I really don't understand the wangst over the Mission Complete screens. I mean, they weren't necessary, but I sort of like them--they reminded me of StarCraft. Hurr.

Of course, I don't mind being reminded that I'm playing a video game.

Well for the most part, people DONT want to be reminded that they're playing a videogame. Ever heard of the suspension of disbelief?

I do not know how many RPG games you have played in the past but the core thing about RPGs (and videogames in general) is that the defining factor IS how much you are immersed into a story and how a game can hold you into that state.

I go from my heart beating fast as I was caught up in the Mordin loyalty mission to only be taken to an irrelevant mission complete screen which really kills the mood.

If Bioware wanted to remind us about what we did in the mission, they should have implemented it into the gameplay better. An example would be to go talk to Miranda to recieve a mission recap/debrief. Then the mission complete screen should pop up and show you you past mission(s) details

I believe the Mission complete screens is a PERFECT way to break immersion and ruin the experience from that perspective.

HOW?!

You have to realize when people say Immersion breaking, they actually just mean "They don't like it" or it just doesn't tickle their nostalgia organ.

Just have Joker (or whoever your Chambers-type person is in ME3) say something like "Your mission debrief is available at your terminal, commander."

Off-topic: can we ditch the loading screens (or at least a majority of them) and bring back elevators? I liked listening to the news reports and/or squad chatter instead of staring at a gif of how the Normandys doors open.

No, it isn't a matter of ME2 vs ME1, but more so of a matter of what it is.....Immersion breaking, lets not ignore the facts.

As an RPG gamer, immersion is a key thing to have because you are sucked into the story/atmosphere and you are held there until you decide to turn of the videogame.

If this was 1993 when gaming wasn't seen as a true story-telling medium but just an enteractive toy, then it would have been okay. But times have changed and things have become more cinematic so a mission complete screen is irrelevant as there are better and more effective ways of debriefing the player on his/her most recent mission.

I am actually of the opinion that some of you are in dire need of something to remind you that real life exists.

YAY MISSION COMPLETE SCREEN!

Your astounding contributions to this discussion have been noted.

I just found them to be wholly unneeded. I can't think of a single instance where, upon reading the mission complete screen, I said "oh yeah, i forgot about that". Instead of throwing it in your face at the end of a mission they should have just made it an optional viewing afterwards when you're in the Normandy.

As far as immersion-breakers go the Mission Complete screens were well south of "Miranda/Thane wear space clothes into combat" on my list lol.

There's nothing to contribute to. You're just making a big deal out something insignificant and trying to sound high-brow about it.

I hope the MISSION COMPLETE does not return. It was horrible. Don't bring it back for ME3! Nothing worse than completing an epic mission only to have those words rape your eyes and tell you how much cash you got.

I don't want to turn this into a ME2 was a Shooter vs RPG thread but the undertones of this thread does imply that. This mission complete screen is probably something that isn't such a big of a deal for those who view ME2 as a shooter or from someone who has a strong shooter/FPS background. However for those hardcore RPG gamers and people who have played Bioware games prior to Jade Empire (KOTOR, NWN, and BG) would find the Mission complete screen annoying and something that kills the flow/immersion of the game.

It worries me that Bioware hasn't said anything about this just yet but I hope this issue has been dealt with and Bioware has found better ways to remind us of our past mission(s) and what we did/gained in them.

It wasn't just the "mission complete" screens that I found annoying- it was the loading screens too. It was somewhat intrusive, immersion breaking, and didn't really help curb the linear feel of ME2 since they cropped up during every single zone change.

Granted, the elevators and airlocks in ME1 could be dull (more party banter anyone?), but I'd take them over a loading screen any day.

One thing is very good about the mission complete screen though. You can look at it briefly and and tell right away if you got all the upgrades or not.

Correction: YOU don't want to be reminded that you're playing a videogame.  My post mereley said I was not in your camp--I don't mind doing stupid stuff for points, or seeing what points I've got, for the same reason that I enjoy boss fights, leveling up, and getting achievements: it's videogamey, and I dig that.  There's a certain charm in that sort of thing for me, you know?

I am not saying you are wrong or that your ideas are bad; it's just that the whole MISSION COMPLETE thing wasn't a game-breaker for me.  I won't pitch a fit if they go--it's not like I love them or anything and I'm not against less choppy storytelling--but my overall gaming experience was not hampered by them in any way.

You have a different opinion.  I respect that, but I don't have to agree with you.

Nitpick: Immersion and suspension of disbelief are two different things.  Yes, they play off each other, and both refer to integrating the game better into reality, but immersion largely deals with presentation of the story (game mechanics, cinematic presentation, etc), while suspension of disbelief deals more with the actual story being told ("ZOMG did she just kill a Reaper by poking its eye out?  That's dumb").

So you prefer elevators over loading screens even if they are both tedious and boring? What?!

Also there are loading screens in ME1 too.

One thing I appreciated the "Mission complete" screen from ME2 is that they gave a very small insight about how TIM precieved the events of what just happend.

I liked the Mission Complete screen, because I could see if I got everything in a mission. I'm a completionist like that.

Even though it gives some misinformation on occasion.

Everyone and their mother is an elitist.

It's an empty word at this point.
