ok so, not many people liked the static armour for your companions, but at the same time a fair amount of people see that its not the best to be able to completely change your companions armour (it takes away from the ablity to for instance have unique body shapes, because this would mean each mesh would have to be made again like maybe 4-5 times which takes up a lot of room, and then people would probably complain about the really high system requirment) this would also take away from having so many different mesh' in game (DAO had 6, one light one medium one heavy and 2 massive and one templar, where as DA2 has at least 6 per wight class)
So my question is, if there was a toolkit, or in a perfect world how would you mod the companions armour?

I'll start, :P
I would have it so each compnion had at least 3 unique armour mesh', so they would have there orignal (lets work with issabell for this) so that would be her set rogue armour, but you could also equipt different rogue armours on her, it would not change the model of her armour (otther then maybe the colour?) so all rogue armours look like her normal unique clothing. But, if you were to put robes on her, she would have a different armour mesh that was more robe like, maybe a long pirate style coat, (to keep in character she'd probably wear it open, with not much underneth, but something like that. and then with the plate armour, all plate armour would look, like i dont know, maybe 2 of her shoulder pads from after you romance her, a metal corset and armoured booots, (not the best design but you get the general idea)
I think this would keep the unique characters., but also gives you better customisation.

so yeh how would you do it?
please keep it nice, none of this 'Dragon age 2 is ****' or stuff like that please

I proposed something like this ages ago. The thing is, we can't specify armor appearance on a per-companion basis, only on a per-race/gender basis. A toolset might be able to change that, but that's the way it is for now. It's a wonderful idea, though, and one I suggested in my feedback e-mail.

If you're interested in the companions having variations of their unique armors, you might wan to look at my "Diversified Follower Armors" mod /shameless self-promotion

The one thing that I don;t like about all these companion armor changes and what not is that the y all become OOC. For example, in the OP, while his proposal sounds more in line with Isabela's character, it goes way off the end of the OOC scale when plate armor comes into the mix. A rogue/pirate will never ever in any genre, wear plate armor. This is just one example of the problems I have with a lot of the companion modding that is going on. Another example, giving Isabela the Archery tree. Really? Another OOC issue since she states very clearly she is a duelist, she "lives" for close quarters combat. I don't really care how people want to play their game, I just bugs me when well established characters get moved into the OOC category like nothing happened.

Leliana could wear plate in Origins. Alistair could wear leather. Anders could use bows. I suppose you didn't like
that? That's fine. But I did. Restrictions by class or character (except in exceptional circumstances) are artificial, and that's much more jarring to me (and many others) than something being out-of-character.

Isabela lives for mano a mano combat, sure. But Hawke told her to use a bow, because she needs ranged support. Boom. Problem solved.

Oh those are valid reasons for you, nothing wrong with them for you.
The examples you give are good examples, however, Origins is a much different game, whether people admit it or not. And even in Origins I could not do things like put Leli in plate armor, and I suspect that one of the factors that led BioWare to limit skill types and armor choices was the statistical data they collected from their users uploaded play data. I'd almost put money on that data pointing to a vast majority of players keeping companions equipped appropriate to their lore roles. Leliana was a bard, she is supposed to be a good jack of all rogue trades, so her using archery was IC. But for Isabela, who was a specialist even back in Origins, sticking a bow in her hands and saying shoot stuff, if she was IC, would likely result in handing the bow back (or throwing it at your feet) and telling you where you could go. She is your friend or a companion with a common goal or other ulterior motive, not an employee or servant.

My apologies to the OP, I didn't intent to derail the thread. I'll start another topic to discuss this.

yeh i suppose  that was my point in trying to keep the armour, even plate and heavy ect. in the same style, so it would still suit the character (of being quiet a light looking armour) but just heavier then her medium armour. So it would be lighter then anything hawke wore but more then what she does at the moment, (i think we could all agree that isabela could wear a bit more armour and still be kept in character

i dont see an issue with letting Izzy wear plate, as long as it had STR and CON requirements then you would have to gimp her as a rogue to do it...only an idiot would have a rogue in plate but they should still have the option

but i do like the idea of Izzy specific plate...not a full set but shoulder and glove plates and maybe reinforced corset and boots would fit

I did like putting Alistair in Warden Commander and then Cailan Plate in DAO...although on the flipside, I always kept Morrigan in her outfit, upgrading after the Flemeth fight
