/
