Sten says that he came to Ferelden seeking the answer to the question of  "What is the Blight" on behalf of the Arishok.

Par Vollen is at the very opposite end of the known world. How exaclty could the Qunari known that one was going on in Ferelden, especially since the very inhabitants of Ferelden, didn't even know it was a Blight unitl the darkspawn had advanced through half the country. And since the last Blight was 2 centuries before the Qunari even came to Thedas, I have to wonder why he was even curious about one. Have the Qunari been randomly sending out scouts across the world for the last 2 centuries hoping they'd run into a Blight?

They have qunari who trade with people you know they probably reported the blight then the arishok sent sten.
Or maybe they were in the area already for something else.

Given that the Qunari in Dragon Age 2 are there from the very start of Act 1 it could be reasoned the Arishok was already heading towards Orlais to pick up the relic and that Sten and his men were part of the soldiers on board the Arishok's ship.

Building off Costin - if the Arishok had actually arrived in Orlais to pick the relic up, it's possible he overheard Cailan's representatives requesting the Orlesian Grey Wardens come to Ferelden to stop the Blight. The bas could only explain what a 'Blight' was in terms of their false religion, so he sent a scout party out to determine what it truly was, and how the qunari should prepare to deal with it.

Then the relic was stolen and they had to ship out after it before the scouts returned. At the end of DAO, Sten has no knowledge of this, and returns to Seheron, thinking that by now the deal with the Orlesians is done and the Arishok has returned home.

I like this theory.

They could have heard rumors of a Blight from a Rivaini merchant who had been in Denerim. People in Denerim must have been talking about the Darkspawn incursion, even if they didn't know it was a true blight. Rivain, which is no further away than Tevinter and Antiva, and we meet people from both Tevinter and Antiva in Denerim.

I'm guessing that they have ways of knowing. Flemeth said she could feel it or whatever so whats to say the Arishok couldn't tell?
