Hi there, I've been considering purchasing from the bioware store now for a long time, but before I do I wanted to ask if anyone knows if there are any issues with customs fees?  I'm not sure how it works, but I know you can be charged again after shipping etc. can anyone clarify this? :\\ I'm just concerned that I'll be paying $70 and then being charged again when it gets here ._. but i have no idea how this all works tbh!

Also, I might be completely wrong, but didn't bioware advertise a sale when you spend over $60 this weekend? I can't seem to find anything about it now lol!  I found it, it was originally posted in 2010, doh! Got me all excited xD

I've never had to pay customs charges on anything that I've received from Bioware. The packages go through HDNL when it gets to the UK.

Aah brilliant :) thanks for the help! I was just worried after hearing about someone ordering something from the states and having to pay a whopping customs fee for it >.<

Thanks again! :)

In theory you pay VAT on anything above the threshold (£32? Some fairly low figure, anyway) but in practice it's rare that they bother... until you get to the next threshold of one-hundred-and-something pounds (meaning goods and shipping combined) when it becomes eligible for import duties, and they're much more interested in this stuff, unfortunately.

A lot of it depends on the courier, too. DHL are the worst, both the most pedantic as well as tending to incorrectly calculate the amount owed and being very quick to send letters threatening legal action. And if they overcharge you, they won't pay up unless you resort to threatening them likewise. Never use DHL if you have a choice.

UPS are less pedantic and more likely to correctly calculate the amount owed, though they have hefty admin fees. You can ask for these to be paid back; you may have to ask several times, but it's a legal grey area that they don't seem to want to test in court, so pestering them to refund their own customs handling fees (obviously you can't avoid paying duty and VAT though) should prove successful.

The same can be done with Royal Mail, though they're a pain to deal with as they're so appallingly slow and never answer the phone.

I don't think I recall ever being charged anything by HDNL, as BeanieBat says. On the other hand, most of the stuff they deliver tends to be broken in transit!
